i just re-watched his Worlds 2017 LP, amazing program! Every time I re-watch I see something different. There are so many subtle nuances and movements, great choreography.
It made me realize how much I loved his Loco program and I must confess (don't kill me) that I prefer it to
Turnadot 2 and wished he had kept Loco for this season.

I loved Loco. Shoma made me love Loco, when I disliked it the first time I saw it. And now it is very special. I don't believe Turandot 2 will be remembered as one of Shoma's signature programs, because a) it is a kind-of repeat and b) the 5 Quad Version makes it hard to sell it. And Shoma is one of the better artists on ice. I don't know if I would have wanted Shoma to repeat Loco in this season, because it is a hard program to get into for the casual public. Turandot is pretty easy for the average viewer to understand. This season is all about the jumps, to stay competitive. I'd rather he wouldn't have repeated at all. Chosen a new program with 4 Quads. Focused on selling that 4 Quad program. But this is his choice and we have to live with it. I expect at least 6 more years of Shoma competitively. Next season I'm pretty sure there won't be a repeat and when the Olympics are over the team can start to focus on that artistry, his biggest strength.

It does make sense for the general public they know and understand Turandot. Could you imagine the audience in Korea if Shoma
skated to Loco when the music section of the screaming woman starts:shocked:. They would be scratching their heads for sure.

I didn’t like Loco at first and but Shoma made me fall in love with Loco after all. Especially with the step sequences. I was like urggggg everytime he staked that part. I think Turnadot is a reasonable choice for the Olympic season. And considering the miserable memory that he had the last time he skated to Turnadot at Worlds, this would be like a redemption to prove that he has gotten better since then. Yet, Bluerandot hasn’t created moment so far this season, I pray and pray he will skates it perfectly at the Olympics’ stage.

That being said though, I’m SO looking forward to his new programs next season. I hate Olympic season for some particular reasons. I was cheering on Mao and Dai last time and we all knew how it went. Even In Vancouver when they win medals, I don’t think that they were completely satisfied with the results.
For the team event, I hope Shoma skates at the Short and the “3rd guy” skates the long. I don’t see it that the JPN’s Fed would let neither him nor Hanyu skate in this team competition so at least one of them will have to skate. If Shoma skates his “Winter” perfectly at the team, he will be fired up for the individual competition. That would be a good thing.

I understand your dislike of the Olympics. For me the worst thing about it is the "what-if's" in the case of Daisuke 2010, what-if he had landed his quad in the long. I know, deep down, he would've won the Olympics if he had landed that Quad. It's just one performance, perhaps even just one jump, one stupid slip-up that can kick you off-podium, if you're unlucky. And you never get that moment back. If GPF=Olympic Games, I would be so frustrated with that 0,50 point difference and that stupid time deduction, I would probably stop watching competitions for a while. It is especially hard if one of your favourites has the potential to win. And I realize, more and more, that while I believe Nathan will make it, still I know that Shoma is able to do it as he is not worse than Nathan. So secretely or not so secretely I wish for Shoma to win the Olympic Gold Medal. I want him to be satisfied with his performance, and if the competition is similar to Worlds 2017 I'm okay with a silver and not too hung-up that it's not Gold. The circumstances of the competition are important, too. I just hope it won't be a weird event like Sochi.

Sochi was a tough Olympics for me with the Mao and Dai drama. I was exhausted after it ended.

I said to myself OK Dai will probably retire (which he did) now I can relax and just enjoy all of the other
talented skaters and not get caught up in all of the skating drama that goes with having a number one favorite.
Then along comes Shoma and here I am again. It is all Shoma's fault. lol.

If Shoma doesn’t win the OGM, I hope Nathan wouldn’t win either (secretly hope that none of Nathan’s fans is reading this right now). Not that I don’t think Nathan deserves it. In the contrary, I think he is one of the strongest contenders and his talent is totally worthy of a champion. But so is Shoma. In the years to come, I expect him and Nathan to be in neck-to-neck battle for gold in competitions (along with Boyang and Mikhail). If Nathan walks away the Olympic champ, people will always consider Shoma as that not-so-great jumper versus the great Olympic champ Nathan Chen. My heart aches just thinking of that scenario.

By the way, Toyota is also “proud partnership” of team USA ( it is announced every 15 minutes on NBC Olympic channel) so one way or another, they have vested interests in Nathan winning the OGM as well. Haters really need to stop bashing him for being sponsored by his local company ( Toyota’s origin is from Nagoya).

