Oh, boy I really love the way he says this. Although I'm angry with him for not being able to speak English better than this. The limited time of practice in Canada and the difference between Japanese and English and ... all are excuses. As a person who teaches people at his age at university, it is not acceptable for me  He's been simply lazy. He should have learnt English systematically. But, then we wouldn't see and hear this cute sentence from him. So maybe I need to forgive him. what a dilemma!

Since we're on this, I'm going to quote someone quoting Yuzuru: I want to study english but I don't want to study english!
Who quoted him?

Yes, he should have. However, people learn languages at different rates and some find learning languages harder than others especially if it was a language not used in the person's main environment. I think in terms of grammar and vocabulary Yuzuru may have it all pinned down in his head. But articulating them is another matter. Sometimes confidence is also a major factor. I've seen many cases of this and I don't think it is fair to just simply say that he's been lazy.

Well, compared to you guys I'm an old lady and expect a lot from my students. So, maybe you can let me be a bit strict here and not be upset by my comment (Onegai :thank:).

I am a teacher too, but I teach children. You are too severe. I forgive him because he works very hard to enjoy us with his skating. The day has only 24 hours. :)

Yeah, I know I'm so strict but I guess I'm fair at the same time. At least, this is what my students say. But, please don't get upset by my comment. I didn't mean it in a bad way, believe me.

I have done some teaching, but I also learned some linguistics so I'm not surprised to see him struggling with the language. When a person above the age of twelve tries to acquire a new language, it will be a constant struggle. Different Broca's areas will probably develop for that one particular language. I'm not saying it is impossible to learn a new language entirely but for some it may be hard. And as a speaker of English as a second language and a learner of another foreign language, I empathise with Yuzuru.

P.s. I'm not upset at all by your comment, though. :)

I think his English has come a long way and I doubt he's being lazy about it, the fact that he attempted to speak at the press conference in English, to me, was his way of practicing it (was this the first time he tried to do it in English?). I have no idea what type of English classes he might be taking and how frequently but to say his English proficiency level is unacceptable is a bit much, especially considering the topics/words that come up at press conferences probably isn't the type of thing you learn from typical language classes. In Japanese Yuzu usually talks a lot, I always feel it must be very difficult for him not being able to express himself to the full extent that he can in Japanese. For me, watching him speak with Brian so animatedly in English during this last Skate Canada it was really noticeable that he is a bit more comfortable with the language now, even if he gets hung up on certain words/ideas sometimes.

I think his English would've improved a lot more if he actually studies at a university where English is the primary language of instruction. He still studies his university courses in Japanese even though he trains in Canada, so he doesn't get to practice English as much as other international students.

Oh God, I don't want to make anyone upset here. But, as a person who is subjected to many questions after any presentation in different conferences around the world and as a person whom English is her third language, I tend to think about the questions that I may encounter and look up the words that I may need in my responses and I don't know them properly. So, to me "the topics/words that come up at press conferences probably isn't the type of thing you learn from typical language classes" is just an unacceptable excuse. Anyways, at the end the language he speaks with doesn't really matter since he speaks with us through his performance and his skating. He is a professional in that and this is why we love him so much.

I agree. His performances transcend language and I think that is why so many people love him so. :agree2:

Yeah, and I shouldn't have emphasized on his language ability since as I said he has his own unique language, but again I didn't mean it in a bad way. So, back to quote game, who and when?

"Yuzu is yuzu, and everybody here knows Yuzu. He is pretty much unbeatable, like nobody can beat him."

I don't know the answer for this one :scard7:

I ran away ashamed that I had never come across this quote. Trying to rectify the situation by finding the answer :D
would it make you feel better to know that I cannot recall most of those quotes?! the capacities of my auntie-brain are really limited

A tiny bit :) But I guess there are too many Yuzu and Yuzu-related quotes out there to remember for anyone to remember. Usually, I would remember snippets of a quote but I've never come across this one. I think I'm a bit certain now that the quote submitted by Farnaz is from a video somewhere.

Good approach :agree:

Okay. I've been going through the quote for a while now and while I still can't find the answer I'm just going to give it a go. This is a stab in the dark but I think it might be Javi.
