I've heard Hanyu and Fernandez push each other to be better. Although Chan doesn't train with them, I hope they have all spurred each other to greater things. I'm glad he's back if his body hasn't fallen apart.
I'm lucky. I get to watch both Hanyu and Chan this year.

Are you talking about SP+FS? Or only the FS? Because I'm pretty sure he's not trying 3 quads in his free, but if you count the one he'll do in the SP you're all set. I think he'll definitely go for a total of 3 quads

I almost missed your post! This thread is moving so fast

Yep, I meant SP+FS as he only went for a quad in FS at JO.

I guess it's already been discussed enough here but it means that Chan will probably be a quad and a 3A behind Hanyu right? I wonder someone has already calculated the possible BV for each...

If we are talking about total FS BV's. If Chan will be back to his tech content from olympic season, his BV will be 82-83 as I remember. Hanyu BV this season is 95

just thought of something... in tennis for instance... or hockey... etc... we will often hear a player saying, well my opponent was great today and I am so happy to have won, got lucky a few times, (ball went over the net or in the net depending on the sport)...

but in figure skating, saying something else than I deserved the win would imply that the judges didn't do their job properly... no matter how clean a skater skates at a competition, if they end up on top of the podium, they cannot start saying things like "i was lucky, or i shouldn't have won"... it would open a huge can of worms... so i think the actual best comment is to say I am so happy I won, i worked hard, I deserved it ;)

no? just a thought.

Maybe it's a culture thing, I don't ever recall any of Chan's competitors being defensive about "whether I deserved the win or not", or making any remarks over it.

Yuzu after 2014WC, many people are also saying Machida who skated 2 clean programs deserved to win. But all Yuzu commented was how he was unhappy with the mistakes he made and would like to improve next time. Recently he was asked by a reporter "has he ever felt completely satisfied with his performance but end up not wining and if so when would that be", a very tricky question. He said something that he was never completely satisfied with a performance, even the short program from Sochi he felt there's room for improvement. And people prefer this kind of "humble" answers over Patrick's "arrogant" remarks on "I deserved the win".

cultural perhaps it is..

see… if someone comes to me, after a flawless olympic SP and tells me, well i wasn't at my best, i could do better… that can be made as arrogant ;) (ie "i am so much better than this... like realllly!! ") LOL

we can always turn the words of the people around and make a big mess with them… to me neither Patrick nor Yuzu are arrogant. They express themselves differently and the medias also approaches them differently.

Out of curiosity, did anyone make a huge mess when Machida didn't win? Did anyone said Yuzu did not deserve it? I am sure there are threads about it… but never as many comments that say Patrick this or that….

I think it's time to focus on the skating… there's Skate America right now ;) enjoy !

^^^ @4everchan, wow..just wow :disapp:

Yuzu's words "he was never completely satisfied with a performance, even the short program from Sochi he felt there's room for improvement" is not the same as saying "i wasn't at my best, i could do better". The Japanese are humble people, please do not twist their words.

In one of press conferences prior to the Olympic Yuzu stated that he sees Chan as an inspiration.

It's kind of interesting, actually. In North America there is (or was) more or less a tradition that we expected our athletes, first, to be the strong silent type, and second, if you just must say something, then say, "Aw shucks, t'wern't nothin'."

But when the great boxer Muhammad Ali came along shouting "I am the greatest!", the young people loved it as much as the old people hated it. Patrick ought to come out with a few rhymes. "Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee. Yuzuru Hanyu can't touch me!"

I also like Babe Ruth's (baseball player from the 1020s) comment when he got a big raise in salary after hitting 60 home runs. A reporter asked him, "How do you justify making more money the President of the United States?" Ruth answered, "I had a better year."

For some reason, certain individuals van get away with this and others can't.

The "heroic boast" is a set piece in epic literature. Beowulf, Achilles, Gilgamesh … their stories would not be complete if they hadn't waxed eloquent about all the fierce things they were going to do to their foes.

yup :)

i'd say, as a Canadian, our athletes used to be very "the important is to participate" .... then for 2010, the first games Patrick attended as a very young skater... there was a "we believe" song, and a "own the podium"funding agency... Canada was tired of being seen as the only country hosting the games without getting a gold at home games... and there was a strong wind of : let's deserve our wins... let's win... let's be proud of ourselves.... "

I think that growing up in the "own the podium" era may explain why Chan (or some fans like myself) find him simply honest about sport. There is a huge different saying : i deserved to win... i have a great program... i am confident in myself... i am world champion.... then saying you guys all suck... i don't think patrick has ever said the latter.... again, watching his recent interviews shows us a very kind patrick... an honest and even humble patrick...

i mean... i don't want to go on a tennis forum after Kyrgios's words towards Wawrinka... that's not correct... Patrick, very different story.

Quoting a response on tumblr to a statement of fans treatment of Chan compared to Yuzu which seemingly calling for hate on Yuzu...."If Hanyu would be treated like the devil right now that wouldn’t make anything about Chan’s situation and treatment better. More hate never helps against hate."

i agree with this... in my post, i precise that i think both are great people but express themselves differently.... i am not here to create hate... i have said it many times, i like not only chan and yuzu but denis, nam, misha and many others from the current field, and tons of great champions from the past like jeff, dice, kurt etc...

i think that fans get too monogamous with their love of a skater.... they only see their favorites and then give plenty of "hate" to the others... that's what bugs me... sport is all about having many good contenders... if there were only one good skater, it would be very boring... i value each of these guys and wish them the best... i felt like saying this because i don't think you read my post correctly... that actually may be cultural as well... and when that happens, it does create a lot more issues...

PS there was practically no comments about yuzu and medias here... many of the posts were triggered by a question: why do people dislike Patrick so much... he is such a great skater? (not quoting exactly but it's a few pages back from mrrice)

some people compared answers to media of both skaters... and of course they are different... ;) but it doesn't mean that one is right and the other is wrong ;)
