2017-2018 Programs by Discipline

Noooooooo!!!!! 2 warhorses for Karen!?!?!? I am so disappointed 😔. There are thousands and thousands of music choices out there. But what annoys me more is, even if you do decide on a warhorse, why do you have to use the exact same cuts as everyone else?😫😫 Like: Carmen is a 3-hour opera, right? But everyone uses the same parts of Carmen. Same with Swan Lake and Turandot. Each has about 3 hours worth of music but everyone's 4 minutes sound the same. Boo.

Along these lines...hoping that those who have announced they are skating to La La Land are actually skating to different songs from that movie.

I'm less concerned with her music choices and more upset that Karen isn't getting choreography from Shae-Lynne or Chris Dean or Jeffrey Buttle. Shell out the big bucks, USFS! She deserves it.

I don't understand. So, the top-name choreographers cost a lot of money? So in order to get a quality program, a skater must either be rich, or have their federation back them, or take a chance on a no-name choreographer and simply hope for the best?
This is frightening. How are other skaters without those 2 options supposed to get good programs ??

It's not like top choreographer always give you good programs. While many not famous choreographer can give you good program. And in the end, good program means nothing if you don't skate well. So as long as you do well, you get good results.

They don't. Or they do, it's just that the choreographer isn't a "name" one.

"name" choreographers don't always produce quality programs. Lori Nichol serves up more dross than quality IMO. And there are plenty of stories about smaller-country skaters keeping programs for multiple seasons because they couldn't afford new ones. Brezina, I think, was one of the more famous examples.

"Couldn't afford new programs " ? Wait, this is really a thing? Just how much money does the skater's family have to have?

I'm wondering about certain skaters who had their federation's backing, but still had poor choreography.
And I'm also wondering about those skaters who weren't at the top of their federation's list , much less the top of the skating world (Fedichkina; Hannah Miller; Alexander Johnson; Rajicova; Vasiljevs) but nonetheless had detailed and nuanced choreography. Do they shell out their own money for choreographers?

Duh?

I thought it was extremely well-known that skating is a VERY expensive sport. So much money goes into coaching, ice time, competition fees. Getting a new program and a new costume can be many thousands of dollars - thousands of dollars that skaters may not have to spare after paying for their coaching/ice time etc. Skaters do shell out their own money for choreography.

And the USFS isn't paying for anybody's choreography.

Yes that's a thing. Why do you think skaters have gofundme pages? Even Vasiljevs has one ;)

And from what I read eons ago, Kwan used to pay Lori about 10K USD for just 1 program. Then you have to factor in the cost of costumes which can cost thousands as well. Sotnikova's olympic dresses were about 1K euros a piece, now how much do you think a Kwan/Yuna/Mao dress would cost ;)

I'm really disappointed in Karen's choices. I mean I think she's one of the few actual artists, so I was expecting more. I wasn't much of a fan of her Tango LP last season and it looks like she's continuing in that vein. I would have loved it if she adapted her "Butterfly Lovers" or "House of Flying Daggers" exhibition into a LP and even kept "On Golden Pond" for the SP.

I'm going to wait until I see the programs from Karen before I judge. Maybe they'll be so good it'll blow my mind  But why two similar programs? :gaah:

Some more of Jason Brown's SP: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5Cq91Gkeh4

I didn't even finish watching the video to be honest. I'm just too hyped for it with too high of expectations - I'll wait for more of a finished product with better video quality.

I feel a little bad for Hamilton fans, because you know so much: I hope Jason can do justice for fans and non-fans alike.

Although after hearing about Karen's program, I am minded of the part in Ted Flett's interview where he said to Jason, "I imagine if Rohene said, you're doing Carmen this year, you might go whoooah not so fast", and they both had a big laugh.;)

No one can accuse Jason of riding the warhorses this year:biggrin:

But who is Mark Pillay? does anyone knows his work?

Mark Pillay is a reasonably well-known choreographer who's done plenty of work for Tammy's skaters before. He is Brendan's main choreographer and was responsible for that delightful Singin' in the Rain SP last year.

(He was also responsible for Footloose but we don't talk about that.)

Yes skating is expensive in general: Lori Nichol for example was charging around 15,000.00 for a LP last I knew.
