Figure Skating Anime

Hello everyone.

Now that I know there is a Jason character (evidently the show's twitter feed has posted a shot of "Leo" next to Jason), maybe I need to watch an episode, but I have a way more general question, and I'm sorry I can't scroll through 31 screens to find my answer ...

My youngest niece *loooves* anime. Goes to conventions with mild cosplay. Way into it.

I know NOTHING about anime. I couldn't tell you what kind she likes, what she watches (other than it's not adult), what the names of the programs are, etc.

Will she need to like figure skating to like this anime? I have tried to get her interested in FS, but she cares as much about skating as I do about anime. So will this be a good intro?

Please be honest and try to ignore, for the moment, our love of skating. Will it be worthwhile? Or do you need to know at least who Yuzu is?

If she watches any, and I mean ANY other "sport anime" (just ask her, she will understand), she will love it.

If she loves anime? She will love it.

If she doesn't know the first thing about figure skating? She will love it AND it might be a great introduction to the figure skating world IRL.

She really doesn't need to know any current figure skater. Yuuri is not based on ONE particular skater, he's got traits of quite a few, and he's got traits of his own. Just like all the other skaters. None of them are entirely based on one figure skater or another.

But yeah if she already likes anime, chances are high she'll love it.

Go for it :hap10:

I would say don't start with the most recent two episodes. But other than that I would say it is pretty general audiences. The last two episodes (six and seven) have been the short and long of a comp and is at least 50% animated skating. So don't start there. The vast majority is rather general audience. I was watching the dubbed version last week and noticed my better half watching it out of the corner of his eye far more than he wanted to admit it.... the ask last night "so ummm when do the dubbed version come out?" so I think he actually wants to watch more.

But you should watch episode six for sure... profile shot of "Jason's" coach is very Rohene. But from the front they are more feminine and the voice is feminine. I actually think that Leo's coach is an amalgamation of Kori and Rohene which is just awesome.

A recent tweet from Yuri on Ice confirms a Rohene/female coach:

Bing translation:
Coach Leo Leo model, Jason's coach is not or. The match except for sex. That actually match the sex allegations, or not.

I've only caught the last two episodes with Leo/Jason and loved them. I really need to catch up on earlier episodes.

Evgenia Medvedeva is such a hoot!

Yes, definitely go for it as others have said. If she's young, she's a shipper and there's a huge community on Tumblr already to suck her in. She doesn't need to know anything really, the show itself introduces a lot and you can explain the rest. A lot of the fans have expressed interest in skating itself, I've seen quite a few actually asking about the GP and where to watch so that may be another good indicator that it can introduce her to skating in a very fun way. I think she'll love it :)

BTW I'd give the whole show a chance if I were you, you yourself may end up liking it too, but if not, then definitely go with both this episode and the previous one too, as one whole.

a clear sign that this is fiction.

so just like in reality.

.....wait :roll9:

So the whole rest of the internet goes
"OMG THEY KISSED OMGOMGOMGOMG!!!11!!1!!!"
and GS goes
"omg they kissed but whAT ABOUT THE SCORES WHERE ARE THE PROTOCOLS???!!?!?11?!?1?!?.... and also where can I get that borscht recipe?"
 I love this place

No kidding, I went through tumblr and another site reactions and the difference between GS and the rest of the internet is hilarious:

Internet: omg they kiseed!
GS: but how did Yuri lose 20 point advantage over Pitchit when he had 3 quads?
Internet: Phichit's such a troll
GS: why Thailand if he was based on Michael Christian Martinez?
Internet: Giacometti's a$$ got all the animation budget
GS: but how was he fifth with that content?
Internet: cool music
GS: the presentation wasn't so different, what were the PCS?
Internet: they slept in one bed, so cute
GS: they had an Audi like in the real CoC!
Internet: Georgi's so emo Evanescence should Wake Him Up, also Elsa
GS: but how did he drop to fourth???
Internet: Is Yuri's ex-coach kind of a villain now?
GS: Is Yuri's ex-coach Camerlengo?
Internet: we want Yurio back
GS: *GP math* they both should get into the GPF
Internet: Young Victor is the most beautiful anime character ever
GS: Johnny Weir!
Internet: pretty!
GS: I think that was 3A-1lo-3F combo
Internet: lolz
GS: PROTOCOLS!!!!

:laugh::laugh::laugh: so true

a little late to the party here, but damn i missed a lot here on GS while drowning in the tumblr fandom  it's so good to go nuts over this anime with other skating fans

Am I the only one who thinks Guang Hong Ji is modeled after Li Zijun and maybe Shoma (that free skate costume)?
 Yuri on Ice twitter follows Zijun.

This episode is much better. I need to remember not to eat or drink while watching this. Even the little, trivial scene like Yuri pulls out chunks of white tissue out of what looks exactly like Victor's poodle makes me giggle.
Yuri J's movement is really beautiful.

So yes, as an anime fan i think it would be very worth the try. Myself i took an interest in swimming thanks to Free! although i sink like an anchor (but i managed to learn how to propel myself on the water so yes, i guess it was good :D)

Ha, the beauty of sport anime. I quit swimming years ago but thanks to Free, I'll take it up again. Now I desperately want an anime on synchro swimiming.
For me, whenever the question "Do I need to know XYZ in order to watch this show?", the answer will always be no. If you need to be knowledgeable about XYZ, then the creators are not doing a good job of story telling. Yuri on Ice is by no means great, but the production team obviously did their homework.

It's so funny GS is getting workep up over anime competition results haha but really, Yuri was robbed!
Phichit did only one type of quad and have you noticed his weird 3 jump combo of 3F-1Lo-2F ! what the heck just do a 3F-2T-2T or something:palmf: or 3F-1Lo-3F would've been much cooler
Yuri doing 4F as the last jumping pass was extremely unrealistic lol few people even dare to attempt 4T in the second half :) and why is pervert Stephane Lambiel landing quad lutz! it should be the chinese kid's jump because Boyang JIn lol
oh and Yuri's nervousness and crying scene was so realistic I thought i was watching myself and I cried along with him :sad4:

and why no one does 3A-3T or even 3A-2T it's always 3A-1Lo-3S:sarcasm: why no tano or rippon jumps and no different spin positions? it would be nice if they take the chance and show exciting and even impossible moves since it's fantasy :P

even Fairy tail's this segment shows amost more variety of skating elements

Do you know what this anjme needs to be realistic? At least 1 competition that's an absolute mess and everybody is a trainwreck.

i think they do the 3A-1Lo-3S cuz it's yuzuru's thing in his FS - maybe they just pick that combo by default?

also considering they have to create new skating sequences every week (especially for the CoC episodes, that's like what 5 new programs every week?), i think they kind of have to reuse key frames just to cut down on the workload :scratch2: it's unfortunate, but that's how the anime industry is

I love that poodle tissue box! And I love the way Victor's poodle looks -- exactly like the last poodle I owned (I'm a poodle person) except Victor's is a standard and mine was a miniature. They are such an amazing breed but, sadly, so often depicted as prissy dogs with ugly show haircuts. But Victor's poodle has the fluffy puppy cut with the all-important full mustache, which completely changes the look of the breed. :luv17:

Yuri's a cutie too. ;)
