2016 World Championships Ladies Free Skate

Did you actually see her in person? Or maybe you just like Broadway theatrical style skating.

Satoko definitely is one of the more boring skaters. Slightly better than Gold in my opinion but leaps and bounds behind the other ladies in this regard as far as I'm concerned.

Because we don't?

The perils of a subjective sport.

We have personal bias, that is different than systematic bias. Uncorrelated idiosyncratic bias should cancel itself out across scores, systematic bias for a particular skater across all judges matter. This is usually what we, as fans, are upset about.

Monster score for a fall and a 2z. Too bad though because she blew a huge opportunity that may never return.

Maybe yes, maybe no. Try being a fan of So Youn and you would wish she had Gracie's "failings". She wasn't up to it tonight. That's a fact. But that was a tidal wave she was facing unlike what she faced at Nationals. Remember the old dittty; that what doesn't destroy me, makes me stronger. She's young and she got a tiny taste of greatness. It'll make her hungry or it won't. We shall see.

Just have to mention in case some people don't know this, Zhenya just became the first figure skater EVER (in all disciplines) to win the Junior and Senior World titles in back to back seasons. She is also the youngest Ladies World champion in 19 years since Tara Lipinski. She is a MF REVELATION!!

I went looking on Wikipedia and I'm pretty she is the first to win Senior Worlds in her Senior Debut season, Oksana Baiul won Worlds on her debut but in the previous season she had already competed once as a senior, correct me if I'm wrong

This was some of the highest level skating I've ever seen, so many clean performances, I'm so impressed

I think it has more to do with the Russians favoring jumping technique that relies on fast rotation, IE, their competitive groups starting from a young age. Inherently, that technique has an expiration date.

It's a shame and completely unnecessary to train your girls in such a way that they completely lose their jumps at age 16.

Like Anna? Radio probably managed to make it with no jumps somehow to worlds? Tukt last season?

I have to say, I feel like the crowd has been incredible all week. I haven't noticed single performance where their response didn't match my own. But maybe I'm a biased American too.

The crowd was wonderful. I swear I recognized some of the people sitting front row from the last time Worlds was in America (2009)!

Thanks for these factoids! She is like the Yuzuru of the ladies world.

Evgenia - Let me be very clear. Evgenia skated great, I agree. But sorry, as I have said in the other thread she definitely does not deserve more than 140 in the FS. The flute should definitely be called if Mao's was called.

Ashley - I just can't say how happy I am for Ashley. She gave the best performance of her career and I, I am just speechless! :yahoo:

Anna - She deserves a trip around the world for NO FALL IN BOTH PROGRAM

Gracie - At least not a bad program! You did well enough!! You still got a small GOLD medal!!!

Satoko - Lovely as always. But terrible PCS score, should deserve 2 points more. And who is that judges that gave her all 7s?

Elena - I know THERE'S NOTHING YOU FEAR but I fear that dress a little and your landings tbh. Hope to see you perfect next season!

Mao - She has metamorphosed into a real Butterfly. No need to care about the score cuz it is rubbish. The message to the others is "I'm back bithces!"

Rika - She murdered the PROGRAM. I thoroughly enjoyed it, so did she. SO nice to see her so confident and putting a smile on her face. You should do that more!!!

Part of the scoring is worse, if not the worst, since Sochi

Sure, Tukt was the champion last year, after not being able to go to worlds for quite some time after her debut as a senior in which she won everything.

Btw, where is Tukt now? And wunderkind Lip for that matter? And Olympic champion Adelina?

Evgenia actually has very pretty delayed rotations especially in her Toe loops in my opinion.

Guys, you need to see Anna live. She blew me away during her SP. She is passionate and skates big. Her jumps are just as big, if not bigger, than Gracie's. She made me a fan.

Completely agree. She also has a great presence on the ice!

This is true! And Mrs. P & I witnessed this together! Good times.

Some thoughts on the ladies from countries that I care about:

Ashley Wagner: You go girl! Hope this becomes the spark that brings US figure skating fandom out of the dark ages.

Gracie Gold: Needs a sports shrink ASAP. She'll never have a better chance to medal at a WC, and she'll need to figure out what's wrong with her to ever have another one.

Mirai Nagasu: Should have no doubt now about working on a triple axel. With it, she stands a punchers chance of making Olympics on merit; without, she'll need many more wardrobe malfunctions.

Rika Hongo: I fear she has peaked. She may well be able to literally hear Wakaba and Honda breathing down her neck.

Asada Mao: Showed that she still has what it takes to make the Olympic Team, assuming that merely participating would be good enough for her to accept.

Satoko Miyahara: I believe that she has seen the limit as to how far sheer will power will take her. She should beg Tarasova to help.

The reason is the high level of competition.

If they were the only relevant skaters like the situation is in USA, they'd have obviously been there. Just because they aren't doesn't mean they are currently bad skaters.

:rolleye:

Satoko is the single most refined young skater among the ladies. Possibly equal to Mao. On a night like this when Mao skated nervous, I might even give Satoko the highest PCS. Of course her TES shouldn't be that high. I thought she should have ended on something like 67 TES and 73 PCS for 140.

I seriously wonder if the judges hold her PCS down because in the back of their head they know they can't do anything about her TES score which may seem a bit high to some judges. Hard to tell. I think though a few skaters maybe received extra high PCS instead of her PCS being actually underscored. It's just so complicated and so many outside factors at play that all we can do is speculate but I don't think she should be scoring over 135 when you take her whole package into consideration. Maybe I'm being unfair here?

I would still score Zhenya, Anna, and Ashley higher than Satoko on PCS. Obviously it's just my opinion but she sort of lacks an athletic edge (not dissimilar to Zijun) and is a tad bit on the safe side. Her layback spin is from another world and she has solid footwork no doubt but I still think it's a tad shy of top of the world.
