2016 World Championships Ladies Free Skate

Ok now on to the more serious matter.

I didn't watch NBC (because why bother).... but was Donald Trump there or what?

It was. Trust if it was the reverse and Ashley did that to Evgenia or Anna, Americans wouldn't hear the end of it. Pro Russian forum members on here already called the crowd "anti-Russian" tonight because they didn't stand up fast enough in their standing-o to Evgenia. :palmf:

I believe this move by Anna wasn't intended and certainly not ill. She was overwhelmed, imo.:scratch2: It's her 1st major podium:) But hope this doen't repeat, of course (congratulating part, I mean:laugh:)!

What an amazing competition. Congrats Ashley!! I'm so glad she delivered on home ice. From what I can tell, the crowd in Boston has been super supportive and awesome.

Mao was lovely, but really, really slow. The program looked very labored and without the speed and energy of the top girls.

Mao is not slow. If you compare her rink coverage to other skaters, you'll see that Mao's rink coverage is superb.

It's just that unlike younger skaters who generally does crossovers after crossover to accelerate and then boom, does something and then slows down, her speed and flow across the ice is constant and her blade is always doing something interesting.

It's a different style of skating to someone like Anna Pogo, but requires a great deal of skating skills that someone like Anna doesn't have.

Guys, you need to see Anna live. She blew me away during her SP. She is passionate and skates big. Her jumps are just as big, if not bigger, than Gracie's. She made me a fan.

That's so nice:) Tell us more, please, about your and the crowd's impressions as you've been there in the arena:love:

Mao doesn't skate very fast, but her stroking is soft and her movements are graceful. Other skaters generate speed through crossovers, sometimes with very bad posture and their stroking isn't smooth. Their skating look more labored and effortful to me. :/

Have you guys ever wondered that maybe Zhenya gets SS points because she's able to make slow skating VERY smooth and graceful? (This obviously isn't why, it's clearly inflation but just food for thought :) )

Her so-called slow and smooth skating mainly consists of transitions;) And not the easy ones, too!

I think if Worlds was not in the U.S. Anna would have beaten Ashley for the silver and it would have been Russia 1-2 :slink: Of course they couldn't let that happen on U.S. ice so they lucked out that one American didn't bomb.

I also think its safe to say that Gracie Gold is by far on a consistent basis the most over marked lady currently competing right now, no question about it. I mean it would make some sense if she had a reputation as a winner or skating cleanly multiple times at big events but she doesn't. Ever since her arrival on the scene she's been making costly mistakes over and over, competition after competition. No World or Olympic medals in her shoe box and yet she gets the reputation points as if she were Michelle Kwan. There some real hardcore politiking at work :bang:

I'm sorry, but Anna's Short Program was FAR superior to the Scheherazade long she did tonight. Honestly, I didn't get ANY Scheherazade from that program. I felt ZERO connection to the story of Scheherazade by Pogo. Sorry, but a story about how a woman made a heartbroken, murderous king fall in love with her and stave off her execution for 1000(1001?) nights with 1000 stories was not shown AT ALL. She shows ZERO emotional range in the program. She had the same expression on her face through the whole program. It was a clean skate that was scored well. She deservedly won the bronze. I felt more emotional connection to the music from Radionova than Pogo.

Ashley embodied Satine, didn't fall, and had a skate worthy of a medal. However, so did Medvedeva, and her's was more difficult AND cleaner.

Mao should have had the highest PCS of the night, followed by Ashley.

Anyone who says that the crowd tonight wasn't enthusiastic, needs the shut the hell up. They stood for ALL the right people. Perhaps too enthusiastic for Gracie, but Mao, Satoko, Medvedeva, Mirai, and Ashley all got healthy standing ovations. All women got applauded, and they WEREN'T cheering for other skaters during the score of the previous competitor. So spare me.

It was a great night of skating. I think the right people landed on the podium. I think Satoko should have been higher, but I would have a hard time picking between her and Pogo for Bronze. I think Medvedeva was the rightful winner. Hopefully she's not like the past Russian ladies champs, and can sustain it for more than one season (or two months, in the case of Sotnikova.)

Fine if you don't want to compare Yuna's WR with Evgenia's score because the calculations are different, lets use her Les Mis or Adios Notions then, is that fair now? And if you really think Evgenia's LP deserves more than this two programs, well, Amen then.

Quick question: have you seen any Scheherazade by let's say Bolshoi or Mariinsky? :) The story goes way deeper and more complex than you just described... ;)

Wow... She doesn't seem to be taking this loss in stride at all.

"Once a choker, always a choker" I guess...

She should not be talking about "embarrassed" she is, she needs to focus on herself and not what others think.
geeeshh. I think she is being a little hard on herself.
It is a lesson Gracie, take from it what you can and use it for next time. You'll be that much stronger.

Did anyone notice in the medal ceremony, Anna didn't congratulate Ashley?
I did, and it made me think she was being rude. But there was a moment after the press conference where Anna came over to Ashley and had a nice exchange/hugging moment, so I think she may have just been very overwhelmed with all the excitement. HOWEVER, I DO think that medal contenders need to work on their etiquette when stepping on the podium, because Jin Boyang did that last night too, by congratulating Yuzuru before Javi. Proper etiquette is, you take your bows, you congratulate the champion first, then the silver medalist, THEN you may take your step. But you know...details...
I loved the entire women's competition. Evgenia was supreme, not a single foot out of place. Ashley was brilliant, performed to the top rafters (she's just gotta keep pushing technically and keep up those triple-triples, but she seems to be doing a good job at keeping her body healthy considering her age in this sport). Anna was ANOTHER underdog story and she really did well (is it bad that I secretly was hoping for a Pogo fall tonight?), and she just needs to work on her flow and extension, really own her long limbs. Poor Gracie, she'll get em' next time! She's just gotta work on keeping her nerves at bay. This will be a building moment for her, and I expect some even better performances next year. However, she did seem to jinx herself at the beginning of the season by saying she wanted to win worlds in Boston. That kind of goal should be kept to herself, so that she does not disappoint herself when these moments do not come true. Satoko, as always, delivered, and yet the performance was just a little stale to me....maybe it's that we've seen the program clean so many times already, that without any triple-triples, the program lacks excitement....but that's just me. Elena....what was up with the outfit??? Homegirl landed the jumps, but I took 5 points off her components just for that dress, the gloves, the colors....she lost it for me even before the program even started. And great to see Mao still attempting the triple axel and skating a pretty great free skate. In this field, you just have to have more than one big element to keep up. Would love to see Mao attempt a triple axel-triple toe, at least ONCE before she decides to retire! Wouldn't that be something?! Midori Ito, her hero, did them in practice, so it's a goal that she can strive for! I think she will keep trying for another season, after she takes a deserved rest. I expect Mao and Mirai Nagasu to continue to push their limits, proving that the Vancouver veterans can still keep up with these Russian and Japanese phenoms.
Lastly I want to say, no matter how many medals we won...US WOMEN'S Figure Skating is back with vengeance, and Ashley Wagner and Gracie Gold will be looking to go to battle with the Russians and Japanese. 2018 is going to be a record breaking year, Pyeongchang better get READY for the fireworks! :dance2::hap10::party2:
