Congratulations to Liza :).

Not to diminish the honor of being nominated, but in response to the last sentence in melissa's OP:

Meryl Davis won last year. (I seem to recall that she was the winner in the Team category, b/c CW and she were considered a Team.)
And IIRC, other skaters have won in the past. Other skaters in addition to MD definitely have been nominated in the past. (IIRC, information about past winners and nominees is readily accessible on the foundation website, for anyone who wants to look it up. :))​

I would imagine the award would go to Serena though - to hold all 4 Grand Slams at her age is even more remarkable than Liza's amazing comeback and record 4-triple SP.

Yes, I see that Michelle Kwan won in 1998, Sarah Hughes in 2002 and Yuna Kim in 2010, all after the Olympics

IMHO Liza is certainly worthy as are Simone Biles and Serena Williams--both of whom have won it in the past, I think. Either way congratulations to Liza for being nominated!
 
Despite her success the past year, I don't think Liza has elevated her sport in the same way Serena or Biles has. It's much, much harder to win three consecutive gymnastics all around titles or all four grand slam titles than it is one world championship.

Agreed. Liza's main story is her personal comeback. She hasn't quite pushed it yet the way Mao or Kim has, because artistically she has a lot to be desired, but I also think she has a lot more to offer too.

Williams however in winning Wimbledon (thus holding all 4 majors) is the oldest woman ever to win a Grand Slam tournament. While the other nominees are amazing in their own right, that is an unmatched feat. Surely it must be her to win this year, even if she's won it before.
 
No point voting.. this year belong to Serena otherwise there's some travesty! Liza is young and as long as she keeps on winning churning out better 3a than Mao in quantity and quality as well as consistency. And facing tougher competitions over time (it was the year where Rika Hongo won cup of Russia lol!) She will get her turn.

I would be very surprised if Tuktamysheva were able to do as many or more 3A than Mao. Mao in the 2010 Olympics alone executed more clean triple axels than Liza has in ISU international competitions so far. With a lot of her career behind her, Tukt has a way's to catch up to Mao who has been executing 3As since the beginning of her senior career (and junior too).

Heh I didn't say it is going to be easy. I should have added IF + 2015/16 season.
Actually if Mao come back and does a Liza winning everything and winning th WC. I'd say she deserve more of a nomination next year than Liza this year. WHILE Liza did fantastic this year it is only her 1st year of real success and she did it in a year with less competition than other years previous. Not to mention I had real problems with the 3T3T cop smart strategy and inflated pcs in general post Sochi.

That's the same excuse people say when it comes to election time, no point voting! *insert candidate* will win! We should vote to show that we care, figure skating is definitely not as big as tennis or gymnastics but we should show that we exist and we support our athletes, it only takes a second anyway, we should all show our support

I don't think that Serena Williams should automatically win; it should be based on a democratic process. But by the same token I don't think that just because a group of people really likes a particular sport they are obliged to vote for a particular person in that sport, unless they honestly feel that person should win. Everyone has their own preferences and qualities they like in skater and their own sense of what counts as a great accomplishment relative to the other nominees.

I think what Serena managed this year was an epic feat, yes.

However, she was AMPLY rewarded for it, has won many awards and millions and millions of dollars - the same money as the men, in fact, for less playing time. Wonder what the prize money for Liza's winning season totaled up to? I'd wager Serena could go out in the first round of a minor WTA tournament in a 6-0 6-0 half-an-hour loss and earn more money than Liza did last season.

Well it has to do more with the popularity of the sport itself, if Liza were a tennis player, I assume she would get huge attention as well.
 
Not to be a poo poo head but has anyone looked at Kelly Clark's list of achievements?

For a 32 yr old who won a Gold medal all the way back in the 2002 Olympics followed up by two bronzes in the 2010 and 2014 Olympics both its a pretty impressive feat to still be on top. Not that I don't think Liza had a great season but she's got some serious talent to go up against. Snowboarding isn't the most popular sport amongst women but these girls are serious and do some insane stuff. For instance the 1080 in snowboarding is like the 3a or even the quad for ladies in figure skating. She was the first to do it.
