In human achievements, beliefs come first. That's why improvements, in sports, designs, etc. come incrementally, because a belief barrier needs to be broken every step of the way. In sports it takes years for human to increase the speed, height, and strength to today's standard just as most new technological inventions are clumsy in design at first and then evolve into sleek efficient designs. That's why role models are important, especially someone relatable, as they instill beliefs of what can be done even if previously considered unachievable.

Chan showed it's possible to do complex choreography with quads. His achievements have raised both the standard and beliefs of what can be accomplished in figure skating. He has inspired many who now acquire high technical abilities at ever younger age as a matter of fact without an earlier belief barrier.
Chan, in turn, gets pushed forward. It is a natural progress. As he's still at his prime physically, he sets new goals for himself and keeps moving the goal posts himself.

Hanyu, too, has his idols and is in turn an inspiring model to future greats. He was influenced and inspired by Chan as well and the two are close enough in age to compete against each other. This is great for the sport and the fans. In time, Hanyu will be pushed by some new prodigy.

all i seem to remember is Kevin doing 5 quads in one competition... and also being the first one to do 2 in the short... missing him a lot... but it does make sense that kovtun and Jin would... and also fernandez.... someone is supposed to come up with the info. i wonder why they aren't because usually we get so many stats from GS members

Well it's 1AM for me, under a more decent time zone I would have looked it up but my brain's barely functional atm but almighty wikipedia says Kevin landed 3 quads in his FS and 2 in the SP for a grand total of 5. The 3 quad guys is a small club, indeed.

I have always disagreed with the sentiment that the only reason people don't like certain programs is because they don't "understand" them. It's demeaning.

I didn't like Juke from Jason. Even though I love Jason, I hated Juke. It wasn't because I didn't "understand" the music/theme/whatever, it's because I plain didn't like it. I didn't like how flat and one-note the music was, I didn't like parts of the choreography, and I didn't like what they did to the costume. Saying that I just didn't understand it is insulting and arrogant.

I haven't seen Yuzuru's Seimei yet (working my way through the men's event) but if I don't like it, it won't be because I don't "understand" it. Equally, if I do like it, it won't be because I do "understand" it.

Or, to look at it another way, I understand Jorik Hendrickx's Titanic program, but I definitely don't like it!

I wouldn't be surprised if someone had already brought it up - but what is up with patrick chan's pants? that detail on the backand the sidestripes....VERY distracting (in a bad way) ...beautiful skate. a little disjointedly choreographed - felt like a check off list - unlike previous programs.

You don't get the point. You have all the rights to say "I don't like Hanyu's free skate because it's not my taste." But when you say "I dislike Hanyu's free skate because there is no choreography and it's empty" then it's a lie and totally biased. There are transitions and detailed choreography in it, you don't like it doesn't mean it's not there. That's the issue I have with some posters here throwing trash at Yuzuru's free skate.

i actually must be a die-hard fan as i loved his outfits even the SP one but i do agree that he used to have better costumes

I hope he gets Tu Ly to design for him again. He had the best costumes when he had the contract with Tuly up till Sochi. Now he looks like he shops off the rack.

Wow! What a competition. A lot of skaters delivered the goods for this earlier in the season. I agree with the top 3 on the podium and it'll be exciting to see how the rest of the season goes for them.

On the American side of things, it was awesome to see Tim Dolensky deliver the goods in what is probably his best skate ever, especially after he bombed the SP. He went from not hitting any of his jumps in the SP and not even managing to get a combo in, to hitting 8 triples in the LP. Hopefully this will be a bridge for him to move up from the "top 12-14" American skaters level he's been at the last couple of years into the GP-tier of American skaters. Am I the only one that's not convinced Adam should have beaten him in the LP?

Patrick was just superb! His skating was to die for, and his struggles since 2014 seems to have added layers of depth to him as a performer. 10 PCS totally deserved! Chopin's Etudes is fabulous for Patrick. Can't wait for Patrick vs. Shoma in China.

Sorry Yuzuru. Your PCS has been hugely over-scored. The judge who gave you 7s is brave but correct. Look at the angle of your body to the ice. You are stood vertically all the time. The let's-use-obscure-Japanese piece to appear artistic is easy and shallow just like your edges :big grin: I admire your work ethic and mental toughness, but credit shouldn't be given when undeserved.

Right. As you probably all know, Eurosport did not show any LIVE coverage of the Men's FS, because it was on in the wee small hours of the morning.

Fortunately, there are due to be 1h 30m of coverage on Eurosport 2 at 09:00 GMT (10:00 CET), i.e. 30 mintues from now.

HOWEVER, there is NO SKATING AT ALL being shown on either British Eurosport channel today.

So, for viewers in the UK and Ireland, if you are subscribed to Eurosport Player, open up a VPN, and go to the Dutch version of the Eurosport Player site, http://www.eurosportplayer.nl/

Don't worry. Although everything is written in Dutch, the procedure is EXACTLY the same as in the English version.

After you sign in, open up Eurosport 2 (it is currently showing snooker). Click on the settings button on the video. On the British version, the only thing you can change is the picture quality. But on the other versions, there is also the option to change the language. On the Dutch version, the options are Dutch (NL) and English (EN). Just click on the EN button, and it will change soundtrack straight away.

And you are ready to go in the company of Chris and Nicky!

(Oh, and don't worry about the snooker. They are flying through the session! And even if they do over-run, it is the programme on after it that is liable to be cut down, as it is a very short highlights programme of something that was previously shown LIVE)

I think you're right. And at least for this season, it will probably be the only one, unless something like Boyang winning COC and Maxim TEB to meet at NHK, happens.

Great point! Having 4/6 of the current GP Men's medalists at TEB is going to be incredible to watch
