Yulia Lipnitskaya

Well, well... Interesting move.
Eteri has a huge group and most probably Yulia needed a different approach.
Last year I was standing for them as team. This year something was different...Different needs not fulfilled? They know better.
No mother fault for sure as I read some posts before: Eteri always said Y's mom was discreet and not interfering.
And Eteri did her job with her: and don't forget that they grew up together up to the Olympic epic moment.
Things just change.
A fresh start with Urmanov, gold in OG 1994 under Mishin guidance, could be interesting. Let's see how things evolve.

I'm among those fans who were shocked to read this news. Of course, she knows best, and I'll always be rooting for her, and it'll be interesting to see how her skating career develops under Urmanov. I thought Gosviani had beautiful programs and costumes, and was very graceful, so Urmanov does have some experience of working with a skater whose style is somewhat similar to Yulia's, although seems interested in diversifying her skating style. Personalities-wise it's hard for me to say how it'll work out, since I don't really know that much about him as a person and probably not enough about Yulia either. Still, I think that if he gives her creative freedom and helps make her jumps more consistent, they'll get along. And, yes, of course, him having as much time as she might want for her is a huge plus for any top skater. Besides, he'll be fully focused on her and make her success his uncontested number one priority. That's, of course, good for any skater.

I was shocked at the very first moment, too (though I had half-expected that it could happen, to be honest) - but very soon I began to feel positive about that... I agree: a change, plenty of ice and plenty of time that the new coach can devote to her - all this, I hope, can do good for Yulia.

I think Urmanov is a good choice for Yulia, because of the fact that she is his top student now and he will ultimately spend most of the time with her. He can prove himself. I think she needs that attention and he should be a very good technical coach, that's also exactly what she needs at this point in time, because getting those jumps consistent again is crucial. And I think she is a talented jumper, it's just her technique that's causing the problems.

Thanks for the articles from Eteri and Urmanov!

It does sound like the split is amicable and each side has understanding of which/what path needs to be taken and why there needs to be a change. It's good.
I hope that Urmanov will be able to understand and help Julia and vice versa and I hope that their collaboration will progress smoothly, little by little. And of course, that Julia will be able to adapt to the new environment well and continue improving. :agree:

Well, I have no idea if Urmanov is the best choice. I don't know him very well as a coach but I'm glad she moved.

I was afraid that Yulia might quit if the 2015-16 season disappointed her again. Changing coach tells me that she is looking for a new start. I am happy for her.

Thanks for the articles from Eteri and Urmanov! ...
Many thanks from here too.

I'm surprised, though, that the Rus Fed publicly announced Yulia's change of coach mid-season. I thought the transfer window was in May.

No you can change coaches whenever you want. Maybe it's not ideal, it is better to do this before the season starts but still, I think this is a good timing. She isn't going to the GPF so she has time to prepare for the RN and in anycase it's very good in order to prepare for the next season.

I'm not entirely surprised about a coaching change, though the timing does seem strange (I would've expected it in the middle of last season, or during the summer).

It does seem like Urmanov will be able to devote more time to Yulia, which is good. As Yulia's fan--and as someone who did like Urmanov as a skater--I hope everything turns out well for them both. Yulia back in form + Urmanov establishing himself as a coach. :cheer:

I think he's quite established as a coach already...he's not Orser or Mishin, but he's had several good skaters over the years. Kind of weird to keep seeing comments like this (didn't mean to single yours out...there have been many).

Sorry then. I just meant that he hasn't yet had a student at the top level internationally (where Yulia was in 2013-14). I didn't mean that he's scrambling for work or that no one even remembers he coaches.

I'll say no more on the matter in the future.

eteri doesn't show up to competition, yulia does her best in a long time...

just sayin:)

Good to see yulia was on the same page as me:) I thought I saw a twinkle in her eye when the scores came in after the short. I think she just needed Eteri gone to relieve the pressure. Not to diss Eteri, sometimes a funk just develops between teacher & pupil, especially when the pupil is growing so fast. My guess is that Yulia will be back with a vengeance we haven't seen from her.

