I loved the way they described the program as stillness vs. motion. I know some people have complained that his program doesn't have much in between transitions and seems empty (but he has dozens of transitions going directly in and out of his elements), but I think it works extremely well for the theme he chose. I personally think the program would have looked too busy with too many in between transitions and would have taken away from the message he is trying to convey. Kurt said it best when he described the crossrolls as doing nothing but everything at the same time.

:agree:

In relation to this, they mentioned about "ma" in the video. This concept is difficult to explain, but it's some kind of empty/void space in terms of area as well as time. I remember Mansai Nomura talked about it, and Yuzuru said the balance was important. Because of "ma", the intended point can be more impressive.

"Katari-tei" was so fun. I never imagined "run-through" is such a tough practice.

EDIT: I rewatched the video, and thought they implied the timing between elements, steps, etc. with "ma".

@1:21min, the character said "If only I woke-up one morning, and I were Hanyu-kun."- translated by Ayako Nakamura @YHIFG FB

Today, NHK broadcast a five minutes anime "Pieces of memory (想いのかけら)" and Yuzu is invited to comment after watching it. He also sends encouraged messages respectively to young skaters and to people nationwide.

This anime is telling a story about a 13 years old girl skater who lost her mother in 311 earthquake and now lives with her father, a fisher. She practiced skating before earthquake but seemed not in good shape. She felt frustrated when looking the ambitious slogan on the wall: Be a champion!

After earthquake, the girl received a fresh new photo via "Picture Restoration Project" who fix the damaged photos for earthquake survivors since 2011. She recalled the day when her mother dress her a magic ribbon on hair. What a happy moment! She got the courage to take more efforts in practice. In the finale, the girl step on ice for competition with a same ribbon her mother dressed her.

Yuzu said this is an anime which made him thinking much. He watched the video many times and recall many things every time...

In the video, Yuzu is impressed with the ribbon parts: the girl received it from her mother before earthquake and in the end, she dress the same ribbon on ice, just like her mother watching her skating from heaven.

"Picture Restoration Project" is an activity that is very warm heart and collaboration worldwide. Recommend to read this article for more information - In Japan, Restoring Photos For Tsunami Victims

Beautiful project, really heartwarming. I'm glad he could participate.

Thank you for explaining the concept of "ma" to us nonJapanese. I was intrigued enough to look it up in the internet and found this (https://m.youtube.com/watch?autoplay=1&v=VI0xgxCOf8E). I thought at first the concept only applies to performance but learned from the video it can apply also to other things such as conversations. Truly my being a fan of Yuzuru has also led me to know more about his people's culture.

Now if Yuzuru will apply "ma" when it comes to his loquaciousness... ;)

Re run-throughs, yes they can be very demanding especially with the jump content of Yuzuru's programs. I recall Brian saying that he wanted to tear his hair out at Yuzuru's first run-throughs of the latter's revamped (and amped up) Ballade when Yuzuru was even missing all three jumps. He also said they had butted heads over some things in training that were later finally resolved. I am aware that Yuzuru in the past resisted off ice strength training, fearing it would add bulk to his frame and make spinning in the air less easy. I suspect he finally accepted the necessity for such, and as we have seen, his jumps are none the worse for it.

Thank you for the link and translation.

I think in giving hope and inspiration to his fellow earthquake survivors, Yuzuru is indeed Lord of Sendai.

I wasn't surprised his keen eye and analytical mind picked up the significance of the ribbon in the anime. Brian did describe him as an "owl." :)

I'm surprised he didn't do off ice prior to Brian! Where did he or Brian talk about this? :O

Me too! First I was like...:palmf: then  then it inspired me to draw a picture and everything. Now I actually almost like it.

when I see pictures of it I'm like :hopelessness: but when I watch the program I think it's really beautiful, it's great in motion.

Yuzuru was quoted he didn't do off ice training in Sendai because he had limited time for training because of school and also because of his asthma. (http://www.goldenskate.com/2011/04/shooting-for-the-top/). I don't know whether that is usual for Japanese skaters because I also read his contemporary Kanako started off ice training only last season (http://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/ind...-figure-skating-news-after-sochi.91545/page-8).

I think he and Brian discussed off ice training when Yuzuru came to Canada to train under the latter. It appears initially Yuzuru's off ice training was ballet (http://www.absoluteskating.com/index.php?cat=articles&id=2012hanyu).
