2016 World Championships Ladies Free Skate

Honestly, as lovely as Mao skated, she looked out of shape (her complexion was off and she was very sweaty). Plus, I've never seen her skate so slow and cautious. She just didn't have the same spark as before. When you combine that with her underrotation issues, it just didn't leave that great an impression.

I read that she is still recovering from a foot injury that took away some practice time before Worlds, so she wasn't in her best condition. But then again, maturity in presentation should count for something in a field that is quite lacking in it.

Thoughts time!

- First, of course, as great at this event was, it would have been even better with Kailani. Just saying. :drama:

- I thought straightaway that the standard was going to be pretty high. And so it was! Plenty of movement going on.

- Among the earlier groups I thought Lindfors and Rajicova were great and did a really good job.

Last group because my brain is fuddled:

RADIONOVA: I thought she skated very well, set the standard for the rest of the group under a high, high bar. The dialogue is still jarring. Like Jorik, this program would be a thousand times better without dialogue.

MEDVEDEVA: I LOVED HER. She was absolutely AMAZING! Brilliant! She absolutely laid it down and smashed it out of the ballpark. Everyone thought they'd cracked her on Thursday, but she just responded brilliantly. For me there was no doubt in my mind about the win. She skated incredibly well. I loved every second of it.

MIYAHARA: I thought she was a little...flat after Medvedeva, but I have to say, I feel a bit sorry for her. It seems unfair to me that the tech panels have allowed her to get away with it all season then suddenly started dinging her at Worlds. They could at least be consistent about it. She did a very good job! That spiral section was just beautiful.

POGORILAYA: I thought she was great too! But I was a bit surprised at the difference in score between her and Medvedeva. Nevertheless, she absolutely brought it, and I was so happy for her.

GOLD: Oh, Gracie.

WAGNER: Just magnificent! Blew the roof off the place! Wonderful! And then the silver medal for her. Well done Ashley.

This is how you do a proper tano

I saw that. Actually Rika's is my favorite this year but I don't believe in the "everyone has to do it the same way" concept. In fact...I think Zhenya's look really good myself. I'm actually surprised so many people complain about it. It's not like the judges have to give it positive GOE if they don't think it adds to the jump. It's not required or anything.

Geez guys. She was distracted by Evgenia.... what appeared to be Evgenia prompting her to do her end pose.

Besides, different event do it differently. At the 2014 Olympics, bronze medalist was announced > bronze medalist steps on podium and receive medal... then silver medalist was announced. Rinse/repeat.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sgf1aby6qTQ --- Omg Denis, how DARE you step on the podium before hugging Yuzu and Patrick! Such poor podium etiquette boo hiss!
Um, first off have a seat...
I actually defended Pogorilaya, and I didn't really think it's that big of a deal. I DID mention that Jin Boyang did the same...I am just making the point that to be a champion is to present yourself as one. I'm sure there was no ill will towards Ashley from Anna.
Secondly, the Sochi ceremony was a completely different layout (not even on the ice), so it is not relevant to the ISU ceremonies. Yes, when the Olympics do the opposite order, the champion congratulates the bronze medalist, then the silver medalist, then takes their position. It's to present sportsmanship and class.

Fine if you don't want to compare Yuna's WR with Evgenia's score because the calculations are different, lets use her Les Mis or Adios Notions then, is that fair now? And if you really think Evgenia's LP deserves more than this two programs, well, Amen then.

PCS-wise Evgenia paled in comparison but the overall program was excellent and much harder than Adios nonino from a technical standpoint (and I mean spins, jumps). Rhapsody in blue was more sophisticated but let's also remember the judges have decided to boost PCS way more these days since Vancouver and elements are worth slightly more.

Are you guys talking about Pogo being so excited she forgot to hug Ashley? Jackie Wong reported that Pogo gave Ashley a big hug at the press conference and apologised for forgetting earlier. Ashley seemed like she didn't mind!

I'm rewatching the whole event on a big screen now :D I drank too much coffee and Coke, can't go back to sleep.
One quick question for those who know Russian: what does "krasna" mean? Beautiful? I've heardso much these last days... I wonder.

I'm pretty sure you can't compare them like that, but anyway Evgenia's interpretation is wonderful.

I loved her interpretation. There was a story and a vibrancy to her performance. Not 72 worthy but she's not as bad as some are making her out to be (as expected).

Klasno = cool, very well
Krasnaya = red
;)

I don't know if we are thinking of the same word, but красивый (krasívyj) means "beautiful" in Russian.

Gracie, let it all out and cry in your hotel. And then when you get back home, get a new choreographer. Someone to help you learn how to emote and picks better music/programs for you that fits your personality. I'm pretty sure ice princess and old war horse programs like Phantom and Firebird is not you. Also, not saying you definitely should, but maybe consider getting a new coach too.

It pains me to say this....but I think a coaching change may need to be in the works. For as much as Frank Carroll has done with previous champions, I just don't think Gracie and Frank are a good fit. Frank literally told Gracie to calm down before the program started, and I thought "NO! I want the wild and crazy Gracie to come out!" I just feel that since Gracie has gone to Frank, her jumps have become a little more cautious and conservative. They are beautiful jumps when executed well (OBVIOUSLY), however Gracie needs that coach who is going to get her riled up, send her out to the ice, and have her execute her jumps with the high energy and spring she used to get. That's what makes Gracie so great, is her huge jumps!
I honestly wish Gracie had maybe a Brian Orser or a Richard Callahan next to her on the boards, to help her feel confident technically. She needs that inspiration from other skaters the likes of Javi Fernandez and Yuzu. I guarantee you if Orser was coaching her this year, we would have seen two Rippon lutzes in the free. Frank has to stop being so conservative with her in the free! Hell, if you wanted her to bank everything on a flip in the short, and yet you only have her doing a 2A-3T in the free?
Whatever, I still think Gracie will be a World and Olympic Champion one day. She's just too good not to be.

My guess is that you were hearing "prekrasno" (прекрасно), which I would translate as "excellent."

Completely agree on the jumps. I think her jumps have regressed. Look at the 2014 nationals, when she won, especially her Lutzes. No comparison to her lutzes today. Still great, but not on the level they were. I never like her and Frank together.

Agreed and I would ask why the judges feel it necessary to low-ball Mao's pcs??

Mao's PCS was lowballed, for sure. But it makes absolutely no difference to the overall standings. Not to mention, she made errors, whereas Evgenia had a clean skate.

Gracie getting higher PCS I can't agree with. Ashley's was high but I think her interpretation is more engaging than Mao's - more emotion, fire and attack where she needs it.
