New Dance couple - Stavitskaia / Shibnev

gmyers, give it a rest. s/k took on material that was just too difficult for them last season, this season they should fare better. Besides this thread is about Maria and Shibnev.

Step sequences, lifts, and twizzles? I hope not! No way not to include them.

They are worthy of being mentioned In a thread about new ice dancers as a warning to take tech seriously.

To be honest I am most curious about Y/M. They strike me potentially as a most interesting team to watch ;)

Maria has got the look and the twizzles down to be successful in ice dance. I'm excited to see how this team fares!

Maria responded to my inquiry on ask.fm yesterday:

We are planning an elopement. ;)

So that's where I was going wrong! I didn't need to spend 3 years getting to know a girl, become good friends with her, and do things for her. All I had to do was propose straight away! :drama:

Congratulations! :cheer: I'm sure you will be very happy together.

(Erm, I take it Maria does realise that you're double her age...)

Seriously, though. I really hope everything goes well for Maria with this new phase of her career. She deserves it!

Actually, that's pretty close to a fair statement there. Obviously proposing to strangers on the side of the street will probably mark you a crazy, but on the internet or online dating websites, a particularly witty delivery of a marriage proposal would almost always elicit a positive response in my experience, and off we'd go! (...To further banter and meeting up, not the altar! ;) )

I was never quite sure why that was always such an effective opening salvo...

Are they going to skate in juniors or seniors? I read two conflicting opinions.

No official word but my bet is juniors. A few months back Tatiana Mishina said they would start with juniors first.

Maria said in ask.fm that they would skate in seniors.

Well, I really liked watching her when she was a singles skater, but quite honestly, I don't think they have any chance to get through in Russian seniors. I know that the Russian seniors are not that strong, but she will be competing against pairs that won junior worlds. Most of the pairs who skate in seniors had pretty decent results in juniors. I don't think one can afford to skip five or ten years of specialising in dance and suddenly match their skills to those pairs who have concentrated on dance since they were perhaps ten years old. I am not saying that Stavitskaya was not skating at that time, but she would have spent considerable time practising her jumps and spins, while the dancers were working on edges and turns. I don't think one can make up ten years. But we will see. If they are doing it just for enjoyment, why not. But I can't see them making Russian team (probably not even after this coming season) and may end up on B competitions only.

Miracles can and do happen! I believe in you, Masha!

Less than an hour away from September 1st in Russia (and technically, Ukraine)...

Happy Birthday, Masha! :hb:
