Yulia Lipnitskaya

I love Yulia's commentary so much! :luv17: Thank you for translating! She's really knowledgeable! I always liked her personality (in fact actually more than her actual skating) and it's a delight to listen to her thoughts!

Over on twitter maoasads translated that:

Did anyone hear how happy Yulia was for Misha? "Да, Да, Да!!!" :yahoo: And then promptly spilled some truth tea on the fickle, opinionated nature of figure skating fans & headline-clickbait press in regards to supporting/dissing skaters. Oh gurl, you tell it! Both parts are translated here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EForygWu8wc

Thanks! I agree with her completely about the Russian press with their loud headlines. As soon as Kolyada won COC, there were headlines like "Kolyada gives the Russians hope for an Olympic medal" or "Kolyada is totally capable of winning a medal at the Olympics." Averbukh also said so in an interview. Kovtun's story hasn't taught them anything. And Kolyada obviously has problems with nerves as it is. Yulia is right that it must be impossible to shield oneself from this, and I bet there are people who say the same things to him face to face too.

But I disagree with Yulia about fair-weather fans. She of all people shouldn't be complaining about this. Fans were supporting her for as long as she kept skating, and the fact that this thread continues to be lively is a testament to fans' dedication. I mean, what other commentator has a thread devoted to him/her and people translating what he/she said, even if they were excellent skaters themselves? And I can think of many other examples of fans supporting skaters through ups and downs. So I don't know if the fair-weather fans phenomenon is common in other sports, but I don't find it to be true of figure skating, and I was surprised to hear Yulia say that. The press now - that's another story. They are quick to praise a skater to the skies at the first sign of success and pronounce him a national hope and as quick to fall on him and tear him to shreds if their hopes don't materialize.

Of course, Yulia didn't mean her fans! Everyone knows how loyal we Yulia-fans are; and Yulia knows it, too, she thanked her fans many times at different occasions... She was speaking about Kolyada at that moment - and concerning men's skating she is absolutely right. Sad but true, we haven't had a really stable male skater since Plushenko's times, and people are really hungry for such one to appear. Of course, each male skater in Russia has a bunch of his loyal fans - but in general the fans' moods at the forums are constantly oscillating between doom and gloom and bashing this or that skater for this or that fail - and euphoria about the win of this or that new one, who is promply labelled to be a new hope. Kolyada's chances to become a top skater look good - and nevertheless after the Finlandia trophy, for example, there was a lot of sneering like "ah, just another Kovtun". So, concerning the fans in men's skating Yulia is quite right.

I don't think 'fans' is the correct word to describe it, perhaps overzealous skating netizens is what Yulia was referring to. One only needs to scroll down to the comments section of any Youtube video, VK skating fanpage, or sports articles to see the fickle rantings and lecturing that goes on there, but then again...the same can be said for any sport. It's just sad that a fairly niche sport like figure skating, where enthusiastic audiences/fans are few and far between are often drowned out by the loud keyboard-trigger-happy mob that litters the internet and social media.

Regarding the actual fans of individual athletes, Yulia had this to say about them a few weeks ago where she and Alina Kabaeva answered this exact question (translated by geiger):

A transcript of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTw-aCVqjdA

[Section from original video, 1:38:18]

Host: Alina, Yulia, I must ask you as well, since you've always felt this pressure too, and because of the huge love that's out there for both of you, ask you about people's reaction when something goes wrong. How do we teach people to support athletes all the way through, no matter what happens, from the very beginning of their careers to, well, advanced age?

Alina Kabayeva: A real fan will always support you, through good and bad. Those who leave us when we lose, well, sorry about that. Sometimes that happens, but eventually we will win, and they will be back [laughs].

Host: Yulia, what do you think?

Yulia: I think the same, absolutely. The moment you lose or something goes wrong, some people change their opinions in a moment, all the support goes away. However, there is this certain group of people that are truly with you with all their hearts, that really feel for you, and it's not just your relatives, but real fans. And this, perhaps, is the most precious thing that any athlete can have in their life.

Regarding Kolyada or any upcoming promising skater (particularly in Russia), it would be wise to approach fame with a cool head (or even a spoonful of cynicism). Let the media circus hype and the mob rage, but you yourself must not believe it.

This thread has 2.7 million views

These translations are making me enjoy the sport again like I used to and her perspective is priceless. She really seems to empathize with the skaters and while I don’t understand without the translations I sense a very genuine tone to her. I can’t explain how rejuvenating it is and now I’m very much looking forward to another olympics.

