2018 US Championships Sr Men FS

But the difference is that Polina was a young and exciting new up-and-comer with a lot of potential. Ross is hardly in the same situation. If anything, I think Vincent's position is more similar to Polina's.

My comment was referring to Mirai and Ashley circa 2014 and the mess that followed.

Any Lorde fans here?? "And the terror and the horror oh I wonder why we bother..all the glamour and the trauma and fcking melodrama whoa" my personal theme song for this US nationals... SO MUCH DRAMA

I don’t envy Adam Rippon and the insane fallout from psychos that will result if he is named to the Olympic team. Ashley Wagner, a 2013 Worlds top 5 finisher and 2013-2014 season Grand Prix Final bronze medalist, was crucified at the stake for being named to the team instead of a very inconsistent Mirai Nagasu in 2014. Rippon was not at Worlds last season and he has no GPF medal, so he may not be the shoo-in for “body of work” criteria that Wagner was considered to have in 2014.

Then what would you do next month? You not joining us eating snacks and watching Olympics on questionable-legality streams and argue with each other later on in the comments? What better things you need to do in life? Come and join us.

This will be my first time I'll be able to enjoy with you guys during the Olympics. I became a fan of skating during Sochi 2014. But I didn't join the forum until July 2014 and didn't post until like August 2014. Maybe late July, I don't know.

This result is exactly like the women’s result. I wanted all 4 of the ladies on the podium to go and I want all 4 men on the podium to go.

Depends how bad they want that Team Gold. If they want it bad, they'll make Chen skate both programs.

But how good are their chances with the Japanese, the Russians and the Canadians... Nathan would almost definitely take his portion but if it affected his individual skates and the rest of the team wasn't able to lock it, they'd lose out pretty big time.

Just a personal sidenote: I think it speaks for you that it has been 51 years and you are still a fan. Too many success fans running around in sports these days.

The Leafs are a cult which you are indoctrinated into so that they can consistently make some of the most money while delivering the above (says I, a member of said cult).

Yep. Don’t hate us cuz you ain’t us!

I’ve never been able to afford home game tickets. :(

Disclaimer: I’m also only 34, so their losing streak extends beyond my lifetime.

Ok imma stop thread derailment now.

Only her biggest fan ever. Jason's camp be like, "we're a trainwreck waiting to happen." Sad :/

I can't help but thinking that had the judges put miner just a point lower
(behind Zhao) than this would've been a more obvious choice

You can't not send the 2nd place finisher...

I would not send him. Last year he finished 9th and 12th in his GP assignments. This year he was 6th and 6th in his GP assignments. Nathan, Adam, and Jason all made the GPF. He had a wonderful skate and I am happy for him. But if we are sending our best to the Olympics, I would not send Ross Miner. If it's just to reward how they skate at nationals I guess then send him. But Ross Miner is not going to do anything at the Olympics.

Was going to try to catch up on the comments before writing my own, but it's moving too fast!

If we thought the skating gods had provided the maximum drama last night, we were sweet summer children then, weren't we?

Don't envy the selection committee at all. Or maybe I do. It'd be nice to have that power!

Anyway, the obvious first. Nathan is going. I'm not even really sure why people say he doesn't have artistry. Maybe not at first, but I'm always engaged with his performances, even when they're not his best. And who couldn't love how even though he's sick and supposedly watering it down, he just threw 5 quads all casual like? I'm sure, being just a fan and not someone who has ever been a figure skater there are some nuances I'm missing, but I still think he's better than some are giving him credit for. Love him!

Jason and Grant are out. Grant just had the one moment of greatness in the short. Nowhere near enough. Jason and Adam both can't go on a body of work argument and Jason hasn't been performing this season at all. With a six place finish, there's no justification for sending him to the Olympics this year. I love his skating, but he just didn't earn it this time.

The hard question is, who gets left out between Adam, Ross and Vincent? How can you leave out the silver medalist when there are three spots? How can you leave out some out someone who can throw 5 quads? How can you leave out a gorgeous skater who had a fantastic Grand Prix season despite coming back from injury and not doing as much difficulty as the other top men? Particularly if flash photography might have been a factor. In my sport, diving, judges will sometimes award do-overs if a diver messes up because of flash photography or another major distraction. If it was indeed a factor, that shouldn't be held against Adam.

Ultimately my pick for the team has to be Nathan, Adam, Ross. Adam is more of a 2014 Ashley Wagner than a 2018 Wagner. The body of work argument is truly legit here. Vincent has some great potential too, but I just don't see how the 2nd place finisher can be screwed out of a spot on the team. I do think that Vincent should go to 4ccs and Worlds this year to get some more international experience though.

Honestly, that makes so much sense. US Nationals, sponsored by Lorde.

Also, that reminds me...
When am I getting my ice dance program to Glory and Gore?

Um, if they had sent Vincent to Worlds in 2017, he would have had the "body of work". Kind of unfair. :scratch2:

Rippon's performance was a disaster and he showed that he crumbles under pressure. Vincent was visibly nervous but held it together rather well. I second sending Vincent.

I don't think Adam crumbled under pressure. He missed the 4Lz, but recovered very well. It wasn't until the end that disaster struck. I'm more likely to think the 3s was rushed due to loss of focus or excitement. I don't think the 3S was missed because Adam crumbled under pressure.

People like Adam a lot more than Ashley, and people also really liked Mirai.

Aaaaand I'm dead. I think I may have burned some calories just by laughter alone tonight. Probably enough to cancel out 2 lime &a jalapeño seasoned tortilla chips. 2 out of the 20.

I suppose. Maybe if Ovechkin would fix his teeth and stop getting the PeeWee Herman haircut, they’d stand a chance.

I mean, the Cubs won the world series after 108 years, maybe we can still have hope for our favourite losers too.

I feel more like that DC sports need an exorcism and the Nats, Caps, Wizards, and maybe Redskins (Honestly I don't really care for the Redskins) hire a sports psychologist and someone to perform meditation during playoffs, then it could work. Or if I perform a dance I created to rid bad omens.

But how good are their chances with the Japanese, the Russians and the Canadians... Nathan would almost definitely take his portion but if it affected his individual skates and the rest of the team wasn't able to lock it, they'd lose out pretty big time.

Japan has zero chance of a team podium finish.

I agree. Adam had no quad. No one should go to the Olympics without a quad.
I am guessing you mean a consistent quad? Thankfully there are still other elements the judges consider besides number of jump rotations. Do not get me wrong. I do not have any opinion about which skater should be chosen over another. But if you remember the last Olympics, even an amazing skater like Hanyu falls sometimes. Yes, I know he won. But I think that is because his programs demonstrate skills beyond excellent jumps.
