Yuzuru Hanyu: 2016-17 Season

For some reason I feel the same . He does well in the FS when he's behind on the SP. Fights for absolutely everything. The question is...4 quads or 5?? What kind of YOLO quad will we see if he does one???

Time for 4LZ to debut on the stage:clapper:

I think Tracy is here because of last year... and she is the one he credits with helping him last summer when he was full of doubts, so I hope that they can give him more of what he needs right now. I do not like the 'not believing in his abilities ' bit.

I still feel even if he goes clean in the free he wouldn't break his WR. They'll find a way to keep him down. But I don't really care right now. I just want Yuzu to be satisfied with his skate.

It doesn't make sense that JSF will stop backing him. When Yuzuru was Shoma age he was already Olympic Champion, and this season the one who got better results when they competed together is Yuzuru...
Now I'm thinking about him being disappointed and saying this "I have a lack of abilities:palmf:" kind of things. This time he really needs Tracy and Brian attention, they have to show him that nothing is lost yet.

I agree it doesn't make sense, but I've never understood them. Sometimes organizations prefer people they assume they can control and influence, and extreme youth plays a part in that. Yuzuru has specific ideas and values in regard to his own skating, which could bring him into conflict with a bureaucracy. And fame gives him a level of clout they may covet, yet resent. They are acting against their own interests imo.

He always blames to himself, like usual. It is very frustrating to be trapped by the same issue over and over again, and I wont be surprised if judges and the fed feel the same way. It is his decision to not make any changes, then he's gonna take responsibility for that. Let's face the truth, the room for him to make mistakes is nearly non-existing right now, even when he goes clean.

Yeah, he's not benefitting from consistency bonuses anymore.

This.
That has been my assessment in watching him perform this season seems like the judges are sending a message especially with the results of the Grand Prix final and 4CCs is that if Hanyu wants to win he has got to be consistent and he's got to be clean. They proved that they were with more than willing to give somebody else the win if they are cleaner and more consistent than him. (example: Nathan and Shoma beating him in the FS at GPF, and Nathan's win at 4CCs)
He can't afford to make a mistake or two in the program anymore he doesn't have that advantage it's none existent. If he wanted to win worlds he should have abandoned that combo. It's a tough lesson to learn.

I will happily stop following figure skating and the horrible judging when yuzu decides to leave, but the one thing I will never give up on is yuzu, is when he goes through those bad moments that he needs the most support, and I know he will do amazing in the free program:luv17:

I wasn't a fan of figure skating in general.. I start to learn about this sport because of him..Figure Skating is a beautiful sport with the artistry and technical component. Every skater out there was amazing. But the figure that I love in this sport is Hanyu. So, the day he leaves this sport I would follow him.

I just want him to realize that he doesn't lack the ability to deliver an outstanding performance.
You started training very late and came back from an injury, what you've done until now is amazing when you take that into account, Yuzu 😢

Agreed. I do not think the European judges like his free and that makes it easy to hold back marks... as does skating first. Javi skates last so imagine the candy that will be thrown down if he is on... and I think he will be. He might break the world record here... really.

Actually it makes lots of sense for JSF to back Shoma more. Yuzu has been talking about retirement after 2018 ever since Sochi, and likely he wont stay in the sport for too long anyways. JSF needs another leading role in men's filed to compete with the rest, and what they have learnt is to back your skaters in the early phase so it will be more easily accepted by the world as idealy skaters will grow up to match up with the scores; by then, all will be forgiven.

Hmm, you may be right. They don't care WHO the champion is, only that they have one. Where they make a mistake is thinking everyone can inspire the same type of following Yuzuru has. If they stick with him, they can grow the sport and make more money.

I'll give you Nathan, because he's been steadily proving he can land his jumps consistently (except 3A....) but in what world is Shoma more consistent? Everyone's pretty shaky all around, not just Yuzu.

When Yuzu decides it's time, I'm sure a lot of people are going to go with him and leave this joke of a sport

I agree :) so for the time he will keep skating I will appreciate every moment he is on ice, even this moment of anxiety :p, following yuzu is like watching a suspense film, at least for me, you never know what's going to happen next

Since I'm new in this sport, I don't know about the difficulty of the transition, entrance and exit in figure skating. But I'm curious , which one is more difficult, Seimei or H&L?

imo the orthodox camp in jsf is just trying to prove a point. none of their home-growns has received this level of success without significant handholding. You would think they'd get the message after Arakawa and then Yuzu and swallow their pride, but their reaction has been to do whatever they're doing instead. It's very short sighted. Yuzuru, he's really one of a kind, he's driven, smart as hell, extremely charismatic. He can have a wonderful fulfilling life even if he leaves this dirty sport. I don't know what the jsf will do if their handpick handreared stars don't pan out.

I think he's going to break it. But I'm shallow and it's Javi, he's nice to Yuzu, if he breaks it I won't be mad. Yuzuru will still be the first who broke the 300 mark and broke his own record twice.

Ahh :ghug: I hope you guys there managed somehow! He was still great, even with that dratted combo!

Well lets be honest here. JSF is not backing Yuzuru, they're full on pushing Shoma. There's not much to be done about that. Even the location of the Worlds and all the European judges, they're just another issue that is exacerbated by lack of Fed help.
But, but! They can all just toddle off! The fed, JSF, everyone. It's bad now, it'll be worse next season.

Fingers crossed he can skate cleanly on Sat because it'll be a nice boost for him, mentally and in general, for next season. But primarily, mentally. He should never doubt himself, never. I get so angry, for him. Gah. So I hope that focused, fierce samurai he has within himself comes out to play on Saturday and shows everyone why he is who he is. I don't care if he wins with that. I just care that he shows what he obviously needs to show, which is his full abilities, in order to feel at peace.

And I don't want to say what else I'm thinking because really, not pretty

I would LOVE to hear what else you're thinking because I think you're one of the most insightful posters on this forum.

I don't think there will be someone like him for another few decades at least. Not in men's figure skating at least, and probably across all fields. When has men's figure skating ever been more popular than women's? Seriously, the stadium was packed today. Can't say the same for women's.

I don't understand the need to find excuses and resort to blaming fed backing etc. to his scores. He made the mistakes and got those scores because of them. I don't think he said he doubted his abilities because he didn't get a good score from the judges but rather because he messed up the combo and couldn't give a no-miss performance even though his condition was good. He also didn't realize then that the deduction was from the late start.

Let's not trivialize his abilities by tying his scoring potential so tightly to the judges and his supposed fed backing that is going to Shoma now. He does not need to be gifted to score high, he just has to perform.