I’m only in second place with 1,200 posts in this thread

Things we learned from CUP OF CHINA
Darth Sunny has not seen Star Wars. :scowl:
Gaby is apparently a good singer.
Mai is cute and has good presentation skills, but under-rotated a toeloop.
Despite the fall, Yulia thought Alina needn't worry as all this is good experience for her, noting that Alina's SP is very difficult, filled with crazy steps & transitions without a moment of rest, but there are still things to improve on (like her arms/hands). She is also glad that their changed her entry into her axel.
Yulia revealed that she muted their mics during Misha's performances, because of their yelling and clapping.
Yulia says that some skaters act rudely during official practices, are inconsiderate and do not care about others who are on the ice.
Papadakis & Cizeron's Moonlight Sonata is a work of art.
Liza looked extra beautiful during her FS. Duh.
Yulia mentioned that she missed medal ceremony at COC 2014 because she didn't know, as it was not written on the schedule that she was given, and that the Chinese reps/organizers apologized to her afterwards about the incident/controversy.
Girl with plunger makes all laugh.
After 2 consecutive La La Land programs, Denis & Yulia have a discussion on who should've won Best Picture at OSCARS2017. Denis notes that Moonlight is stronger and deserved the win.
Yulia mentioned that Maxim (not Trankov) who commentated Pairs with her was yelling so much during Sui & Han's FS that he asked for permission to yell on-air, whilst watching standing up. Denis asked if Maxim tried to lift and do a triple twist with Yulia out of excitement? Yulia replied "I hid in the corner until the program was over, so no."
Skater's nickname for Hao Zhang is 'Papa Chan (Zhang?)' as he is so tall and very friendly and nice to everyone.
Madison is hot (looks a bit like Alina's older sister) and is clearly a good/not-picky partner as she "can skate with even chair"
Yulia thinks Alina can rock the tigerprint leotard, but thinks that was one of the weirdest exhibition programs she's ever seen. Denis hopes Alina didn't summon the rain god to Beijing.
Denis doesn't know how to feel about Misha's Baba Yaga EX, and the music fan in him is kind of glad the composer Musorgsky didn't have to live to see this. Meanwhile Yulia is like "Omg, what even is this?"
Yulia: "Our skaters have very weird EX programs today..."

Feel free to add more.

LOLed so much while nodding furiously in somes parts! Gotta love the girl, Yulia always tell the truth!!

Don't worry Yulia, I don't think Lori Nichols has seen Star Wars either.
Funny comment from both about the weird leotard around a candle gala, did Averbukh come up with that?
Hilarious behind the scene stories for mistaking Shoma for a girl at Juniors GP. Oh boy!!
Interesting insights to Vasiļjevs. Very considered young man just like Lambiel. Hope to see more sophisticated program from him going forward.
Really good to set the record straight for the COC2014, I figured it was something like that. Everyone over reacted like crazy then.
Why was Maxim yelling?
What did Yulia think of Han Yan's FS?
Denis - Yulia's co host, he should have no problem getting Ashley and Miriah's number on his own, he is cute
Like the latest Yulia's photo shoot very much. She looks wiser, maturer, happier and healthy looking!

Thanks for the translation, really great insights to this special girl. Hope she proves to be a big hit with the Russian skating fans.

To answer your questions, I translated those two videos!

Maxim was absolutely floored by Sui and Han's free skate. A full translation of his and Yulia's commentary is here. Screaming starts after 5:20 ;)

Aaand here is the video for Han Yan's free skate.

I find it really funny. They commentator clearly got their information from his wiki page which has the wrong information.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yan_Han_(figure_skater)

'I will take care of you' is CLEARLY not from Romeo and Juliet, which makes the commentary even funnier when Yulia says he even looks a bit like Romeo and he compared him with Leonardo DiCaprio  (Why... is it the grey hair?!! Must be the Zombie 80 yrs old Romeo came back for his child bride.) Han's SP was to 'A thousand years', a new cover to the soundtrack to twilight OST. (May be that is why the Edward silver hair)

It is pretty nice the former Juliette can see him as a Romeo though...

Yulia makes me want to learn Russian for some reason.

Yay...Russian propaganda works.
Ps. beware the crafty crocodile... and mermaids too/

you are a pretty sad individual arn't you... time to get over what ever problem you have. This is the not the right forum for it.

Nope. I don't have any problem with that. What about you?
Ps. Beware the KgB
Pss. It was not me who started this

Me too!! She seems like an interesting character and I feel like she genuinely wants everyone to succeed. I’m pretty much only waiting for her videos to catch up with what happens on the GP. Im as excited to watch Russian Nationals as I am to hear her take on things. :yay:

I need to know how she feels about Gubanova!!!! Or wild girl Tarakanova.:hap85:

I am looking forward to seeing her debut. I haven't been following juniors these days so it will be seeing everything with fresh eyes (which I prefer to anyway with everyone's program) Should make a nice welcoming contrast to the Eteri girls. Variety is the spice of life! :)

I think Yulia having been through so much as a competitor offers a refreshing, empathetic and credible insight to all her commentaries, Which makes it really interesting.

She knows COP skating but seems to fight against it (you can see how she enjoy the process, experimenting to create a vision, I have always thought she is a little budding artist waiting to happen) and what it means to survive the Russia teams that had shaped her view on this sport- all the good and bad things that go with it. That is why her elation for Elena is pretty sweet and so genuine. They have both been on the brunt end of the stick having achieved success early, and keep on working hard to fight for their place, the self-believe despite the fed definitely have their favs that seems to change with seasonality. Pity we couldn't see what kind of butterfly she would become. Will she be doing show skating from now on? Coaching? Choreographing?

Did she travel to Japan for this event or is she in a studio in Moscow?

Will she be doing show skating from now on? Coaching? Choreographing?

Right now she doesn't want to be involved in "active" skating but I hope she will change her mind.
Re: learning Russian. I had started watching it before I started watching FS. Who infiltrated my mind then? :scratch2:
