And, yes, this team does a fantastic job preparing juniors, building up strong mentality in them. Yes, they always manage to make a glorious senior debut for their girls. But I feel they don’t know what to do afterwards (?)
I think the main issue is that Med did not upgrade her BV while she could. If she upgradged her BV last season, she might be less consistent but this season she might have been used to the harder layout. Now it is too late to change anything. She just has to skate light out and the rest is on the judges. From Twitter
I am afraid, I agree. In all the interviews about the junior stars (Trusova, Kostornaia, Scherbakova etc) they constantly comment on their plans for the future - adding a 3A, quads, inventing new spin positions. Whereas they don't tell us any thing about their plans on Medvedeva. Last season she expressed the intention on learning a 4S, but she is not a junior any more, jumps already appear to be harder for her, since her body has changed so much in the last 1,5 years. So, I don't really see that ever coming. The same applies for Zagitova - she is now young, shiny, hitting the jumps. But where would she be in a couple of seasons? At the time the juniors become seniors, she wouldn't be able to get a harder layout neither.
I still have the feeling that Zhenya peaked last season, which really makes me sad because it had to be now. I know many people hated her free skate, but I adored both programs. When I watched her free from Boston WC, I thought that the W.E. program would be the best ever. And choreographically wise it still is, but when I compare her extensions, positions etc to those from last season - she has shown a huuuuge improvement, it is even unbelievable. I believe that even if they stayed with the old layout from last season, she would have improved even more. Many people insist on backloading because of the TES gap compared to Zagitova. But if she concentrated on getting the maximum of everything she is already doing, I am sure she could have it easier and would be the Olympic favourite.
