Ryan Bradley on Kaetlyn Osmond

I like that she's going for Lutz + Flip content in SP. She's the only top lady going for it right now and it gives her additional BV. :)

She is not the only top lady... Sotskova is doing it and she actually has undeniably clear edges to do it. It's actually a bit unfair to Sotskova for all of Osmond's to be called clean.

yeah sure... but this time, Maria's flip was called <... is it always < or was it just this time???? is it because the tech panel saw it this time and usually doesn't se it???

we cannot assume that a skater who gets edge calls is always going to have that problem, nor that a skater will always not complete rotation...

I don't think it's unfair for a skater like Kaetlyn who is trying to get the jump clean to keep trying it. I agree... some of her lutzes have been cleaner than others at least, on the angle we see... at the same time, we could go on and on about all sorts of calls here that are made or not made.

Why not give the benefit of the doubt to the skater about their intentions? I don't think Kaetlyn is playing unfair nor that the panel has unfair intentions... but it's okay.. i have been called naive ;)

I like that she's going for Lutz + Flip content in SP. She's the only top lady (ok ... bar Sotskova) going for it right now and it gives her benefit of additional BV over the rest of the field. :) That having said I think that ! call should be there at least for otherwise beautiful lutzes ;) We don't know what camera angle is used by tech panel in that case, so maybe that was impossible to make sure if they made review (did they?). Either way Kaetlyn is steadily improving her technique. I don't get the aversion or even hate (?!) that some have towards her LP. It is pretty good & polished even if it's not my taste, not fabulous and less interesting than SP but still pleasant. It's at least not tacky / borderline offensive like LP of the winner.

I added Sotskova before your post, she's still new out there but then Kaetlyn is too at least among top skaters. ;) But it's true that Maria has no problem with edges, Elena also used to not have those issues.

Non-sequitur... people have a choice about what jumps they attempt not whether or not they have to do the rotations. Everyone has to do the rotations but someone doing a jump with unsure edges in the SP is adding uncertainty to the competition on their lonesome. And I have been talking about Sotskova URs since last year.

Just check the Data Analysis of Katelyn's short and free skate. This shows that she can hold her own against the other skaters. At least she skated in the Grand Prix Final and came fourth. That should say something.

I think that was one of the cases when that ''wretched'' 4th place was not exactly upsetting for athlete - in this case: Kaetlyn even after good position after SP. She returned after potentially career ending injury and came back better than ever before, was smiling in K'n'C and did not look distraught. She skated her LP the best she could that day and there were other ladies who were just too good to let it slip.

Let's not make the mistake of blaming skaters for the faults of the tech panels. If skaters want to work on their problem jumps in the SP, that's fine - it's up to the tech panels to do their job. Shin Amano for ISU president!

i think you misunderstand what i am saying.

What if a skater, Kaetlyn for instance, is successful with her lutz 90% of the time... why would she not include it in her SP, just because there's a chance she may not have a clear edge??? and that it may add uncertainty among the tech panel?

I don't understand your reasoning at all. As I said earlier, this thread has a specific topic, so that will be my last answer about this. I see you have been interested in carrots and es for a while and posting about them in other threads. I will let you enjoy these conversations there. I am not equipped to discuss those anyways, as a simple fan of figure skating who is happily and naively accepting calls from the tech panel as that's their job and not mine to do.

totally agree... and regarding Amano, he was at COC... so i guess he didn't think Kaetlyn's lutz deserved an edge call....

Here's the deal... I inherently distrust edge calling and want to see it's usage and impact minimized. I don't want to be talking about edges in the SP period. A future where edge calling is still significant and every top skater does their unsure edge jump in the SP would be a judging nightmare(and a community one too because it would increase griping about the judging). There are definitely still issues in calling rotations but overall the calls on rotations are better and less fungible than edge calls.

And as far as "it's up to the tech panels to do their job"... well last year Gracie Gold all of a sudden inserted a 3F in her SP and then all of a sudden tech panelists stopped calling her 3F(they laughably talked about doing 2 3Fs in the LP early this year). Sometimes tech panels don't do their job and can feel indirect pressure to call things a certain way.

And Shin Amano works in Canada... and I'm not sure how much he deserves his reputation. There was a time where one of my favorite skaters got away with a pretty obvious UR 3Lo when he was heading a tech panel.

Kaetlyn can get positive GOE even if her lutz called "!". So the tech panel no needs to hesitate about calling "!". However she was not called even "!", and i think the tech panel (or their camera angle) shows that her lutz was acceptable level.

IMO, the reason may be that her lutz is quickly take off after the outside edge return to inside. I don't know the timing or period when tech check the edges and use slow or not, but if they check edegs when the toe "just" touch the ice, her lutz become acceptable. Of course the clean lutz jumper keeps outside after take off.

I really enjoy her LP, that opening scene and that centre ice round about...just gorgeous!!! Great speed and transitions, a 3/3 to die for, lovely step sequence. You can see Jeff Buttle's work throughout. I have read where some in another Thread talked about the ending and her 'take me now' moment as they called it and thought hmm, it's LaBoheme folks, she's portraying a young lady in her prime suddenly stricken with consumption (TB), whose allure is heightened by physical decline...

Thanks for the info. I feel like your last comment is a passive aggressive jab at me for seemingly making light of her injury/ries and its correlation to her consistency. I don't appreciate that, because I'm not insinuating anything. In fact I was one of those who felt really bad when her leg was broken, because seeing her performance at Worlds and Sochi Olympics, I really felt that she had an upward trajectory in terms of growth as a skater. And then the accident happened.

I still maintain that if she can keep down the mistakes (esp in her LP) and be consistent in delivering clean programs, she has the potential to be the best. She is an all rounded skater.
If i can compare her to the American ladies, I personally think she has better jumps than Ashley, better performance quality than Gracie. If she can be consistent like Satoko or Medvedeva, I think she can really be up there.

Hi OniBan :)

No jabs at you intended in particular ...

I was trying to make it clear that I was trying to provide information as there seems to be a lack of awareness about the nature of Kaetlyn's injury.

There have been very many comments by very many posters since the beginning of the season that are written in a way that suggest that the authors are either unaware or or willing to acknowledge the magnitude of the rehabilitation that Kaetlyn has undertaken. And that she's still on that path.

It it is especially interesting to learn that there has been more information posted about her injury and recovery on GS than such comments suggests. A number of us have tried to drop in a friendly reminder about the leg break as Osmond4gold did earlier in this thread, because there are invariably several voices that describe Kaetlyn as "injury prone" and "inconsistent." And others who cite her lower scores of last year as she began her return journey as evidence that she doesn't have the goods to be at the top...

So there do seem to be some posters that are seemingly determined to suggest that a major trauma, arising from the kind of on ice collision most of us dread to see or hear about, says something about her inherent deficiencies as a skater.

I really appreciate that you wish to make it clear that you are not among them. I picked up on your response likely because it was the more neutral one. And I would respectfully suggest that, as you have been following Kaetlyn that you, like we have been trying to do, go the extra distance to make the context clear as you have in this more recent post.

BTW We often hear Kaetlyn lumped in with "consistency issues" among the top Canadian ladies. Issues that may be largely due a long history where Canada didn't have more than one international slot in ladies and didn't send its women to Europe for competitive seasoning. But Kaetlyn's 2013 breakthrough finish changed that, as did Alaine Chartrand's top 5 placement as a junior that year. All three top women have had to get their international experience mainly after the age of 16 due to that legacy. And many of us would like to see Skate Canada do even more to get young and promising skaters experience earlier in their development. But Kaetlyn was showing that she was getting past it before the leg break. Gabby Daleman and Alaine still seem to be less or more struggling with it, but it's a separate issue.

I think Kaetlyn is a breath of fresh air, she is a delight to watch. Unlike some I absolutely love both her programs and appreciate that there are still skaters who go for classical music. She is a lovely lovely Mimi she just brings opera to the ice. There is something of old world charm about Kaetlyn which I find very appealing nowadays when we have to endure terrorists attacks tributes and whatnot...
Her jumps are exciting to watch and SS to die for - she is the total package. Wishing her every success and better luck!

NaVi's comment has me wondering... We know there are two tech specialists who must agree on an edge or rotation call. If not, the head tech person steps in to break the tie. What happens if the two tech specialists agree, but the head tech person does not? Can the head tech person over-ride the agreement? I suspect not, since it would defeat the purpose of having the two tech specialists agreeing. :confused2:

Katelyn tweeted about being happy with her placement at the GPF and happy with her performance there on the whole.

What I know about Katelyn is that I enjoy watching her. I enjoy the big jumps and fast spins and good footwork sequences. She is also a good performer. I don't think she's the best out there but I do think she is definitely top 10 right now. If she and Gabby (I'm assuming Gabby and Katelyn will go to worlds as of now) can get the combined 13 (say 5th and 8th?) then we will have 3 ladies at the Olympics. This would be a wonderful thing.

The music at the ending is the part where Mimi is dying and then actually DIES, not where she is suddenly stricken with consumption (TB). Mimi has had TB from the very beginning of the opera, although she doesn't realize how sick she is until midway through the opera when she overhears Rodolfo telling Marcello that he is worried that she doesn't have long to live.

The music at the beginning of the program is also Mimi's, where she meets Rodolfo. The middle part is Musetta's Waltz. Musetta is a completely different character, a blithe, flirty person who is also Mimi's close friend.

Kaetlyn can play Mimi, or she can play Musetta, or she can play both, but she CANNOT play Mimi at the end of the program, since Mimi is dying/dead. She can play Musetta mourning Mimi's death, but no more than that.

BTW, both Mimi and Musetta make a living by um....consorting with men, as neither have any money, family or useful skills. Their respective lovers cannot support them as they are starving artists themselves.

I often wonder if skaters do any research at all on the opera music they use.

Canadian ladies have a better chance of getting three spots than American ladies do of keeping theirs. :shame:

(Thrilled for Kaetlyn and Gabby and Alaine of course - I'm really just being overdramatic.)

See.. I know all the Americans are worried about this but I think it will be fine. I think Ashley will do better with the UR and I still think Gracie Gold can pull it together. She just needs..something. And you others like Mariah Bell or Courtney Hicks who could rise to the occasion. I think a lot will depend on how those three Russian ladies do. And if Satoko gets the calls or not. If Satoko doesn't get called for URs she is right in there again for the top 3. If she does she could be as low as 8th I think. Carolina is such a wild card who knows. But those 3 Russian ladies (whichever ones get sent) are the real key. They could sweep the podium and then it will be a hard for any other team to get 3 ladies to the Olympics.

If Shin Amano is the caller for the WC I'd bet money that Satoko won't medal and Ashley will struggle to be top 5 and the Russian sweep will be very likely and then only the Russians will get 3 ladies. If it is any other caller I think Satoko will medal and Ashley will be at least top 6 which means the other American lady would only have to be top 7. There just isn't a lot of room if the Russians sweep.

...We don't know what camera angle is used by tech panel in that case, so maybe that was impossible to make sure if they made review (did they?)...
I can't speak for other competitions, but at SCI2016, the camera was located at the end of the judges bench closest to the K&C at ice level. That is also the end where the tech people sat, although much more elevated. I suspect it is a poor angle to view jumps located at the opposite end of the rink, on the judges side. Viewing live, the tech people would need to look around monitors and each other. They would also have a steeper downward view. The tech people would likely need to flag a jump for review, and rely on the camera instead. Unlike the big TV cameras located everywhere, the judges camera looked more like someones ameteur home video system on an ordinary camera tripod.

I love Kaetlyn, she's fun and spontaneous with a lot of personality, I love that she is finally seeing success after so many unfortunate injuries.

I think her 3Lz should be at least called !, it seemed okay at Skate Canada but at GPF it could have been called e and I wouldn't have disagreed. She should definitely keep going with the 3Lz though, her 3Lo is inconsistent and you're never going to improve if you don't keep trying and trying in competition. I love the SP but I'm not too impressed about the LP, I liked her Astor Piazzolla LP from last year better but as long as she gets a better program in Olympic year it's all good.

I think Kaetlyn is firmly a top tier skater but for me best in the world is Kurt Browning. Every time I've seen him skate he brings me so much joy. Despite being 50, his 3T and 2A are so high it's amazing.
