Patrick Chan

this is super interesting. As you know, some of us have followed the boy when he was a boy ;) I started to follow him prior to the Vancouver games... and then, became a huge fan in 2011 of course, when he first won worlds.... this meant that we went through the goods and evils ;) in other words, Patrick would win but many people were not happy... etc... then we lived through the 2014 games... which was sad.... just incredibly sad. I was proud of Patrick for his two silvers but I felt that the team competition was a lost cause from the start anyways, and well, I was terribly disappointed that Patrick lost his dream gold in the singles, to someone who had fallen as well. It was a few points difference too...I think that perhaps, the build up with his stellar performance at TEB just before the games may have caused more disappointment..

However, here is where I am coming from : you became a fan of Patrick at Skate Canada 2015 ? With his comeback stellar winning skate. Can you tell us more about it ? What made you a fan now? Where you not following figure skating before or just casually? Were you preferring other skaters (don't worry, it's allowed!!!! LOL)

One sure thing : be relieved you didn't have to suffer the anti Patrick mob on GS... apparently, they have quieted down a lot.... Even myself, I haven't really suffered too much despite my username.... People have calmed down after seeing his gorgeous Chopin this year....

See :) I reversed the roles... we are interviewing you here :)

PS I did read what you wrote about yourself and the Elegy... I am just wondering if you would care to share more with us here ;)

4everchan I think you need to read this page. But an interview is a good idea. :)

I became a Patrick fan in October 2015.

I'll tell you a little secret. I also fell in love patrick´s skating at that time.

I see FS for years and although I know he is a wonderful skater, he never excited me, until TEB 2013.
Thats competition made me change my opinion of him but by that time, I did not have favorite skaters. I liked Yuzuru, Javier and many more but none had my absolute devotion.

The Olympics were disappointing for me. I do not like dance, in pair, I like all but I'm an absolute fan of Aliona&Robin, so when they only got the bronze, my heart broke.

Ladies was a sad competition, not too good skating, except ice beauty of Carolina and magnificent FS of Mao .

Men,my favorite category, was particularly disappointing.I do not like Ten and he won a bronze because Javi jumped more. And Patrick and Yuzuru medals were weird. They were not the best skater, only " least bad".

When Patrick retired, I did not feel happy or sad. Unfortunately canadian skaters do not have much echo in forums like the russians, japanese and american, so I was hoping to see him only in japanese shows.

When he announced his return, I did not believe him too much, because many skaters said the same but do not return (weir, Lysacek, plushenko..ect) but I was excited because it could make the men category was more interesting.

And Suddenly, without too many expectations and being absolute fan of Hanyu, I ended up crying watching mack the knife and wondered me what changed in his skating because now i liked.

And this is my short history with patrick
PS:Sorry for my baaaaaaaaaaad english XD

THANKS for sharing Calica. Your English is fine! What I find most interesting is that you fell in love with Mack the Knife. I thought most newer fans would have got there because of Chopin. However, I see your point because Patrick showed a different side of himself with Mack the Knife. He is more open and communicative I'd say, probably because he was doing shows for so long before coming back.

I have had many favourite programs of Patrick.... MTK is not one of them because I like other musical versions of it, this one is too happy haha... but I am glad it charmed you and that you are now cheering for him with us here !!!! Maybe it's time you ask him again how his 4S is working ? He answered you :) hehe

I fell in love with Chopin but Mack the knife was a shock to me, because I did not think that his return would thrill me ... and when he finished his sp, he was very happy and I cried from the shock.

What is this, 4everchan? You're asking moi the questions? :eeking:

Actually, I became Patrick's fan about two weeks before SC 2015. Going into SC15 I was more concerned about how a rematch with Hanyu might affect his spirits (after his Olympic heartbreak), and even though I was shocked and thrilled with his winning Chopin performance, we now know that he was crying from stress right before that skate.

I was a skating fan in the 1990s (when Patrick was a kid), but then my interest waned and life took over, so I had no interest in the sport until last year as I said, when I became interested again in the strangest way.

Throughout the past season I did get a vague sense that there were a lot of people who disliked Patrick, and I thought it was a shame that some of the opinions were so fixed against him as to be unchangeable. Currently due to time and energy constraints I only focus on Patrick, but there are no skaters that I hate or have a fixed bad opinion of. But I think the turning point here on GS was when he won Four Continents. Remember that interesting conversation in the 4CC thread?

Patrick has said that he is a different person and a different skater now than before, and I believe him. I think his year off did him good, and the re-learning experience did him good. Despite his fear that he didn't belong in the top echelons of figure skating anymore, he proved that his is still top talent this past year.

