Patrick Chan

Welcome, Eric, welcome to the fest where we celebrate Patrick and his skating! I hope you stay and have fun with us.

I especially appreciate that you and I share favorite skaters such as Takahiko, Jeremy, and of course Patrick, all with wonderful skating skills.

Thanks, Violett Bliss! Yes, I'm excited you and I have much common in favorite skaters! I love skaters who skates like without any friction as if they are delivered by something magical or floating on the ice:)

Welcome, Eric! Thanks for sharing your on-site experience with us! When did you see Patrick skate in person?

Hahaha, that might be a group number for the exhibition gala...

Today's "Where in the world is Patrick Chan?":

He was spotted in Nagoya, jogging in the cold wind. So glad he is so recognizable there!

Thanks Vivley,

The first time I saw Patrick on the ice in person was Stars on Ice Japan tour in January 2015. To be honest, I was there to see Takahiko skating(it was my first time to saw him skating in person though I had been his fan since 2008), and I thought Patrick was a bit overrated like some people said(sorry,no offence), but found I was totally wrong. I was instantly absorbed in his performance and have been his huge fan from that point on! Later, in ,August, I saw Patrick @ The ICE too. I was so excited to see his Black bird:) He and Taka's close, they were so cute laughing and talking on the ice together!!

Eric, Patrick and Takahiko have been very good friends since their Junior years and Taka usually shows him around in Japan. They were roommates for TEB and Patrick was the translator for Taka in France. Taka was very upset about his collision with Daisuke in China and during the press conference, only when Patrick walked in did Taka smile and get up to greet him. Patrick, of course comforted him about the incident for which Taka felt so guilty. Good to know the friendship continues and I hope they keep it up in retirement(s).

I'd love to see video of that moment.

Thanks, Eric for your comments! I'm happy to hear about one of Patrick's close friends!

And for today's location report:

Patrick and the gang took a dance class! The angle of his face reminds me of that childhood video posted by Marin:

Patrick went to a party, dressed the same:

And here's a fan pic of his Tango:

Also, Japan was hit by an earthquake today - I'm sure everyone is safe, but it probably jolted the SOI team.

4everchan, better luck next time! :ghug:

Here's some important news that will impact Patrick: The ISU just released an updated scale of values for the 2016-2017 season. There are changes to GOEs, etc. They also proposed a change concerning repeated jumps in combinations.

Read here: http://static.isu.org/media/317288/2000-sptc-sov-and-goe_2016-2017.pdf

It looks like they are proposing to only invalidate the second repeated jump if it's in a combo, and not the entire combo.

Short Program, Repetitions*:
If the same jump is executed twice as a solo jump and as a part of the jump combination, the
second execution will not be counted (if this repetition is in a jump combination, only the individual jump which is not according to the above requirements will not be counted)
.
Free Skating, extra jump elements*:
If an extra jump(s) is executed, only the individual jump(s), which is not according to the requirements will have no value. The jumps are considered in the order of execution.
*Subject to Congress 2016 decision.

It only took Yuzuru and Patrick getting dinged hard this past season for the ISU to wake up. But glad that it might be happening finally!

Too late for Oda who could really benefit from this.

I surely hope they would increase the BV of step sequences, or rather at least bring back the original values. That would balance the jump advantage just a little.

As well, combos should be rewarded more than the sum of the BV, especially the super difficult ones. Penalty is also too harsh on any combo mistake.

I haven't read through the new rules yet but it seems these issues are not dealt with.
