2016-2017 State of U.S. Men Figure Skating

*shakes head* I will never understand how anyone can listen to Max when he talks and still dislike him. How?

Now please excuse me while I pick myself up from that wallop in the feels.

Could you translate please?!! Not an expression I'm familiar with.

I like the new choreo and his spins look very good.

Wallop in the feels...hit me in the feelings...it hurt me to hear him hurting.

Oh, okay!

Sorry about the wallop in the feels. It shows that skaters like Max know and care what's said about them and maybe random commenters should realize the impact their words have.

On an unrelated note, my sense is that Jackie Wong is pretty high on Max.

A good chunk of Max's new bullfighter SP as posted by Coach Tom Z:

Another big dose of thanks to you, Tavi .

Esp. cool to see this new video of Max's bullfighter SP  right after hearing the great IceTalk interview and Max's excitement over the program :dance2:.

Go, Max :yay:.

Agree on all counts :agree:.

Emphasis added to your very wise comment :thank:.

... I can't believe how Nathan is in the top 16 male athletes in the US just crazy compared to Ashley. His Grand Prix skates are great but not sure he deserves to be considered at the upper echeolon with other US athletes. ...

Why would he not be considered in the top echelon? He has more quads than the other competitors and he's a GPF Silver medalist. I don't think it's question of top echelon in the US. He's one of the top in the world right now and his scoring potential can be higher if he shows consistency.

Skater Boy's wording was "other US athletes" -- meaning athletes from all USOC sports (not limited to figure skating). SB was referring to Nathan's inclusion on the USOC list of Top 16 Men of 2016 (from all USOC sports). [The link to the USOC list is given in the post (from me :)) quoted by SB.]

An update is that Nathan just won the Male category of the USOC "Best of December" Awards.
The five nominees in his category were from five different USOC sports.
BTW, the Shibs won the USOC Team category for December.
Congratulations to Nathan and the Shibs .

I doubt anyone dislikes Max as a person, even if his skating isn't to everyone's taste.

During the men's event at Worlds 2014, I got into an argument on Twitter with some Abbott fans who were actively tweeting their hopes that Max would fail. I called them on this, of course. Their response? They didn't like his attitude. What?

And then I think back to Boston, where, while Max did get a bigger cheer than a lot of other skaters, it was significantly less than the cheer Adam got. And I thought, one of these men is an absolute sweetheart with not a bad word to say about anyone, but he gets less of a cheer than the one who will roll his eyes if he doesn't like the score and retweet negative comments about his teammates. What gives?

On an unrelated note, my sense is that Jackie Wong is pretty high on Max.

I don't think Jackie is "high" on Max per se, but I think he takes a much more level-headed approach to the US men and isn't prepared to throw everyone else on the scrap heap just because Chen found some form.

It basically means..."You Hit Me Where It Hurts" or "That was a hit below the Belt!"

I think Nathan is looking awesome in respect to competiveness with others; not sure I want to promote him versus Rippon if healthy or Brown or even Aaron. I can't believe how Nathan is in the top 16 male athletes in the US just crazy compared to Ashley. His Grand Prix skates are great but not sure he deserves to be considered at the upper echeolon with other US athletes. That being said Chen right now looks to have healed amazingly fast and on a path to a US title and world medal. Hanyu and Chen and Umo appear to be the leaders with strong contention from Javier and then maybe Boyang.

The top 16 is actually divided into sports. Ther actually saying Nathan is the best in men's figure skating. I'd say that's fair.

But the list did not automatically include the best U.S. men's figure skater.
Not every USOC sport automatically is included in the Top 16.
There was an additional judgment that compared to the best USOC athletes in any/every sport, Nathan was in the Top 16.

As I said above, Ashley was not included in the analogous USOC list of Top 16 Women of 2016. Nor was any figure skater.
In other words, the best ladies' figure skater of 2016 (whoever might be deemed worthy of that description) was not included in the Top 16 Women.

I myself am happy to see Nathan on the list.
But SB is not misunderstanding the significance of the list.

I posted this in Nathan's thread a few days ago, but what do you guys think of this music choice?

I can see him doing something like the Days of Thunder Theme song too, what do you guys think? I'm not sure how to do music cuts yet, hans zimmer music is usually very bold yet there are lots of variation to it as well. It's just something different from the rest of the guys. There is a theme of winning in this music.

eta: trying to do music cuts
the beginning of the song
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xR2-wQv1q6I&t=1202s

and middle part, starts at 21:55
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xR2-wQv1q6I&t=1202s

or another middle part, starts at 43:33 mark (I don't know how to do video cuts yet)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xR2-wQv1q6I&t=1202s

and for ending, I'm sure the music has a part that conveys him wiining the race. So idea is his introduction to car racing, then a romantic part, then winning the race, lol.

eta: this is music for olympic season.

Feeling a bit spoiled right now!

Max gave us some more costume hints in the live video on the Team USA Facebook page...the SP costume is "unique" and "has blue on it". The haters are going to choke to see him in colours!

Also, Tom Z just posted this nice little clip of Max and the 4T!

And then I think back to Boston, where, while Max did get a bigger cheer than a lot of other skaters, it was significantly less than the cheer Adam got.

What gives? People are allowed to cheer according to their own personal taste and response.

On that occasion, a greater number of people enjoyed Adam's skate more.

For whatever reason: skating style, an emotional component to Adam's FS, the way all the elements were integrated to serve the music, etc. Other people like Max's skating better. Max did his 4S-3T right in front of me in St. Paul, and I found it thrilling and his intensity engaging. But his skating didn't reach into my heart as Adam's did.

Not after they skated. Before. When their names were announced.

BS. It is even better to do it after the skate, when the audience can fully praise the performance and aplaud the skater for doing great. They can cheer for their favourite skaters, not also for skaters they don't care about that much.

Edit: Oh, I guess you mean Adam got bigger cheer before they skated.

I see nothing strange about the reigning US Champion getting the biggest cheers on home ice when the names are announced.

I think with Jason, while a stress fracture isn't ideal, it wasn't like he was off the ice for months and trying to rebuild his stamina like he did with his back injury last year.

He does have a little wiggle room with Adam's W/D. He still has a realistic shot at getting 4CC if not Worlds.
