2015 Skate Canada Mens Free Skate

Hahaha let's get real. AS long as there are uber Hanyu fans there will never be a Swoonfest for Chan. The hatred towards Chan is really shocking if not a bit concerning.

Maybe I'm seeing things through rose colored glasses but many of Yuzuru's fans (that I know of) are saying Patrick did great today, me included. That's not to note what others are saying about Yuzuru though, like he should quit being a competitive skater and disappear.

Wow Chan manages to fluke a 3A and gets showered with 2's and 3's. Sad and amazing.
LOL what are you people even talking about anymore? "fluke a 3A"? What does that even MEAN? He NAILED his 3a, deal with it.

These posts trying to knock him down are just getting more and more pathetic.

Just to be clear, although I agree with Patrick's win, I think Yuzu's program is marvelous also. The theme and choreography is very innovative and creative. Plus difficult to execute. Usually we see Asian women doing the "Asian women" programs like Miss Saigon, Madame Butterfly, etc...and it's really great to see a Japanese man doing a heavily Japanese-culture influenced program. Very refreshing, especially since he did POTO last year.
Do you think Western audiences will enjoy skating programs using Asian theme? I have the feelings Westerners say they like Asian ladies skating to Asian style only because it's the stereotypes they have (like: "oh they're Japanese they're wearing Kimono like costume, they look interesting" and that's it), not because they actually enjoy the choreography and transitions integrated in those programs. As for Asian men trying out Asian music, I remember Chinese men did the same before and they got not much love.

Miss Saigon and Madame Butterly are both Westernized Japanese though. Seimei is ACTUALLY Japanese, which is one of the reasons why I am thrilled about it.

Hanyu is still the fave; he has the tes and Chan can't compete; not even close tes. But PC wise I think this was a fair decision. I apologize I didn't get Hanyu's performance or rather I thought it needed more attack and I thought Hanyu has magnificent entries into the 3A's bu his entries into the first two quads not so nice - something about the way Chan strokes even looks majestic and mazing blade control. Wow But I do believe Hanyu will get it together and the program will be more livelier. I actually think Hanyu has lot more to be happy about - Chan needs to orry about getting another triple axel well landing the 3 consistently and learning the slcow or flip (quad)

If high GOEs are not given for an extremely well fluked jump, then it will be sad and unfair. Negative reputation judging?

It should always be about what is done on the ice at the competition. Ask D10.

Yuzu has a lot of non-Japanese fans who love this program! I guess I can't speak for casual viewers though. But the Canadian audience seemed to really enjoy his program (the fall on the last jump might've killed some of the excitement though.) Overall, the music sounds epic, and that reflects well on people who know nothing about the music. I think people complaining about the program are just being haters.

WOW I am a chan fan... and a yuzu fan... and a Nam fan... and i guess just a figure skating fan... :) I am shocked to see that people would say that YUZU should quite skating after the fact that for the first time he landed 3 quads in his FP... people are crazy

I love seeing any skater use their culture/heritage as a focal point for a program. I think those performances are usually more passionate since they're very dear to the skater

eta: Also, I usually end up learning something, like I have with Yuzuru's Seimei program this year.

Chan was just a virtuoso today. He beat Hanyu significantly on components in the LP where Hanyu fell (and was visibly drained), but Hanyu beat Chan slightly on the components in the SP when Chan fell. I think this shows judging of falls impacting the PCS, which I hope will continue through the season.

Hanyu obviously became quite ragged and it was through sheer will that he finished the end of the program. But, this is how he pushes himself as an athlete, and this is the type of champion he is. I remember Elvis Stojko's interview with TSL and how he talked about how adding up the 4Ts and the 4Ss and the 3As increased the expenditure of energy so that "they're not even in the same frickin' planet". Hanyu could absolutely be a pristine and clean skater with gorgeous lines all the time if he only did 1 quad and 1 triple axel in the first half, or 1 quad and 2 triple axels (particularly given his general stamina issues/asthma/susceptibility to injuries) because he is a quality skater (as much as some people fervently deny it), but that's just not how he does things.

On the other hand, Chan says he's not looking to be the champion, he's searching for answers for himself, and that's different but no less valid. His motivations are his own, and if he wishes to be back in the competitive arena with 'lesser' content, it's not because he's not also a worthy champion who wishes to push his skating in other ways. Glad to have him back and give a champion's performance in front of a home crowd.

They both moved me, but in different ways. With Chan, I saw a master at his craft, it was amazement over his sheer quality, moving me intellectually and "aesthetically", if that makes sense. With Hanyu, I saw an athlete trying to push himself to his limits, never feeling content to stay in one place if he can reach farther, even if he should fail, moving me emotionally on a more human basis, even if I was aware in the difference of quality. It is kind of faint shades of Kim vs Asada circa Vancouver, haha. Anyway, I like both these programs, I like both these skaters, I enjoy Hanyu choosing a unique piece of music, and I enjoy Chan giving a masterclass on pure, powerful skating. Throw in Fernandez to give a little light-hearted charm and technical firepower, Ten when he's less injured, the amazing upstart in Uno, all the uniquely talented American and Russian men, and we have the makings for a great men's competition this season.

Yuzu is a prodigy and is very special. He is a once in a generation - maybe two generations - skater.

LOL... goes to the rink to try to fluke a 3A myself ... that is hilarious

Please don't generalize all fans plus hate for Patrick doesn't come exclusively from Yuzuru's fans, thank you.

Last and only time a Japanese man landed 3 quads in one program was Takeshi Honda...just think of that! It's been a long wait.

Of course I sit through that torrid mess of an SP yesterday without missing anything and then today when I have to go out and miss nine of the twelve skaters it turns out to be a really great LP. :palmf:

Time to fire up the videos and watch it all!

And it's tiring and baseless saying he isn't as "good" as Patrick when it comes to quality or skating skills. He's only 20. What Patrick skating this good when he was 20? Not really (and certainly not technically).

well, there aren't many men who have done so.... all nations ... i can think of Kevin... did Javier do it? maybe Tim Goebel? who has this info and is willing to share it?
