2017 Glacier Falls FSC Summer Classic

Just watched Jason's programs, I like the second half of his SP and the first half of his LP a lot. --As a starting point, it's very promising. :agree:

Ok, I'm eating crow. I don't mind the warhorse choices for Karen anymore. That Carmen needs some work, that footwork section to Habanera could use a lot more flirtation and selling, and I could use a Jason Brown high kick now and again with some more highlight moves to take advantage of some of the empty spaces where the music is calling for it, but that program looks HOT for July and she sold it well. I'm looking forward to seeing how this program will progress from now to Pyeongchang. I'm loving the editing, the costume, the sensual shoulder moves, her attack, the aggressiveness...everything.

Go Karen!!!!

Sorry I'm late I had to battle a line of little kids to say hi to Jason, went to the only Jack in the box without an outlet for a quick dinner, so I'm in a random spot for the sake of having a charger which also has the worst wifi

We appreciate your posts (wow, they still have Jack in the Box on the West Coast) and of course saying hi to Jason takes precedence!:agree:

Wow, Karen is really here to play! It is almost as her National title and 4th place finish at Worlds lifted her up to new places. It seems as she is embracing being the National champion and she skates with such confidence and attack. If she skates anything near to this consitently throughout the season, I believe US has their meda hope for the Olympics.
Her musical ear is top notch, she knows how to hit the musical highlights and even though the choregraphy and overall pacing of the program needs some work, it feels exciting to watch.
The spring Karen gets in most of her jumps is considerable and I can see the positive grades of execution box tic as a slot machine at the casino
Well done to Karen, Courtney&Mirai for showing us some great early season competivness.

Seeing Karen skate here finally made me feel like the Olympics are coming and I'm getting so excited thinking about it.

I don't think you can ask for a much better start to the season at a summer competition than that. Karen means business. Sure there are things to fix- but this is July.

to those who watch Karen Chen's LP, Do you think international judges will give her level 4 on her STSQ? Idk but it looked too simple and flat compare to Edmunds and Zhang's STSQ

She hasn't had these programs very long, it's July. Would I call it a solid 4 right now, maybe not, but I'm not particularly worried about it. Zhang's step sequence is lovely but she is slow. Polina I don't know what to think about right now.

About the step sequence, I think both in the SP and LP, it's obvious she's working through it and probably still figuring out the right choreography for the music with her choreographer (Karen, unlike others, seems to have a heavy-hand in her programs). The SP in particular has a very ineffective step sequence. However, I really doubt Karen is going to keep it like that from now to February. This is July. We all know Chen is capable of a level 4 (level 3 at worst) step sequence when she's in fighting shape and competition mode. Especially compared to someone like Caroline Zhang whose footwork was very slow and laborious.

Did Karen go yet?

Wow sorry about that I KNOW I typed it up on my phone maybe the wifi spazzed out between her and Caroline. The baby in a stroller in front of me was clapping along with the crowd even though she wasn't actually watching the event I wish I had it on video!

Great Job Karen! This is how you start the Olympic season (+why warhorse works)!

IMHO both programs could do with some fine tuning, the choreography are not yet eloquent enough for those scores, but Karen always improve her programs as the season goes on, and she will only do better. She has great musicality and great performing instinct but the choreographic prescriptions need to be there. I am really looking forward to seeing how she progresses through out the year, and hopefully no injuries.

(+ just noticed, what happened to Polina?!)

Karen's Composition and Musical Interpretation is the best we've seen so far this summer. I can't wait to see where she goes from here.

Lenny, assuming this is your twitter, I love your comment about how you felt fit cause you run half-marathons and then changed your mind after seeing skaters here. As a runner (or a hobby jogger if you're feeling snobby), I relate to this on so many levels! The amount of fitness needed for 7 minutes of skating programs is unreal.

I remember Jason Brown did a 5k fun run and I checked his time for fun and the pace was like in the six minute range, lol. I don't know if I can even do one mile at that pace, ha.

Thank you for your reports!!
