2016-17 State of Russian Ladies skating

So according to some posters here, Pogorilaya had a great season, while she did not manage to medal at either of her GP events and at one scoring even 164. She obviously did not get to GPF.

And Radionova had an average season when she medalled at every event she entered except of worlds. No matter she did get to GPF and medalled there... Her lowest score from the season was 184.

Radionova beat Pogorilaya at three out of four competitions they competed against each other. One GP event, Russian nationals and Europeans. Whereas Pogorilaya beat Radionova only at worlds.

I would say that either both ladies had pretty good season, or Elena had better season than Anna and if Elena's season is called average, I am dreading to think what Anna's season would be.

Yeah, that's funny how some people perceive good or bad season by "one" competition, that is Worlds. A "Season" isn't defined by Worlds only. Anna definitely didn't have a good season overall, she had very bad first half of season (the NHK Trophy :hopelessness: ) and then good second half (managed to get on Team, medalled in Europeans and Worlds). While Elena had only one not so good competition: Worlds, but overall she had a good season both in home and international competitions. I'd like to remind how many GS users were saying that Anna, even after medalling at Euros, doesn't deserve going to Worlds, and it was all based on her results from season (which in their minds were super bad, even though she was still better than alternatives and she earned the spot, some were giving it to Liza based on her year before results... :rolleye:). And suddenly she had a great season! :noshake: The memory of some is really short....

Well, of Anna and a good season - yeah, she is not consistent. Still, she had ups and downs - when you speak of the first half, you forget Mordovian Ornament, for example. Then, she did well at Russian Nationals, and then at Worlds. Also, she showed improvement from the previous season, with less nasty falls and all, and also a better overall skating.
Somehow, it feels like she is going up the ranks.
Improvement is a big factor imho as Russia has a few talented ladies growing up, so if a skater just stays still...

Elena, on the other hand, also had ups and downs (her CoC was not so much better than Anna´s NHK). But her season was worse than previous, when she was a solid second after Liza, and she didn´t show much improvement, probably because of the growth spurt. Whatever the reason is, we are yet to see how it goes for her, and we have no base to predict she will manage to stay in top.

I see it basically like this =) Said that, I love Elena, and I was one of the people who said Anna should be still sent to worlds despite europeans performance =)

Well, I love Anna :) And I was outraged at those wanted to send Liza instead, but I'm not blind to not see she had bad performances. But you're right, she did well at Mordovian Ornament! I totally forgot about it. The only thing that makes Anna season better than Elena is fact, that she managed to peak and get it together at the most important competition, unlike Elena (who instead qualified to GPF). And yes, she's improving, although I liked her skating from the beginning :luv17:

Yeah Liza or Yulia or whoever.
I don´t think thats right, punishing a skater for not doing well at one single competition.

My power ranking of Russian senior ladies based on what I have seen so far this season - relative rank in Russia, relative rank in the world, expected score in key competitions:

Medvedeva 1 1 220-225
Pogorilaya 2 2-5 210-215
Tuktamysheva 3 6-10 190-205
Sotskova 4 6-10 190-205
Lipnitskaya 5 11-15 180-190
Sakhanovich 6 15-20 170-180
Leonova 7 15-20 170-180
Radionova ? ? 160-210

Why did you put ?? at Elena? I think she's in any condition better than Yulia and of course than Sima and Alena. And I'm sure she's better than Liza. She is exactly one of the four best figure skaters in Russia now with Evgenia, Anna and Maria. I don't like that many people are drawing conclusions of Elena's readiness based on open skates, where she was sick. And you forgot Adelina.

My ranking:
Medvedeva 1 1 220-225
Pogorilaya 2-3 2-5 205-215
Radionova 2-3 2-5 205-215
Sotskova 4 6-10 200-210
Tuktamysheva 5 6-10 185-200
Sotnikova 6 8-12 170-185
Lipnitskaya 7-9 11-20 165-180
Sakhanovich 7-9 11-20 165-180
Leonova 7-9 11-20 165-180

I put ? because I have not seen her skate well this season. That's why the suggested score range is 160-210. I don't think it makes sense to put more than 210 now as her all time best is 211. But if some gossips are true and she is hit hard by puberty now 160-170 scores may be possible. I do believe though she will overcome the issues. I did not appreciate her skating as a junior but last season she grew on me as a skater (leider not as a jumper). This year SP also shows good promise.

All other girls I saw and my ranking is based on what I saw. I wish Yulia were much higher than that. Let's see.

I just wonder why you suddenly expect her to score 160 when last season her lowest score was 184 and that was at one competition, all her other results were over 200!

Evgenia Medvedeva
Anna Pogorilaya
Maria Sotskova

Next year it's going to Be
Polina Tsurkaskaya
Evgenia Medvedeva
Maria Sotskova

Only because the peak of her puberty might have happened this summer and may be still on. She grew tall and then she started to add some weight - it was sort of visible in Sochi. But again, it's all speculation - that's why I put a ceiling of 210 thinking that during the season she can be there.

WOW~~ I am speechless. Is this a regular kid doing figure skating training caught on video or a kid on a national reserve team?
I really admire her self-discipline, and it motives me to do more exercise myself.
I think regular kid. She's not even in fskate base and name of her coach tells me nothing.

I've posted these elsewhere, but, come to think, they are appropriate here too - recent interviews with:

Anna
http://fs-gossips.com/anna-pogorilaya-there-are-only-you-and-program/

Very insightful interview! especially the making of her free program (three ideas very well blended together) and the relationship with her coach.

I can safely say that her free program is my favourite free program among the ladies from what i've seen so far (waiting for Lena's FS)
