Hanyu update/Olympic berth criteria

I don't know why someone on a previous page was insisting that whoever gets chosen instead of Hanyu, if he's not ready, should be a medal contender. That's a very tall order in this field. And it may not even matter to the federation. The writing on the wall is that Shoma will be the next olympic champion.

:agree:

In this case scenario Japan will have a only one Olys medal contender instead of two, just like other nations , a more equal battle .

The JSF might desperately need him at the Olympics but even without Hanyu it's going to be a very interesting men's competition and I don't think anyone will be disappointed - least of all the ISU. Hanyu isn't a shoo-in anymore for that OGM. I do wish him a speedy recovery as his participation will definitely increase the interest.
Yes it is very interesting like what we saw at GPF this season.

Hanyu will be chosen for Olympics with JSF's current criteria here https://twitter.com/Iron_Klaus/status/941581163273113601

He is 1st in the world standing and currently the record holder. His SB in SP is 112. JSF is not stupid to not let him go.

JSF and ISU would go to every temple in Japan to pray for Hanyu's health. They desperately need him at the Olympics. Anyone who thinks Hanyu might not be chosen by JSF clearly has some mental issue.

Put the South Korea Oly committee in that temple tour as well

Au contraire - I would be sorely disappointed.

Well, I would be sorely disappointed if anyone who qualified for the Olympics and is able to compete wasn't there.

I would be sorely disappointed if Hanyu or any of the other guys didn't skate. If Chan didn't skate. If Julian Yee Zhi-Jie didn't skate. I'm disappointed that the North Korean pair isn't skating. etc.

But that being said, for me personally (and I'd imagine for most skating fans), one skater/pair doesn't define or "make" the competition either. YMMV, though.

Propably as much interesting as was GPF :disagree:

Same here - I simply don't care about any of the other so-called top men right now, except for Javier. And it would just feel wrong for the reigning champ not to be able to defend his title after all that he's been through.

LOL, ouch. Some of these "so-called" top men have beaten Hanyu previously and/or recently. So, IMO, they've earned the right to be referred to as more than "so-called" top men - they are the top men... regardless of whether Hanyu is injured or not.

What I meant about no one would be disappointed if Hanyu didn't skate - said differently - the men's competition is soooo strong this year that there will still be outstanding skating to watch. Not that if Hanyu didn't skate no one would care. I should have worded my post better. IF he doesn't, it will definitely be a disappointment to many.

This is how I interpreted it. I think it's okay for you to think that the men's competition will still be amazing even if Hanyu were absent, just as it's okay for people to think the men's competition will be awful if Hanyu's absent.

It would be understandably disappointing to not have one of the top skaters from the past quadrennial, and reigning World/Olympic champion, not compete. But there are a slew of other stellar skaters who are ready and capable of showing the world some amazing skating and delivering an interesting competition where any one of 5 or so skaters could win gold, whereas in previous Olympics it's for the most part been a rather predictable 1 or 2-horse race, so to speak.

Is this one of the mysterious canadian reports two posted have already mentioned?

Nope. This seems absolutely new: look at the date / hour of the tweet and no other tweets before about this matter by Ms. Richards.
But I insist that is just a tweet/rumor, and after what we have seen in the last week I will believe only to the statements coming from Yuzuru or members of his team, if not officially from JSF.

It's less than a week until Nationals. I think it's safe to say that Yuzuru will withdraw, if he isn't back in Japan by now. As far as I remember the teams for Olympics, Worlds and 4CC are announced at the same time, shortly after Nationals are over. So at that point we will probably also know if Yuzuru is going to 4CC. It's possible that he will be chosen for 4CC and then later won't go, because that variation is safe. If they decide on a team sans-Yuzuru for 4CC they cannot renounce that, if Yuzuru decides he wants to go after all. So other than Olympics (which is Yuzuru/Shoma/SkaterX) I'm more interested in the 4CC lineup. I could even imagine Shoma going to 4CC.

Worrying is the lack of training. I'm sure the professionals that work with Yuzuru have the right idea, and know how to handle these injuries, but I wonder if he can really train a 100% and concentrate on his quads or if that's too risky, considering the injury could get worse again?

I don't know whether it is true or not but didn't Yuzu say a few days ago that he would be getting back on the ice
soon just stroking and testing the ankle (paraphrasing here).

No , Yuzuru didnt.

There are no new Hanyu’s videos after his NHK WD, we only know what JSF says Hanyu told them, so nothing directly from him.

On December 14 JSF informed Hanyu told them he didn't know when he would start training on the ice.

Yude translated it in Yuzuru’s Fan fest thread.

Yes, this tweet is in line with the first announcement of Kobayshi (JSF), and the person does seem someone canadian (or living there) who said she saw him on the ice. So it seems trustworthy. This makes the situation look less tragic than some news we read in the last days. The WD is anyway clear and, as also others said before, we will know soon about this and the teams for the international comps in new year.
Knock on wood that the rehabilitation will go well, so that we can see him skating soon too.

Thanks so many things being reported as truth. I don't know what to believe.

JSF explains that the announcement of JSF is the comment of YUZURU's mail itself. In any case, the National is coming soon. So there are formal explanations about the situation.

What comes from the Japanese Skating Federation comes from Yuzuru directly. If he doesn't hold a press conference and people don't see him say something, they don't believe it? Yes, there might be rumours from newspapers, but Yoshiko Kobayashi won't release some 'hearsay' wish-wash.
