Project "Medvedeva", a victory by the rules

Thank goodness we have YouTube to look at skaters from ages past when skating meant more than jumping with your hands over your head 7 to 10 times in four minutes.

I love all these subtle jabs people take at Evgenia. Like the only reason you care about it is because she is winning. If she was getting silvers or bronzes would you honestly care about her Tanos? I doubt it.

Why do you think those bad things what happened with Julia are only Eteri's fault? We don't have exact informations. Julia had some intersting reactions in K&C, so I hardly believe she is an easy going girl, especially after Sochi. She needed to handle an incredible popularity, media interest etc. That would be hard for an adult skater too, but she was only 15!!!!. I can imagine when he had problems she didn't want to work, she wanted to finish the skating. She had no motivations to overcome the difficulties. And we didn't talk about her mother she is a tipically " figure skating mother". We all know what does that mean.

I hope Julia will be back so we will have more exciting competitions in the future. :agree:

Yes, it can't have been easy for Julia to deal with all of the sudden fame and attention. It's not even easy for adults who win OGM. I am sure there were many different factors that made her seek a change and it can't possibly as simplistic as "Eteri couldn't deal with her puberty," what nonsense. And for the ones who keep pointing out that a few skaters left her...well, look how many she trains and who haven't left. And how many skaters do you think left Urmanov over his 10 years + as a coach? The number is higher, for sure.

What exactly is the "personal grudge" between Eteri and this reporter?

Anyway, I see no reason Lipnitskaya should just stay with Eteri throughout her career even if Eteri treats her fairly. I see her improving massively the short amount of time she moved to Urmanov, which might not be because Urmanov is a much better coach, but simply that she is getting a new perspective on skating, and less distraction, say. In some years maybe there will be a reshuffling of all of the current ladies and their coaches. For one, I don't see Pogorilaya staying with her current coach forever. I can see that this sort of personality change is a big deal in the Russian system, as salaries and rewards and some such are calculated by your student's success, but in real life it's quite normal. (Coaches being inconsiderate and insensitive when students are dealing with issues are also very commonplace, just saying. I have no doubt Lip and Eteri were not getting along at the end of their partnership.)

This is the biggest ******** ever. I find this article abrasive, offensive and I can't believe people actually like it and give it thumbs ups.

Vaitsekhovskaya is attention-*****, nothing more. She writes so many lies, personal attacks and she makes up stuff 'who said what to whom'. She's a low person, not real sports journalist.

edit: not to mention that she has personal grudge against Tutberidze.

Do you know what this is about?

I'm just glad that all people here have good sense of mind and don't buy this craaaaaaab. I remember her "love" for Yulia...

So even if Zhenia goes through puberty relatively clean, she will still inevitably fall into the same trap as Radionova - she will, due to completely objective reasons, lose the ability to compete against another “wonder-girl”, who (and this is not out of the question) will become another “project” of her own coach.

For now though, we have the ability to admire, applaud, be touched and… feel sorry for those who are older. Well, what can we do – such is sport.

"Zhenia" is 16. She has already gone through puberty. Radionova has done quite well despite growing several inches. She was never on top--last season she was almost always second to Liza. Radio beat Evgenia at Cup of Russia this year, as I recall. I expect to see both girls on the scene and regularly on the podium from now until the 2018 Olympics.

I doubt that she's already gone through puberty. She just turned 16. And the duration of puberty is often longer in athletic and/or very thin girls. The next two season will give as the answer. I also think that she'll be strong after puberty, but I think that a couple of problematic seasons could be ahead of her.

No amount of scoring inflation can tell me she is the best most complete skater in the world. I hate looking at her skeletal frame in the dress that just hangs on her. It's too big for that bony body. Way too thin. The legs look like she hasn't eaten in months. Really is this what ladies skating is going to be? I'm getting disinterested.

Puberty happens most typically between 11 and 13. It would be extremely unusual for a 16 year old to have not gone through puberty. She has certainly attained her full height by now.

She's pretty as a picture. If fact, if you do a Google image search for her the very first picture that pops up is this one from the recent Golden Skate article.

As long as she is healthy and feels good, go ahead on Evgenia, with your skinny-leg self! Maybe she can be a fashion model one day, if she grows another 10 inches in height. :)

Have no idea. But if I remember correctly it's her who started all that Lipnitskaia at team event at Sochi bullcrap. She said that Tutberidze demanded for Yulia to skate two programms at team event, then Tutberidze called her on that and said on federal TV chanel that it's all a big fat lie and it was a decision of the Federation itself. And then Vaitsekhovskaia was like 'Oh, but Piseev told me that'. Even Tarasova said it wasn't true, and she was all pro-Sotnikova for the team event at that time. So maybe it started before that, I don't know, but after this particular event Vaitsekhovskaia published a LOT of dirt on Tutberidze AND Lipnitskaia.

Evgenia is gorgeous, in a young and innocent kind of way. She is the whole package. I expect to see her on the World podium this year and next and on the Olympic podium in 2018. Injury is the only thing that can stop her.

Evgenia has a beautiful face I agree Mathman but she is way too thin. ETeri already said that she did not let Julia eat. No wonder Julia left this coach. She was hungry!!!! Let us not deny that anorexia and bulimia are rampant and even a few pounds can blow apart timing on triple jumps esp combos. She is winning because she can rotate the jumps. Do you really want to see this starved looking kid the ladies world champion because her scowling coach does not let her eat?

We don't know but we can see. She muscles her jumps because she is not strong enough. I am very concerned for all this girls. They are driven because they are pushed and want to be Adelina. It's not good.

Gracie, Ashley, Polina all are healthy examples for skaters. And they are very thin but thankfully no eating disorders I hope. Serious issue.

Oh well they seem to want to crown Evgenia this year. Go Gracie!!!! I hope the young skaters on GS never feel they are too fat! Women are pushed to extremes. We can't grow old gracefully. We must die our hair have liposuction it never ends.

I just hope this girl is as healthy as you seem to think. The gymnasts the dancers every young girl I know wants more than anything to be skinny. Too much craziness in this Crazy world. Have a hamburger Shenia!!!

If you see Evgenia has tiny legs, but her upper body is totally normal. For example Radionova's upper body is more thinner. I'm sure Zhenya's legs won't change too much. I read she begun to skate because wanted to improve her form. I think this is genetic nothing to do the eating disorders.

But yes, the skaters always on diet especially before the competition. I read this about the another Zhenya. ;) He eat just yogurt and banane, but this is his breakfast in "peacetime".... https://www.instagram.com/p/9-sCrNGy_v/?taken-by=plushenkoofficial OMG!

I like more the thinner female skaters those are more elegant for me. But I know this is just personal taste.

Everybody picking on Medvedeva's weight and appearence, please first go sort out the stuff with Brian Orser students. Elizabet Tursynbaeva looks like an 11 years old (srsl look at her and compare her with the Korean youngsters, they look around same age), and then people go and say Medvedeva is sick and starving even though she looks as a thin 16 years old.

Agree, and I have no reason to believe Tursynbaeva is sick or anorexic. Some people just grow earlier or later than others, some are naturally thin, short, tall, etc. Satoko is almost 18 and looks younger than Evgenia IMO.

Evgenia is winning a lot so people are just trying to pick on her for something, and she happens be to very thin, so there's so much focus on that. Evgenia started skating at the age of 3 and she's always been petite and wiry with skinny legs. Is it really that hard to believe that's just her natural build? To me it doesn't sound that crazy. It would be different if she was stocky as a little kid and then suddenly became very slender as a teenager like Antipova, but given she's always had this kind of build and is still quite young, I don't see any reason to assume she is starving and ill if neither she nor her coach has suggested that. A lot of girls don't start to put on weight until after puberty anyways, many will shoot up in height and develop some curves in their younger teens but not gain much weight until years later. Tamara Moskvina said in an interview that she keeps an eye on Yuko due to her being so thin but also admitted that she eats properly. And this is a 34 year old woman with the same height as Evgenia weighing 2 kilograms less!

Unless Evgenia or Eteri comes out and says something about Evgenia having an eating disorder or being starved, the poor girl should be given the benefit of the doubt and supported for the great things she is doing on the ice. All this weight shaming stuff is awful, on both ends of the spectrum. The author of this article is clearly just trying to knock Evgenia down a peg.

Evgenia is ectomorph, it's her body-type! She'll not gain any weight even if she will try to do so. Not in her age, that's for sure. Trust me, I was there, done that. I weighted 59 kilogramms with my 172 cm height when I was 16. And nothing, ABSOLUTELY nothing I did and eat helped me to gain weight. I ate tons of food, literally, morning and day and even night. It's just very fast metabolism. And only now, when I'm 176 cm I gained SOME weight (69 kg now). I eat a lot, do gainers and protein shakes, go to GYM 3 times a week and still can't gain even 70 kg. So, I don't know why everyone is so worked up about her body type. She will always be like that, she was always like that, from very young age. Of course she's on a diet, every athlete is, but she's not starving.

Yulia is different, she was closer to mesomorph body-type. She gain weight more easily than Zhenia. It's nature, people. Calm down.

Below is an article with a quote from Eteri.

Below is an article with a quote from Eteri.
One of her greatest problems now, coach Etery Tutberidze says, is keeping her weight down: 'She struggles with it... in my work, I never faced such cases - she just cannot eat at all. And I'm very sorry that she had to endure so much, but I cannot help it.'

Okay, that just disgusts me beyond all reason. She should not HAVE to endure that - you do not have to be shaped like a child to win Olympic medals. Carolina Kostner was a grown woman. Michelle Kwan and Irina Slutskaya both had healthy builds. And they all won gold medals at some point, even if not the Olympic one.

Sorry, but I don't think that you know what you're talking about. The start of the first menstruation is not the end of puberty! The end of puberty is between the age of 17 and 18 in a girl and the height growth stops at about 20! And puberty can be delayed due to the reasons I already mentioned above (weight & physical exertion).
Did you also think that Lipnitskaya had gone through puberty in Sochi? Well, she looks quite different now, her appearance changed vastly in only a couple of months.
I would be dissapointed if the Evgenia we see now is the already the grown woman. I mean, Yulia is much prettier now.