(Now it comes out that Yulia wanted out from Eteri 10 months ago. Wasn't this way back when yulia unfriended eteri on vk or something and we had a leak which said they're splitting? Every time we get a leak regarding yulia it turns out to be true. first we heard that she was excessively solitary (which seems fixed now?), then we heard she had a sort of mental breakdown & may never compete at her level again, then we heard she wanted to leave eteri. every leak was met by fans with attacks of "gossip". Ilya spoke his mind without filter and see how he gets treated by yulias fans. I'll never understand why fans & people in general automatically believe everything they hear from people they like & automatically disregard everything they hear from people they don't like. We see this same tendency in politics & it causes terrible atrocities. I care deeply for yulia, she's my favorite, and i love gushing about her but i don't drink her kool-aid, and she serves it up often. I knew something was up when eteri was unfriended. .../rant.)

Somehow I missed the unfriending, that's really important, thanks. adelia posted that top officials "mediated between Eteri and Yulia" in that January meeting, the interview said they put "tremendous effort" to keep things as they were. So they didn't listen to Yulia, and it has cost her a lost year, a year of anxiety and lost opportunity. A previous interview mentioned that her performances suggested a cry for help. I dismissed that as psychobabble, but now it fits. You are right, at TEB-sans-Eteri she looked as if a great weight had been lifted from her shoulders. https://instagram.com/p/-CXvCyELTM/?taken-by=sunnylipnitskaya The way Urmanov handled the press, among other things from that interview, suggests that he will be very good for her. Plus she'll be out of the city and close to nature. I agree there is potential to come back with a vengeance. Thanks

from wikipedia: Urmanov is currently a skating coach and an International Skating Union technical specialist. His former students include Sergei Voronov, Nodari Maisuradze, Zhan Bush, Gordei Gorshkov, Nikol Gosviani, Polina Agafonova, and Anastasia Gubanova.[5] Urmanov currently coaches Yulia Lipnitskaya[6] and Deniss Vasiljevs.[7] He was based in Saint Petersburg, Russia until 2014, when moved to Sochi, Russia to coach at the Iceberg Skating Palace.[8] but sometimes holds summer camps or clinics in other locations such as Luleå, Sweden and Paris, France.[9]

LOL as if that was some kind of "secret". The whole world knew and she herself spoke about it a lot. The difference is that some people, like you, think that must be something bad which needs to be "fixed". Totally ignoring the fact that it is part of the character of a person. A period in their life maybe, their background story and circumstances in their life. What you call "fixed" is simply a person growing up, naturally.

then we heard she had a sort of mental breakdown & may never compete at her level again, then we heard she wanted to leave eteri. every leak was met by fans with attacks of "gossip".

In this topic the majority of her fans have been insisting that the main issue for her was mental. She and Eteri said many times that she is having these issues after Sochi. She gave a long interview about it, after CoC last season. How exactly was that a "leak", which was "met by fans with attacks of gossip", according to you?

Ilya spoke his mind without filter and see how he gets treated by yulias fans.

By attacking her and acting like a child? He the big man. Please, spare me Ilia's comments and his bigger than life ego.

I'll never understand why fans & people in general automatically believe everything they hear from people they like & automatically disregard everything they hear from people they don't like.

Why do I have to believe anything that comes out from people who have their own agenda because their ego got hurt, and not the first person involved. In this case Yulia? I'm not blind, or stupid, but I'm also her fan and this her a fan-fest. Why do I need to attack her, or even criticise, just because Ilia Averbukh thinks he's right?

We see this same tendency in politics & it causes terrible atrocities.

Oh dear me.:drama: The politics and the terrible atrocities even?!:slink:

Oh good for you. So smart and intelligent. Where would we be without you showing us the right path? Out of curiosity, what kool-aid did she ever served? :scratch3:
Yeah, it's really good to see Yulia was on the same page as you.

LOL at this kerfuffle...If people took every single Yulia rumor as truth (particularly during late last year and early this year).....she would've skated for all of Canada, Kazakstan, Mongolia & <insert random country> by now. :rofl2: Oh the scandal...the DRAMAZ!

Anyhoo...here's a pic of Yulia out and about with a friend. Can't wait to see what she and Mr Urmanov will have in store! *excited dance* :hap10:

I am excited about this change for Yulia. I was a big fan of Urmanov both when he was an amateur and when he turned pro, and think his blend of artistry and jumping technique will complement Yulia's own style and technique. They are both very unique and often under-appreciated skaters. I think they both have something to prove, so I think they will make a strong team. I am happy she made this change, and I wish them the best!

I don't know how I feel about this. Urmanov has never had a successful student. Yulia will be his first World medalist. If Alexei brings out a better mental approach to training that may work. Still I think Yulia needs a sports psychologist.
