2016-2017 State of U.S. Men Figure Skating

You are right. He is 2 class above :agree:

OS, This is simply not true. I have seen Jeremy skate in person and he's truly a gifted skater. However, 2 classes above Jason He is not! In fact, with all that Jeremy has accomplished, as a competitor on the World Stage, I'd place him behind Jason Brown and Joshua Farris. Jeremey has moments of sheer brilliance and I think his performances at Nationals in 2014 were as good as any Man from the US has ever been. It's his head that worries me. However, if he earns a spot, then more power to him. How old is Jeremy, he must be 30 or very close to it.

Thanks Chuckm. Here's my recommendation for Jeremy. Give Brian Orser a call and ask him how fulfilling life as coach can be. When I stopped touring and performing professionally, I honestly worried that I'd never have the same feeling of exhilaration that I felt when I was on stage as the featured performer. That quickly changed when I discovered that seeing the light in the eyes of someone who I'd helped reach their dreams, made me feel even better than when did it myself. Maybe he feels unfulfilled. I just hope he's prepared to deal with it if he finishes 9th. Maybe he should talk to Katarina Witt. She made that comeback and didn't win anything......Except the hearts of the fans. If he comes back for love........I say, go for it.

To me, the point of the article is that Jeremy is keeping the door open ...which is fine by me. No harm, no foul.

Meryl and Charlie also are still keeping the door open ... which is fine by me as well.

Will we see any of them competing in 2017-18? I dunno. But stranger things have happened.

There are many schools of though. The best should win and there should be no limits. Its their perrogative to keep doors open. It make skating fresh and fascinating.

Another school of thought is it is time to let other people have a chance; you've had your shot now move on- stop being so greedy.

If they come back fine I suppose but I hope they have to pay their dues like Patrick Chan. It seems like it is easier to come back from ice dancing than singles skating. I personally would like both of them to do show; I think they both are truly show skaters and not my faves as to olympic eligible but they really are wonderfulprosskaters. Meryl could be every single princess. and Charlie her prince charming.

mrrice I think Jeremy would be thrilled if he finished 9th at the olympics because he will find it tough just to make it out of the States. For some reason I do not see it a win if he place 4th at Nationals and misses worlds and olympics. Unlike Elaine Zayak that was a triumph in 1994. Maybe Jeremy Abbott is like the more successful version of Emanuel Sandu - unfulfilled dreams and promise.

I think we'll see more of a PCS gap emerge between Adam and Jason as the season progresses (unless Adam puts together stellar performances on the GP...) because judges love Jason. Right now, Adam is just getting a bit of a "we haven't forgotten how awesome you were at Worlds" bonus. I'm interested to see what kind of PCS Nathan Chen receives internationally. His skating skills aren't all there, but they're by no means bad. If he's healthy and relatively consistent this season, it would be a crime not to send him to Worlds.

I really hope Adam, Max, nathan et all give Jason a run. I am still not sold on Jason. He has been very kindly treated by the judges and fans but I do not feel his skating skills are of the top level and wish eh would not be so generously gifted. That being said, I think thejudges will reward him a world and olympic spot somehow and someway.

You want Max, Adam and Nathan to challenge Jason because their SS are better than his? Or what? I think Jason's PCS makes sense if you remember that skating skills only comprise one PCS mark out of 5. Jason's SS marks are not particularly high - and they're not even close to the SS marks for Hanyu and Chan:

2015 Worlds: Jason SP/FS 7.96/8.29; Hanyu 9.14/8.93
2015 WTT: Jason SP/FS 8.29/8.57; Hanyu 9.25/9.39
2015 Skate America: SP/FS Jason 8.39/8.36, Shoma 7.96/8.43, D10 8.46/8.04
2016 Worlds: Jason -- Adam SP/FS 8.32/8.43, Hanyu 9.89/9.29, Chan 9.57/9.36
2016 Lombardia: Jason SP/FS 8.20/8.35, Shoma 8.45/8.55
2016 SLC: Jason SP/FS 8.40/8.35, Adam 8.40/8.20, Mura 7.60/8.10

Jason and I have a special relationship....He just doesn't know about it. I have seen Jason almost as many times as I've seen Joshua Farris and I've seen Joshua more than other skater. Now that he's retired, Jason will be the one the I've seen the most. Here's the thing about Jason. He's like the Sarah Huges of the US Men. He is a rock mentally. The ONLY thing that kept him from beating Joshua was his lack of difficulty. He's a beautiful performer and his dance skills are better than all of the current US men.

IMO, It really depends on the Panel. Jason was noticeably slower than Joshua and "back then" his edges were quite shallow compared to Joshua and Shotaro Omori. My money is still on Max Arron. He has continued to improve and his transformation last season was epic. The US Men are so deep this season that it really is difficult to predict who will make the team. I haven't even mentioned Ross, Grant, Nathan, Adam,Timothy D., Alex Johnson, or any of the strong Juniors we have right now. The US is Deep with talent on men's side.

Abbott won GPF once, but mostly he showed his best skating at U.S. Nationals... I would be happy to see his skating again!

I’m impressed that Jeremy still practices like an active competitor. Curious to see how he and Adam fare at Japan Open against Uno, Oda, Fernandez and Amodio. How great for them being invited to such a popular event. Hope I find a way to watch - checking the Japan Open thread.

Sorry for being greedy; I want to see Jeremy compete

I have always said that Jeremy skates with his head and not his feet. He is a beautiful skater but he is not a good competitor on the international scene. If he comes back and if he gets out of Nationals - more power to him. Unfortunately I fear that is just one medal the US won't get at Worlds or anywhere else offshore.

You can say that about anyone, but you just never know. We have seen it with Wagner, Tuk. Even Kostner herself is a great example. Those who don't give up and have something to proof will always surprise you ...never count them out. They are potential unfulfilled, and with experience of failing actually makes them stronger competitors than those who have not. Do you think Mao's fs at Sochi will happen had the short not happened? You just never know. I have never seen her go out attack her program like that as if her last skate ever, even just to proof to herself and ease her mind. It was awesome.... love to see Jeremy do something like that in his next outing. Totally inspirational....

FWIW, Kori Ade has no qualms about Jeremy (and Evgeni Plushenko) coming back to competition, per this video she did with TSL. "Come on back and show us what you got!"

She also states that Grant Hochstein's skates at Nebelhorn were the highlight of last week's skating comps for her.

He had that skate at 2014 Worlds. I don't think he can do anything more that he did there. But I'm not saying he shouldn't try

I think that if Jeremy wants to come back for the love of skating, for one last big good bye at nationals, much like Rachael Flattdid,... I think that would be wonderful. It would be his 10th nationals, and I would love to see him skate for himself, not for the podium. The problem is, I am not sure Jeremy is there yet. I think he still wants his glory - and don't fault him for it. I don't know if Jeremy can skate at nationals and be ok with not medaling.

Sadly what i can see happening is him coming into nationals with his head in a good place and doing really well... maybe even wining. But then what happens? If we have a 3 person team and he wins silver (which is the only medal he does not have)... do we send Jeremy to the Olympics again? I think he would have to skate somewhere to get minimum TES. My fear is that Jeremy will likely do very well at Nationals, but I don't think that will be good enough for him. I think if he does well, he will want to go to Olympics/Worlds. And i am not sure i want to send someone who has not at least done one competition that season prior to nationals. I am not sure I want to send someone to the Olympics who just shows up at Nationals.

So if Jeremy thinks he wants to do post season stuff if he does well at Nationals, I think he should skate in the fall. I think skipping the GP and doing a couple of Challenger/Senior Bs would be fine, but if he wants to be considered for World/Olympic teams, i think he would put in the face time prior to Nationals.

As for his coming back in general. Well can he do so and not be in pain? If the answer is yes, then i am all for it. But at Jeremy's age, I think he needs to focus on being pain free, both physical and metal pain, more than coming back to skating.
If his time off has let his body heal, and his body can take it without screaming for mercy, then I like the idea of him coming back. I don't like the idea of pain filled comebacks... especially at his age.

Hey, I'm not saying he shouldn't come back if that's what he wants. It's just that year after year after year I've rooted for him to have a good skate and have been disappointed so many times.

I hope Jeremy does well at the Japan Open this weekend, so we'll see how he's holding up. I'm all for him trying again for the Olympics if he wants to, but I think it's an uphill climb.

I absolutely love Kori Ade. She seems to be one of the nicest and most intelligent coaches out there. I have seen her several times at events and she's always smiling. Her students seem to be very level headed and smart. During the 2012/2013 season when Josh and Jason were neck and neck, she always had a "May the best skater win" attitude. She never seemed upset or bitter when Jason would lose to Joshua and back then, it happened all the time. I really have a ton of respect for her and Rohene. I haven't seen the interview but, does she talk about Mariah Bells exit and move to Raf?

Wait, What?? Jeremy is skating this weekend? In competition? How is that possible when he hasn't skated in 2 years. Did he get a host invite?
