OK, I know I could google it, but I don't care enough to do that ...

Who or what is "Big Bad Voodoo Daddy" and why do skaters, particularly ice dancers, love them so?

So no other leaders except Chock/Bates revealed their music choices for the season? Seems like I didn't miss that much.

The Shibutanis revealed that their SD would include Frank Sinatra's "That's Life" but it's not clear if that's just part of the SD or the whole thing.

Oh, right. Totally forgot about them. I think it was also rumoured that they'll do Swing, right?

Edit: Hmmm... I think I don't remember things too well, it probably was someone else..

I actually read more hints of them going for hip hop. We know Hubbell Donohue will do an evolution of the dances for their SD with 'Don't touch this' from MC Hammer as their 80's piece. As for P/C, they've chosen swing probably with a hint of lindy hop for their SD.

The biggest summer ice dance news is that Penny Coomes has a serious knee injury. Also Testa & Csolley have split (along with half the second-tier Canadian dance field). Nazarova & Nikitin are reported to have switched to Shpilband. All three Junior World medal teams are competing as juniors on the JGP.

Oh, thank you. Really appreciate your post.
What a shame about Testa/Csolley. I finally started to like them. And Penny :(

Nathan Chen:

Short program: Music from Le Corsaire by Adolphe Adam
Free program: “Polovtsian Dances” (from Prince Igor) by Alexander Borodin
Choreographers: Marina Zoueva (SP), Nadia Kanaeva (FP)

I love both pieces of music, but I don't know if I necessarily think Nathan can pull them off...maybe he will surprise me.

I'm pleasantly surprised by the music choice because I kind of expected him to skate to another pop music pieces. However, the choice is interesting because both pieces are rather performed by female skaters. Given by his natural musicality, I think he will do good with the music.

Last season Michal Brezina was skating to Le Corsaire in his FP. In his red costume :drama:

Yes, how can I forget his red costume comprised of the embroidered vest and pants....I mean female skaters more frequently use the music although the ballet piece is no way considered war horse music. :)

EDIT: I just searched clips of the ballet on YouTube, and this clip performed by a young Mexican ballerino is intriguing.
Would this costume approach be too much for Nathan? I realize the ballet piece seems to have a lot of dynamic scenery though.

Yeah, and Alexander Abt skated to Polovtsian Dances...never associated either piece with female skaters, to be honest.

That perception may be just for me. Rika Hongo and some several ladies juniors used Le Corsaire. As for Plovtsian Dance, Gabby Daleman, Yuka Nagai, Haruka Imai and Ashley Wagner used that. Except Abt, I can't recall male skaters perform to the music from Prince Igor.

I associate Polovtsian Dances with dance teams. Davis & White made a big splash with it early in their career--2005-2006. Igor passed it on to Tobias & Tkachenko last season. (I've heard this piece enough to not be very excited with this choice).

I like the idea of Le Corsaire for Nathan.

I knew dance ubers would love to talk about Polovtsian Dances. :) Igor Shpilband picked Prince Igor..just pun. Personally, I wish Liza T. uses the music someday because I love the music and have thought the music fits her personality very well.

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to Nathan's interpretation on the music pieces.

A contemporary swing band.

Contemporary + swing. During a season in which swing is one of the two optional rhythms in the short dance. Hence the appeal for ice dancers in 2016.

Okey dokey now I get it. Because we can't expect teenagers or folks in their twenties to actually use like real, original swing, from like the 20s or 30s. Sigh.

But this cover band could be great, I wouldn't know, so we will see....
