Patrick Chan

Oh I just heart him. That's a great and honest interview.
I think I forgive his lack of PR savvy and appreciate his filter-less interviews because it's exactly how I would be after a competition like that (frustrated with myself that I couldn't get things done no matter the conditions).
He was on top for so long and pushed the sport and now it's pushing back and he is feeling it. But I believe he can push it in yet another way too and we will see that in the next year or two. He knows what he needs and he knows what it takes and what he can bring and I'm so excited for that. I bet a lot of people are.
We all witnessed his greatness at 4CC where even the staunchest non-fan did a 180 and admitted it was a masterpiece. Believe me, nobody wants him to quit and I'm glad he's not!
I was thinking that it must have been so exciting to be sitting in a position where a medal was a possibility (and would have been a certainty any other year really). His season was bumpy and it's almost like he was accustomed to being the underdog and using his brilliant free (that he has been nailing all year) to boost him in the standings. Then all of a sudden he is within striking distance of not only the bronze (not sure what he was aware of going out onto the ice). No matter what he says, he is a winner and a competitor and I'm sure he wanted a medal, anyone in his position would (especially if they are highly competitive which he obviously is since he has launched a comeback). 4CC would have made him more hungry and hopeful I bet.

Johnny Weir won't miss any opportunity to criticize or scold Patrick from the past and in the future. I TRY not to take his words serious. I heard that Johnny scolded Patrick for complaining about the ice... Obviously he's never skated in adverse conditions before... :rolleye:
I believe that Johnny Weir was wrong and a bit disrespectful. The way he has scolded Patrick makes seem that Patrick always finds an excuse when things don' t work how he would have liked, but he has NEVER done it until Yesterday(when he was right, by the way).
Sorry if i don't know how to quote part of a comment but only the entire one

Thanks, Calica! Like SGrand said above, he was honest and real. Some may interpret his behavior as "diva-ish", but he had every right to feel and express frustration at his subpar performance. Also, he is not arrogant and insensitive to others, as he was afraid he might have hurt a lot of people afterwards. Perhaps Kathy bore the brunt of his frustration. She's been so supportive and understanding this season - kudos to her.

My favorite quotes from the article:

When you've had the taste of what it feels — not the medal, not the winning — but what near perfection feels like, you're always striving for that ... I was very far from that. That was the main frustration."

Yes, he was near perfection at 4CC, and after that fabulous skate, no doubt he wanted to repeat it again. He - and we - all expected him to repeat it again. Who knew that the ice would become his nemesis again? IMHO Patrick's comeback season has been more dramatic and exciting than a TV show. Now I am eagerly awaiting next season!

Asked if he believes he can rise to the level of Hanyu and Fernandez, Chan said "no doubt about that."

"I know that if I can skate my very best ... if I can have a little more time to just get used to being in my body on the ice in front of a crowd in a competitive scene where I can do both a good short program and a good long program, the sky's the limit."

I'm happy that he's confident, and 4CC proved that his best days are not behind him at all. Hope he has a successful 4S summer!

Patrick would do well to make a list of every unexpected condition and scenario that he may encounter during a performance, and have solutions readily available to counteract them. This way a) these situations are no longer unexpected and b) he will know right away what to do and not get distracted by it. His life may not be at stake, but his performance, his livelihood and even his health are. He could stand to be even more proactive in making conditions better for himself and his fellow skaters.

I think there is a word for this way of living or preparation for an event. Paranoia.

A person's energy and resources should be wisely and productively allocated. We should always take proper precautions for reasonable adverse possibilities, but covering all possibilities is impossible and wasteful drain of life force.

But on a cheery note, many Japanese fans said that the boards should have gotten out of the way when Patrick did his 3T!

Damn right! :2thumbs:

CBC just showed his SP again and I have to say, he looked so good. I don't care about the fall, he enjoyed himself and was relaxed and smiling. Loved seeing that! It's a new level for him to achieve that.
Oh I just love this gala performance so much, he is so into it, much like his Chopin.
It sounds like he will do 2 new programs for next season which is great, but I wouldn't mind seeing this gala made into a short for him (Carol Lane mentioned it during his skate.....where her and Kurt would not stop talking [emoji849]).
I hope he does this for Stars on Ice so I can see it live!
Any thoughts on what he should skate to next season? I already miss it and it all just ended. [emoji24]

lol... i m recording it to watch it later :) the season will end a tad later for me....

my main request for Patrick next season aside the 4S ;) is no warhorses ;) ... at the beginning of his career, he did enough ;) even if it was always tasteful! Now that he is so much more grown up, I'd like something deep and original... he can go for crowd pleasing music for the OG :)

Here's the exhibition gala on DailyMotion - B.ESP version (with the music not muted):

I really appreciate what the commentators said about Patrick and the ice at the end of his performance (4:28):

"The ice was not in great condition for the long, and it really threw his performance. He loves to skate on good ice. It's the worst ice I've seen at a World Championship for a long time."

Thank you, Nicky and Simon!

BTW, anyone notice that Patrick skates "Mess Is Mine" when he wins, and "Dear Prudence/Blackbird" when he didn't win? Very interesting...

YES!!!! Totally agree! He doesn't need the warhorses at all, he is too good for them. If he wants to do that for the Oly's, go ahead, but I think he may find that he won't need them, I like where he's been going.

Thank you so much! That was much better than listening to Carol talk about his technical deficiencies lol. [emoji849] Kurt was very complementary at least.
Interesting observation, I wonder if there is a method to that for him or if he just chooses.
Also, they mention that Meghan and Eric alluded to this maybe being the last time we see Patrick. I saw this mentioned in another thread. Seeing them announce him, I didn't really get that feeling.

:curse:

calica you were right to be angry... the caption was distracting..... sometimes they zoomed in when Patrick was doing footwork GRRRR

regarding Meagan and Eric saying he is leaving ? ARGHHH..... NO! NO! NO!!!!!! I would prefer if he left on a good note.

CBC is barely showing any of the skating.... i guess I will have to get the gala routines from youtube....

I doubt he will skate to Dear Prudence/Blackbird in this year's Stars on Ice because he skated to this number in the 2015 tour. I remember when i first saw this last year on youtube I was really disappointed but when I saw it live it was fantastic. You can really see his GLIDE.

yeah... these articles make me feel good.... I am being selfish... but I had resigned myself after 2014, that Patrick was gone... (hence my username... yeah yeah... you have heard it.... he was 4ever in my heart the best skater... even kurt browning says so !) but now that he came back, gave us the BEST FP ever, i am not yet willing to let him go.

so bring on articles about his next projects.... and when he does indeed retire, I hope that it will be in 2018, and that I will be mentally ready for it... i also hope that I will have seen him live.... I cannot believe how unlucky I was, living in Vancouver for the games and being denied a ticket for anything but curling... SIGH

I was not sure if any Chan fans made it to Worlds but wanted to share a bit about my week. I'm not a skater. It was my first competition and I attended most of the men's practices and all of the events. I really enjoyed seeing Patrick skate live. Sometimes he had a bit of trouble with his jumps and other times he looked great. I was very close to the ice during practices and Patrick is very muscular (in a good way :), compact and fast! It was nice that he received a lot of applause at practices (Mao and Yuzu did also). He looked good during the SP, and I had high hopes for him and the other men. My heart broke for for Patrick, Shoma, and Yuzuru with their rough free skates. Some people were commenting that these three use their edges more than the others and seemed affected more by the poor ice conditions. I felt like the crowd was quite partisan towards the Americans (standing O's for all of them, really?) and did my best to cheer loudly for the others, especially my guys. Was thrilled to see that Patrick was selected for the exhibition - his number really showed off his great skating. As I said I'm not a skater, nor a particularly knowledgeable fan but wanted to share some of of my impressions.

Some stats to make everyone feel good.

Patrick is now 8th overall in world standings with 3363 points!

http://www.isuresults.com/ws/ws/wsmen.htm

He has the 3rd highest free skate score ever (personal best), which he earned this season at Four Continents:

Ironically, he also sits 3rd in highest short program score ever (personal), from his 2013 TEB skate.

http://www.isuresults.com/isujsstat/pbsmsp.htm

And he sits 3rd in total score (note that Boyang Jin is right behind him):

Not bad for a comeback year at all!
