2016-2017 State of Canadian Figure Skating

Absolutely don't want to start a cross thread discussion, but do want to observe that there is something darn odd about how Canadians don't seem to expect much from our women in singles...

I was grumbling about the lack of attention to Kaetlyn Osmond in CBC's coverage this weekend below. And now we see that US commentators have given her more attention, at least in terms of tweets and observations, than Canadian ones.

No one can argue that ladies has been the discipline where Canada has relatively underperformed, and that given the large numbers of girls that take up skating, we have not made the most of our female talent pool. But does that mean that there isn't a sports story to be told ...???

I would LOVE for them to do a Kaetlyn story, similar to the podcast from last week that was honest and real and talked about coming back after injury and dealing with the psychology of the sport. Also, a feature on her parents and good old Marystown, NF. Tired of same old from CBC, namely the Tessa and Scott show, and the PJ and Pooh bear "stuff". Ho-hum.

Equally deserving, Gabby and Alaine would be wonderful additions! How about Joannie and Med School even? Or maybe more on Nick Nadeau (the Japanese girls are going to love him) and how about our newest medalist Keegan Messing...from Alaska to Alberta, is it?

well... i agree that CBC has made an odd decision...

what they have done is splitting the GPF footage into 2. This weekend we got Ice dance and men... and next weekend we are getting Pairs and Ladies. If I am not mistaken, the men event was more or less LIVE.... So perhaps that's why they didn't talk about Kaeltyn at all because the whole show will be about her and D/R next saturday???

I know there are a lot of other sports they are covering right now on saturdays and sundays... but I do wish they had put all of GPF together this weekend.

They also better show Kaetlyn's SP because of course, they are focusing on the LPs here, for lack of time.

Final comment : i have to say though that this is a great improvement to have not only the TV broadcasts but also the live streaming with a relatively great quality.

But yes... I agree with your points. I think that perhaps it has to do with some of our Canadian ladies over the years, known for not fulfilling their potential... or headcasing... or just not being good enough... I will spare the names here but there's a bit gap of medal winners between Liz and Joannie... and Joannie retired quickly (understandably so) after Vancouver, when she still certainly had a couple more years in her...

I think that last year, at Nationals, the commentators were over the moon with our top 3 ladies... and have been starting to talk about them as true medal contender recently. It's up to us folks to keep believing and supporting them !

You know, have to admit that with all the CBC and CTV commentary about how Meagan and Eric are ill treated on social media platforms I do wonder from time to time whether they pay any attention to the other analysis about Canadian skaters and skating.

And in fact, PJ Kwong is at times referred to by CBC as their social media reporter for figure skating.

So, I do hope that someone on the research side is following enough to realize that there are storylines that need to be covered and aren't...

yes... the social media reporting annoys me... i have had mixed feelings about PJK for a while now.

but again, we are just old TGee :) hahaha we want real stories... people want beyonce and kim kardashian... so of course, anything going around on social media is taking attention away from the real stuff.... it's sad...

^^
Kaetlyn Osmond

You got Kaetlyn Osmond! Like Kaetlyn, you are a bit of a perfectionist. You are a super technical person, who works tirelessly at your craft until it's mastered. Much like the youngster, you have a very bright future ahead of you.

^^
Patrick says :"i thought you had made a very nice video montage of me... 4ever has been waiting months for it... "

Which grand prix final Canadian figure skater are you? quiz from CBC

You got Patrick Chan! Like Patrick, you're a free spirit that doesn't like to follow the masses. You are a lover of the arts and have great rhythm. Don't be afraid to step away from what you love to do some personal growth.

Haha, that quiz is awesome. I feel like I'm back in high school doing a quiz in YM magazine.

I got Tessa and Scott.

but which one are you? methinks you are more a scott, with your sense of humour and party mode ;)

Sounds about right. Everyone knows I live for those moments when Scott says something obnoxious on camera.

Party mode seems to only happen on the forums here during a competition. Then it's Palm Bays for dayssss.

Hey, I'm a Patrick Chan(er) free spirit ...likely because of my acid tongue and lack of patience with some posters. Yup...sounds about right!

If only TGee and Mr. Rice could open up a charm school, this would satisfy my need for personal growth and I would have their gift of...Zen. Instead, it looks like ancientpeas and I are stuck together. ;) Having a celtic sense of humour, does make us unique free spirits!

Uhm, I got called out last night for being passive aggressive on the Ryan Bradley comment on Kaetlyn thread.:dance2:

Which just goes to show how different we can let ourselves be with our avatars.... In real life, I work hard to be zen because my default is to jump in and debate...

So, I'll do the test on CBC and let you know...

---------------------------------

Well, that worked out more like me than I'd expected....

Meagan and Eric.....

Ah.. but if we are stuck together we will make the perfect ID couple with our perfect skating skills and deep musical interpretation.

I don't think of myself as having a acid tongue but I definitely lack patience and tend to try to us humour to defuse unpleasant situations. I sometimes wonder if that isn't Patrick's problem. He is actually trying to be amusing but it comes off as... bratty (I've heard him called bratty quite a few times)

Was S/B even an option here? I have the feeling you could be Chan, Virtue/Moir, D/R or Osmond.

Wanted to note that looking at her instagrams, Alaine seems to have grown more relaxed and comfortable with the group and the experience as her Holiday on Ice experience has progressed....

Many folks have wondered if she needed a bit of space. I'm thinking the shorter term get away on tour, with new folks to get to know, and a new venue full of strangers to skate for at every stop, might be a good compromise for her. And the income is likely very helpful....

As it looks like she will not be at Worlds and can get ahead on the new season, perhaps she should look towards more of an exhibition tour post season.

wait... :) yes... Kaetlyn and Gabby have earned bigger respect internationally through great performances throughout the GP season... but let's not discard Alaine's chances... I have seen her fight at ACI and land just about everything in the free... she almost won that event and she was on fire.... ice is slippery... she could rank in the top two at Nationals... of course, skatecanada could keep her home despite that but i am not ready yet to think of it as a 2 women party....

go canadian girls!!!!
