2016 World Championships Ladies Free Skate

Whatever else you say about Ashley, girlfriend can create a character on ice like nobody's bizness.

Like NOBODY's business. And about PCS, I'll say no more :) I'm thrilled!

Why did Pogo not acknowledge Ashley on her podium? Was she pissed? A cultural thing? Reserved? Ashley always goes out of her way to be gracious in victory and defear- so I'm not critical, just confused.

Did you actually see her in person? Or maybe you just like Broadway theatrical style skating.

Every time I see or hear something like this, I think that someone knows absolutely nothing about Broadway.

Sure, Tukt was the champion last year, after not being able to go to worlds for quite some time after her debut as a senior in which she won everything.

Btw, where is Tukt now? And wunderkind Lip for that matter? And Olympic champion Adelina?

Tukt is getting ready for her next competition later this month. Lip is getting ready for the next season. Adelina is enjoying her life.

No, but not everyone likes Broadway and theater either.

Not everyone likes plenty of forms of art/entertainment. Heck, a lot of people don't like figure skating. Doesn't mean Broadway/theater should be denigrated as somehow being less impressive than other types of art/entertainment.

I get that Satoko is a polarizing skater, partially because of her jumps. She also accomplishes excellent choreography, although her projection might leave something to be desired, as well as her perceived commitment to interpretation.

Just because an interpretation is OTT doesn't mean it's bad.

Agreed! It's important to remember that this was actually a fairly decent skate for Gracie. If the Gracie of a year ago had to skate in the position she was in, I think she would have done much worse.

Normally I would agree.... except that Frank and Gracie have both said that it is almost entirely mental. She has improved VASTLY when it comes to competing, don't get my wrong, but it's mental. That 3+3 at the beginning should be cake. She is flawless in practice but can never deliver, especially if she is in front/leading/favored. She has a sport psychologist, which is who I credit for the improvement in her performance. Of course, anything can happen, but I don't see her improving in terms of competing. Tbh, she doesn't even seem that interested. She has mentioned numerous times that she will be done after the next Olympics (if she goes) and doesn't see herself skating as long as Ashley. I think that kind of mentality hurts her skating. I have a few friends that skated with her growing up that said she has always been like this (her sister is way more into it than she is... too bad their coach when they were younger forced her sister into ice dance for a while). Like, obviously she is a leading lady in the US, so I'm not trying to say anything against her, but if anything, trying to compete with Wagner will make it worse.

The reason is the high level of competition.

If they were the only relevant skaters like the situation is in USA, they'd have obviously been there. Just because they aren't doesn't mean they are currently bad skaters.

I think the reason is more than that. But I think Medvedeva may be the exception- and maybe Pogo now, too.

I think it was just a simple "excited & forgot" - at the end of the press conference she went over to Ashley and they shared a super sweet hug. Two of them, actually.

:rolleye:

Satoko is the single most refined young skater among the ladies. Possibly equal to Mao. On a night like this when Mao skated nervous, I might even give Satoko the highest PCS. Of course her TES shouldn't be that high. I thought she should have ended on something like 67 TES and 73 PCS for 140.

I have been a fan of Satoko's since I first saw her, but in the midst of so much great skating, she got a little lost. Dave and Jenny noted that she looks better on TV than in person and I think there is something to that. In the short, she tended to skate towards the middle of the ice and, being small, it made her skating look a little small. I still think she isn't given enough credit on the second mark. And don't get me started on Mirai's PCS.

I seriously wonder if the judges hold her PCS down because in the back of their head they know they can't do anything about her TES score which may seem a bit high to some judges. Hard to tell. I think though a few skaters maybe received extra high PCS instead of her PCS being actually underscored. It's just so complicated and so many outside factors at play that all we can do is speculate but I don't think she should be scoring over 135 when you take her whole package into consideration. Maybe I'm being unfair here?

I would still score Zhenya, Anna, and Ashley higher than Satoko on PCS. Obviously it's just my opinion but she sort of lacks an athletic edge (not dissimilar to Zijun) and is a tad bit on the safe side. Her layback spin is from another world and she has solid footwork no doubt but I still think it's a tad shy of top of the world.

If we were talking about pre-Vancouver, even pre-Sochi levels of PCS, then 66 for Satoko is acceptable. But we're talking about inflated scoring for everyone now, and 140 for what Satoko is about right. If I put her in, says, Worlds 2013, she would have something like 65 in her SP (considering Yuna was in the lead with 69.97) and 127 and no more (about 61 TES and 66 PCS) for the FS, given her a total of 192, which would have her in 4th behind Yuna, Carolina and Mao. Which seems about right.

Everyone is overblowing Anna not greeting Ashley, she did her Scheherazade pose, Evgenia and Ashley posed back, they laughed and then she went on the podium and hugged Evgenia who happened to be beside her. That's it.

Also want to add:

Everyone needs to stop complaining about how "skater A was rude to skater B for not....blah blah blah" and everything like that. Maybe Anna didn't hug Ashley because she doesn't know her and maybe she thinks Ashley would be uncomfortable??? Anna didn't do it to be rude. This is the best moment of the careers of all the skaters on that podium and I'm sure none of them are trying to ruin it with snideness.
OK. It just looked very odd; I've never seen no acknowledgement before- it looked rude to me- I'm glad it wasn't.

At least US has proved there are more than 3 relevant skaters: Mirai, Polina, Ashley, and Gracie. Not sure why US is the go-to target when someone brings up that other skaters have struggled to stay relevant.

LOLOL... i saved myself 160+ pages. Thanks!
This is surprisingly insightful... :coffee:

It did pretty decently for everything else, but it also just spits out random stuff according to its algorithm, so... :slink:

200 pts is now the difference between 7th and 8th place

Everyone is overblowing Anna not greeting Ashley, she did her Scheherazade pose, Evgenia and Ashley posed back, they laughed and then she went on the podium and hugged Evgenia who happened to be beside her. That's it.

I didn't know and I appreciate you explaining- I thought it was protocol. Good to know.

Sure, if you say so. Coincidence that the skaters who go through puberty just happen to be the ones who don't make onto the national team?

Me? I don't get invested in Russian skaters, knowing they'll be kicked out once they reach the retirement age of 18. Wouldn't be surprised if next year, Anna and Radio become the new Lip and Adelina and Tukt.

At least US has proved there are more than 3 relevant skaters: Mirai, Polina, Ashley, and Gracie. Not sure why US is the go-to target when someone brings up that other skaters have struggled to stay relevant.

US is the first country that comes to mind for that situation and definitely the best example I can think of. While I love Mirai she's no medal threat.
