2018 Olympic Season: Ice Dance

Oh ... I completely forgot that the European Championships are in Russia. It can help them and I don't mean it in any shady way.

Yep that's why we're all thinking that actually, minus the fact that their scores get higher and higher, they almost beat B/S on the SD at Russian Nationals. So who knows

But I wonder if after what happened with the BR judge in Zagreb, the marks in Europeans will not be so will for Russian skaters.

Worlds in Russia meant all North American podium so doubtful there’s any benefit 7 years later when Russia is much more focused on ladies and trying to get pairs in order and have let the dance program collapse to nothingness.

1.Virtue/Moir 209.82
2.Gilles/Poirier 192.08
3.Weaver/Poje 191.09
4.Soucisse/Firus 180.73
5.Arnold/Williams 158.53

A bit of personnal opinion : Go watch Arnold/Williams FD, it is really nice, very mature skating.

I much prefer Sales & Wamsteeker's Robin Hood FD over A&W's generic soft program. I like Thomas, but not this program. S&W have such a nice change of pace & upbeat switch in the middle of their FD. I will remember it.

What in the world is going on with Weaver/Poje? I've always liked this team--they're so elegant, tall and polished on the ice.

Among other things, they went with Morozov, Andrew can not to do twizzles and she was recently injured.

Haha, that summary  Yes they are very elegant. I think Andrew struggle with twizzles mentally :noshake:
And frankly, I think that not winning Worlds and the V/M comeback put a weight on them. But it's my opinion.

Champions don't think like that. Real champions are spurred on by competition, Exhibit A, H/D.

Yeah, when W/P didn't do well during last seasons GPs, it was because they got a new coach. Well V/M got a coach and started competing again after 2.5 years.

Hubbell & Donohue have been chasing all season. They have never felt the pressure to win a World Championship or lead their National team. Much less defend a World medal. That's another step.

Weaver & Poje have two World medals and led the Canadian team for multiple seasons. They felt all of that pressure for two years.

I think, unfortunately, that they overreacted to a tough loss in Boston in a very well skated event. Wish they had stayed with Krylova & Camerlengo. (I mean, seriously, it's obvious they didn't get a better Olympic FD from Morozov). But you move forward. W&P have given us several gorgeous performances this season, and they are not out of the medal hunt by any means. More importantly, they continue to work through disappointments. I give the Shibs, Weaver & Poje, Bobrova & Soloviev, Chock & Bates, Cappellini & Lanotte, and Hubbell & Donohue a LOT of credit for the journeys they have taken over the past few years. They don't give up. They've all had rough skates. They've all taken losses. But they keep proving--time & time again--that they cannot be dismissed.

I like what Kaithlyn and Andrew have been putting out this year a bit more than with their old coaches. Can't really say that the new choreography is mindblowing but there seems to be more dimension to their skating.

Perhaps it's just me - but is anyone else very disappointed with the ice dance programs this season? All of the movements strike me as rather overdetermined? I don't mean there is no nuance or detail to the movements. I mean that the music seems to dictate the motions precisely. There is no ambiguity, nothing that defies expectations, nothing that challenges the imagination. And yes, I mean that for the beloved Virtue-Moir & Papadakis-Cizeron also, as lovely as both of them are.

You're not the only one. However, it's somewhat understandable for skaters to go conservative in an Olympic season, so many recycle their programs or choose a safe and easy route in music and choreography.

Yeah, they seem to put all their energies and creativity into the SD, but there's not much room for that in the FD. All the teams seem to be playing safe with probably V/M and G/P the only two teams really putting themselves out there. It's just what it is unfortunately.

Euh??? Playing safe?? I prefer to take this as a joke.
All teams go for the best of their last 3 seasons experience which exactly what we expect from them.
As for V/M, I am amused to read they take some risks  The truth is that Moulin Rouge does not work well and needed to be reworked but to present this in a positive way came this story of "taking risks"! And I am not that convinced about the modified version of MR.
