2017-18 State of U.S. Ladies Skating

Apparently, Bradie and Mirai were looking good in practice yesterday. They even did SBS 3S together at the end of practice. Sounds like their having fun.

Like, they did side by side jumps on purpose (they didn't just happen to be close to each other)? That's so cute!

She also said this is the first time her father will come to see her in competition. He closed the restaurant for the first time to see his daughter skate. How sweet!

It's been such a hard four years for her. This time has to feel so good for her. I hope they all have a fun and skate free.

I think 2018 OWG will be only the second time for Mirai's father to see her compete. Super-touching :sad4: and super-exciting :yay:.

(Mirai's parents did make it to Vancouver to see her skate in 2010. But it was/is extremely poignant to me that her father has never been able to see her compete at Nationals over her many years there.)

By the way, USA Today has a great little video of Mirai's father making the "Olympic Roll" that he invented for the sushi menu at the restaurant.

The video also is embedded (scroll down) within this USA Today article that focuses on her parents:
LOL, another sushi roll from her father is none other than the Mirai Roll.

(BTW, the local NBC station in Los Angeles also apparently produced a piece about Mirai's parents -- but I'm not sure whether it has aired yet. Have not been able to find it online.)

Meanwhile, a large (and lovely) photo of Mirai is above the fold on the front page of the hard-copy sports section of today's USA Today.

And on Page 3 of the USA Today sports section is a Christine Brennan article -- "Nagasu's good ol' leap of faith pays off" -- but it does not seem to be online yet.

I hope she skates that well in competition. She really looks good.

She does; I watched the video. And I was reminded of watching her first practice at SA. My first thought was, "Bradie's here to skate."

How’s Karen doing??? Oh, how I hope and pray she will be working on getting those jumps around!!!!! Remember, if she doesn’t get UR calls in the sp, her score could be 69+.

It is a big if but, we can't forget that she was 4th in the world just a year ago.

Yeah, it’s a big if. But I feel that the judges like Karen and would give her huge scores , but not while she’s UR like so. I say she doesn’t make the final group.

I'd be more concerned if Karen was skating in the team event FS in a few days, but the ladies event isn't for another two weeks. I wouldn't read too much into her practices yet.

Anything can happen.....remember Tara and Sarah's Olympic Gold (people didn't expect that) It's not over until it's over. Good luck to the girls.🤗

OMG Ashley's Olympic commercial ... Yaaaaasssssss! Gives me life.

Me too! I totally  the focus on something besides winning, and how beautiful and graceful it can be to rise again after a big crash.

Plus, the whole thing is so beautifully photographed and thoughtful.

Well, after Nathan's subpar beginning, I am hoping Bradie can lift the team back up with a strong SP.

The team is still in good shape. The pairs overperformed and made up the points Nathan lost. Bradie really can’t get higher than 5th, so she should just focus on having a good time.

After the way the men skated I think Bradie could do well if she stays on her feet. Thank goodness for pairs and dance....

Sure she could. I think 5th is likely where she would end up, but that's assuming the better skaters will be clean. I don't think many of us picked Bychenko to finish 2nd in the men's SP, but that's what happened.

Men’s is always unpredictable. Bradie, OTOH has a SB of 67. Even if Kaetlyn doubles her combo, she would beat her. Satoko got a 71 with an underrotation call. Carolina got a 72 with a weak SP. plus Bradie is in group one. My guess is she’ll score 68-70 clean.

The focus for her is just going clean. If she goes clean in the SP, they’ll boost her PCS in the individual round.

Bradie the US champion will get better marks than Bradie whom nobody has heard of, so I don't think her previous SB is indicative of her potential score. She executes her elements well and actually has a good amount of choreography and transitions, which judges might have looked passed before because of the safe music choices. You could be right and her ceiling could be 67, but if the USFSA is pushing her as the top US women, she should be getting better marks.