Still, I wondered besides us, where the bulk of his fans were? Before I started my site, it amazed me that there was no full fan site out there for him. There's an instagram fan page, a defunct Tumblr fan page, and various skating forum threads, but that's it. I used to visit Heather W's Michelle Kwan Fan Page a lot in the 90s and 2000s and her site inspired the title for mine. Of course she was a much more involved fan who went to a lot of Michelle's events, whereas I am admiring Patrick from afar (and spending $$ on high quality photos of him rather than on his events). Still, I do the best that I can, and that's why I interview those of you who have met him in person, like Happylife. :agree:

As far as Elegy goes, it was a piece of music that I loved as soon as I heard it. When I look through Patrick's older programs, much of the music that he skates to is music I like and resonate with. The only exceptions are MTK (sorry, Calica) and Mess Is Mine. But then I understand that one of the goals of his comeback was to expand his repertoire and become a more versatile skater. That's why I hope to see him skate to hip hop and K-pop soon!

Hope that satisfies your curiosity, 4everchan. I'll be asking you for that music blog post after we see Patrick's new FS in competition. ;)

Awesome, Calica! We're in the same class of Patrick fans, then! You're English is fine, no need to apologize. I didn't know that you were a fan of Hanyu, either. Patrick has continued to grow as a person and as a skater, and I think in the next two seasons he will become even more popular.

I would be interested to get your take on why Canadian skaters don't get as much publicity or discussion on your forum(s). Always interesting to get another viewpoint!

vivley and 4everchan, please have a look at the first post of this thread and suggest any changes or corrections that you think we need?

(The first post of each fan fest functions as GS's version of a fan page for the skater to whom the thread is dedicated...in this case Patrick :)

Hi Doris,

Wow.. that's a lot of data ;) I would maybe ? add that he is a double silver medallist in Sochi (team event) and perhaps mention that he is a 3 time 4CC Champion, which for many was the competitive highlight of his comeback year. I am not familiar with the style of fan fest OP but maybe I would mention that Patrick was, in 2013, the world record holder for highest scores.

BUt yeah... WOW... lots of work went into this. I cannot imagine how much gets done considering how many fan fests there are... THANKS

Thanks, Doris! I will check when I have the chance and let you know.

All, here's my interview with Bea, the fan who waved that banner, "The CHANpion Is Back" at 4CC!

http://bit.ly/chanpionfan

Her story is so cute, and like Krunchii, she was a brave one!

Enjoy your interview with Bea so much. In my experience I know there is a feeling of excitement to Bea when she met Patrick in person. ;)

I have seen "The Chanpion is back" banner many times(on YouTube and TV), I love it! It's interesting to know the story of the banner(from developing idea to finished product). Thumbs up to Bea and her friends.

Vivley, just for curiosity, my guess is that you have never known Bea before the 2016 4CC in Taipei. I'm wondering how do you know Bea created the banner and how can you able to contact her for your interview? I would be very geartedly if you could give me some information. It is fine for me if you don't feel comfortable to answer my questions.

Thanks, guys. 4everchan, I added his team medal and 4CCs medals.

I have not added the World record info, because it is not a category I keep up with, because it is never apples to apples in skating. Different rules year to year, and always different judge and tech panels.

Still, Patrick's 2013 scores were a great achievement...

Hi Happylife,

Thank you for reading! :) Bea and I follow each other on Twitter. You can see her photo with Patrick pinned at the top of her Twitter profile. She is also a figure skating blogger of You Only Lutz Once. I also have links at the bottom of my article to both her and Clara's blog posts about their experiences being at 4CC and meeting Patrick.

My fellow fans,

If you want to be interviewed or know of someone that you think I should interview, please let me know and I'll be happy to contact them!

I honestly do not know, I think there are many factors, at least for me.

-On the one hand the American and Russian forums are very broad, so often speak much about russian and american skaters.

Individual skaters has more followers than dance and pairs, so russians and Japanese skater have more support. (girls in russia and men in japan, now)

I think also influenced by the fact that most quality and televised shows are russian or japanese. If you check youtube, most good quality videos are of shows in Asia, not American or Canadian tour.

And in the case of Patrick, also it influences he is not very prolific on the Internet. He do not use twitter, instagram for personal advantage and if you dont get photos or info about your favorite skater is difficult for a casual fan to appreciate him off the ice.

That, and unfortunately he usually don´t go to Europe ... Megan and Eric u have ever been in shows to Switzerland or Germany, but i don´t remember that Patrick come here if not for a competition.

Thank you very much for the answers. I should get started to learn more about Twitter. ;)