You think so? It might just push Shoma in the right direction if he loses out to Nathan. I think the Shoma who will go to the 2022 Olympics will be a much better skater, as he's older and has had more experience. He won't lose motivation. I see that as the biggest risk for Nathan, if he wins Olympic Gold. He might continue for a bit, but I don't think he will go to 2022 and try to defend the title.

I agree with demarinis, Fernandez is very strong. I can see him win the Olympics too.

Honestly, in terms of placement, I want Shoma to podium and possibly win, but the placement is less important to me than the performance. I hope he and other skaters will perform well, and that Shoma especially performs in a way that he will be proud to look back on.

I was thinking in the beginning of this season that I was hoping there was not such a thing as the Olympics. It just brings too much tension because everyone wants to win an event that only occurs every 4 years (which is really what makes it so prestigious, aside from its origin in Greek history). The only good thing I can see about the Olympics is that it brings the casual viewers in (especially for the more obscure sports, like curling). As already pointed out, there's very little chance we would see Loco during an Olympic year, and yet it is one of the most beautiful programs among the men last year. People are afraid to innovate and try new things that may not help their scores, during an Olympic year.

Regardless of whoever wins the Olympics, at the end of the day we know that just because a skater never won the Olympics, that does not mean they're not great. Some skaters who are considered as among the greatest in history (like Michelle Kwan... hello demarinis!), or the most memorable, never won the Olympics. I don't think skaters who won Worlds or the Grand Prix Final multiple times can be considered any less good than someone who won the Olympics once (although usually the Olympic Champion would have at least gotten a medal in or won those two other events previously). Also, the performances of great skaters in the Olympics are not necessarily the ones for which they are best remembered (remembering Yuzuru's and Patrick Chan's (and Javier's as well) FS performances in the 2014 Olympics... ouch  This is despite the fact that they won Gold and Silver.). Thus, whether the Olympics will strongly affect how Shoma is viewed or remembered is still debatable and remains to be seen, but in the meanwhile, I'll just keep enjoying his performances and watch him get better in his skating without worrying too much about it.

Shoma's 20th birthday in 5 days, and Japanese Nationals in 8 days (or less now)! Full :cheer: :hap10: mode on. Should he celebrate his birthday with some alcoholic drinks or wait until the competition is over? I need an answer to this most important question!

Awww it's gonna be his first sip right? I need this to be filmed and posted on the Internet so we can see his reaction (Itsuki, we are counting on you ;))

for the team event, i personnally like that event but i think they should schedule it after the individual events. I would be a lot nicer with everyone more relaxed and it wouldn't possibly put the performances in jeopardy for the individuals. It could also be a kind of redemption for the people who didn't do well in individuals.

I absolutely agree with this. That;s how they do in the Youth Olympics right? I mean if the team event was originally created to be of a less serious nature, move it to the end! Just like WTT is at the end of the season, every one had fun and stress-free! And it's a good chance for redemption too. Imagine what would it be if the team event in Sochi were skated after the individual event. How would Yulia and Mao have skated. how would the men have skated?

 Thank god I'm not the only one who thought this! I have a feeling a drunken Shoma would be hilarious! :dance2:

As you said, Michelle is the perfect example. Many people wanted her to win a gold, especially in Nagano, people wondered whether the skating order had affected the result (well, you know, the infamous 6.0 practice os holding back the score). But anyway, what Michelle did to the sport is not by winning an Olympic Gold Medal, but she gave great and memorable performances that made the whole world remember her. East of Eden, Dumky trio, Red Violin, Aranjuez etc.. With all the great performances like this (and 5 Worlds Gold medals lol), if you look back, the Olympics is just another competition. As it is famously said; "Success isn't measured by a gold medal."

Thus, I don't think the performance in the Olympics will affect how we view the skaters. Yuzuru and Patrick bombed their FSs, but it does not change the fact that they both are amazing skaters. It is more about how they contribute to the sport and write their named in history that makes them memorable.

Sheesh! That looks like it came out of a mold! OMG! I was gonna make a dead banana comment, but I'd better not! That reminds me a little bit of my special purple velvet volleyball birthday avatar I had! There was another fun picture on that account! https://www.instagram.com/p/BcKQaoenz0W/?taken-by=victoria10yxj Looks like Alina has been smitten with the Prince's charm. (maybe? :luv17:)
