Patrick Chan

"Loin Queen" :cool2: :hap57:

Another phenomenal PhotoChan design from Blueberryhill :hap10: and Thanks :thank:
Sounds like you had an exciting weekend. :) Too bad your phone died on you. I laughed so hard at your "zamboni" comment  and I would have loved more of those zingers from the event. Next time bring a power bank recharger with you so that you can juice up your phone on the go! :)

ps: From now on we should refer to happylife as The Loin Queen! :laugh2:

happylife, go lurk on the men fp post of mine in autumn classic.. loin king is mentioned there :) and you've been credited for the now infamous typo LOL, typo which has made dozens of people laugh...

I saw this photo again and wondered just how much time has Patrick spent on land? We need a post with various photos of Chiddy suspended in the air.

Patrick spends more time in my heart than on land...

OKay.... that was corny... oh wait ;) license plate ;) :laugh2:

I wish I can find a photo I linked a few years ago, with very dramatic lighting and Patrick flying a mile high above the ice. I believe it was from the ATS in Korea. It was taken at just the right moment when he did the flying camel into a spin. Fabulous picture.

Hi all,

Since a general Canadian fest is seemingly not in the offing, I'm going to go a smidgen off topic....

Is anyone else with me in hoping that Skate Canada is having some meetings today reviewing international assignments for men?

Now that Kevin Reynolds and Keegan Messing have achieved the minimum ISU TES for both SP and FS this past weekend, I'm hoping that they can add them to some of the Grand Prix events where Canada hasn't filled all its slots. The Trophee de France has no Canadian men assigned for example. I'm hoping that they still could do this....

In terms of our Patrick, I think that we can all agree that even if it means a stronger deeper field of competition at nationals, all of our men will benefit if we can have our second ranked man get the strength on strength competition to be ready to do better at Worlds 2017 and secure a third men's slot for the 2018 Olympics.

I thought Mango asked about Canadian skaters thread? I guess we will just have to start one in the edge, not a fan fest but a

State of Canadian skating 2016-17 (all disciplines). (I won't start it because I don't know where things stand with Mango's request and there's already a ladies thread).

You are correct though that it seems that Canada has 5 men now in the elite : Patrick of course, Keegan and Kevin doing well in senior B reaching their TES minimums and of course, Nam and Elladj both had GP assignments. Let's not forget Liam as well since he has the opportunity to better his scores at Skate Canada. Bennet impressed me this weekend as well. I think that's great for Canada! and I agree it's great for Patrick to see that there are some guys pushing behind ;)

I hope the best two guys go to the WC and do indeed place well enough to secure 3 spots for the games.

TGee, only the host federation of a GP has the power to invite skaters (from any country) to its GP.
And no country automatically is entitled to any slots at any GP -- with the exception that the host fed is entitled to three slots per discipline at its own GP.

In other words, Skate Canada does not "own" (my word) any slots at any GP except at Skate Canada International.
Skate Canada cannot assign Kevin or Keegan (or any other Team Canada skater) to any GP except Skate Canada International.

At this point, the only GP with a TBD slot for men is at Rostelecom.
It is up to the Russian fed to decide who will fill the slot. No other fed will have a say in the decision.

Except for Rostelecom, the rosters for the other GPs already have the maximum of twelve men.

For any other TBD slot to open up, someone would have to withdraw. And again, it would be the host fed who decides who would fill any future TBD slot.

And then the host generally goes by world ranking for invitation, including the limitation of top seeds, i.e. no 2 skaters from #1 - #3 and no two from #4 -#8.

Canadian skaters have good chances at SC as replacements in case of withdrawal by other Canadians.

I 'm very happy that Patrick gets to skate at COC for a change due to the different scheduling of events this year. He never skated there because it was always back to back with SC and so far away. Chan vs Hanyu will be exciting at SC but, before that, we have Finlandia coming up. :hap36: New programs, new costumes. :hap36:

this being said, i looked at the finlandia thread in the competition area... there's nothing yet.... it probably will be clarified closer to the event.
I will most likely miss the whole thing. I am going away for a show during the weekend. Seems like everytime Patrick is performing this year I am too :( makes it hard for our relationship

Thanks ice coverage. . .

I am am aware of switchouts and additions by Skate Canada in JPG assignments as the season develops and was hoping to see some of the same flexibility for seniors. Appreciate the reminder that the 12 competitor limit really is the issue.

But then the question is whether to assign Kevin and Keegan each to an additional Challenger event. I believe that is within Skate Canada's decision set. They can attend a maximum of 3, but no more than 2 in either the Challenger or GP series.

....They can attend a maximum of 3, but no more than 2 in either the Challenger or GP series.

I think you are saying that Skate Canada sets this rule for its skaters?

The ISU rules would allow Kevin or Keegan or any skater to compete in up to three Challengers (regardless of GP assignments).
Then scores from the skater's best two Challengers are used for the overall Challenger Series rankings.

GP events are quite prestigious, basically reserved for the World's top ranked skaters. The GPF is pretty much like the last group of World Championships. Chan vs Hanyu would be a rare happening at a GP event as both were top seeds, but now possible for two seasons due to Patrick's loss of ranking points during his time off and a not so great comeback season, and that fact that Hanyu trains in Canada. They were head to head at 2013 SC as well. As it is, Patrick at COC is actually a rarer event.

Europeans tends to be over-ranked because of the number of B events, now called Challenger Series, in Europe where traveling for competitions is easy. At least there are now additional such events in N.A. for other skaters to get experience and points to increase their chances for bigger events. The Asians are still at a disadvantage with fewer events and more challenging travels.

eta. Patrick has dominated SC since 2008, beating Hanyu both times that they met. Patrick finished at 2nd to Jave in 2012 and was #6 in 2009 when he had the worst performance ever in his competitive career. That was his come back from injury. He won in 2008, 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2015.

Go Patrick! Slay the dragon one by one!

Last time that I looked through everything was a couple of years back and the situation was for Juniors, and Skate Canada's international assignment policy is a moving target at present it appears, but my understanding was no more than three in total, not including GP or JPG finals, 4Cs or Worlds.

But it would be great for Kevin to get a chance at another Challenge event medal, and a chance at an overall medal. And for Keegan to get out there again before nationals.

Skate Canada hasn't looked at this series in this way it seems, but one can pose the question where else to get the strength on strength competition opportunities for national team members in order to deepen our field?
