2018 Olympic Figure Skating Pairs FS

Well, I'm thoroughly unhappy with this result. I wanted Sui/Han to win and Tarasova/Morozov and Duhamel/Radford on the podium alongside them.

I'm sure all those people who were happily spewing such venomous hatred at Tarasova/Morozov last night are busily glorying in their misfortune...

You know to be honest, I am not THRILLED either, as a hardcore Russian fan, I am absolutely devastated for evgeniya and Vladimir but what happened has happened and we need to move on. They need to move on too, to achieve even greater things in Beijing 2022, that is, if they plan on sticking around for another four years
But, honestly speaking, Savchenko deserves her gold, Aljona and Bruno’s program was magnificent and they deserve it. What a moment for Aljona, after 5 olympics, she finally gets her gold. We should be happy for them and support evgeniya and Vladimir and Russian skating too of course. But anyway, just my two cents.

Yesterday I really felt with Bruno. It was hard enough for him to be the only top-contender who made a mistake (that event was mindblowing.) But the press had to put the boot in: "Bruno destroyed Aljonas dream." "Massot let gold slip."

I broke out in tears after that free skate. Not only because of queen Aliona but Bruno, too. They deserved this medal as a team. Both got better because of each other and they created my all time favorite free skate in the pairs' event. Thank you, Aljona and Bruno!!! :hap93:

I just watched the event and I am beyond thrilled. I still can't believe it all went the way it did. Stuff from a fairy tale, truly.

I actually CRIED. I don't think I've ever cried watching skating before.

That's literally one gold medal I needed to see happen at this Olympics and after yesterday, I didn't think I would.

Congratulations to all medalists! Sui/Han and Tarasova/Morozov are still young and I am sure they will be fighting for gold again in four years time.

Just watched the last 4 pairs in the final group.

While S/M and D/R were placed higher in FS, I feel S/H and T/M skated more 'instinctually' and 'naturally'. S/H and T/M were faster and at times as fast as single skaters. But they did make significant mistakes in jumps and throws.

Watching them in sequence, seeing the beautiful costumes in the first 3 teams and suddenly T/M appeared with black and yellow with black polka dots does make it a bit jarring and the music was a bit cheesy but I don't think the hate should come from that. Singles skaters have worse costumes and worse music but they are still judged on their elements and execution.

You would think that after bizarre scheduling (that sacrifices Europe, Asia and skaters themselves) to suit American TV audience they would actually bother to show competition extensively. I guess not.

Both Savchenko and Massot are naturalized citizens of Germany.

Savchenko is from Ukraine and initially skated with Morozov but did not get much support from her country of origin.

She then teamed up with Szolkowy from Germany, but then there was some political stuff with their coach and Szolkowy was asked the leave the army and have no financial support. But they recovered from that.

And then she teamed up with Massot and there's the kerfuffle with the French Figure Skating Federation.

What a long journey, lots of twists and turns.

Well Germany was very supportive of both of them.

This is from Savchenko's wiki when she was with Szolkowy. This should be the Worlds that was postponed by the Japanese tsunami.

Their training ice was scheduled to be melted in late March, after they would normally have left for the World Championships, however, the competition was postponed to late April. They were able to get their ice time extended until Easter, with the city and sport association negotiating the finances.

Maldita, fell asleep during the break and missed most of the best part. Woke up just in time to see S/H's score and T/M messing up their skate, drowsily watching like: Wait what just HAPPENED?!?!?! Then went back to sleep in a disbelieving and utterly confused state.
Off to see what the hell was up with that second half.

I used to think the Russian girls were the toughest competitors. Changed my mind today. I think Aljona Savchenko and Meagan Duhamel are possibly the most badass pair lady skaters who defied all odds and medalled just by sheer grit. Aljona skated like her life depended on it and Meagan simply threw everything she had on the ice. It is clear these two ladies were far more stubborn and badass than their male partners. They rock.

I didnt want to see the results before watching FS videos, but I couldnt help it and I m literally crying from happiness! So long awaited and well deserved gold medal! They turned to be the best games so far! <3

O.57 is a very small margin to win gold. Im sure if Sui/ Han were the European ones the judges would have made that margin in their flavor instead. I bet they have tweaked their marks to ensure they would be behind the Germans. Also its ridiculous that the German pcs are better than Sui/ Han. The Germans connection and chemistry is as authentic as Evgenia Medvedeva miming. Its incomparable to Sui/ Han genuine connection with each other. I think the Germans are two beautiful skaters but their connection is so forced and fake, not surprising especially when you see the difference between them off ice. People talk about the emotion of their program. I mean, compare that with Sui/Han Bridge over troubled water, its so inferior.

I would like to also give shout-out to Duhamel, Radford I have never seen they skated more beautifully with so much emotion like they did tonight.

I watched them live in 2011 and I don't like their style but now all I can say is : Wowww!

And people seem to forget that nothing is certain in life, who knows with the upcoming crop of Russian pairs if T/M can keep up?

This could have been their only shot and to say they deserved better music if they were going to win will be neither here nor there.

They'll be 27 and 29 in 2022, that's old for figure skaters even pairs skaters

Today’s podium shows it is not old at all. Aliona, Megan, and Eric are all in their thirties. Anyway, I don’t think criticizing a program is in anyway inappropriate. It wasn’t just that they chose this song. It is that they were never committed to the performance because it did not suit them.

Anyway, it was not the program that lost them a medal. It was their errors. You can’t blame others for that. They have to learn how to handle their nerves.

In addition, I have seen the young Russian pairs and I was not impressed. None of them are close to T/M. They should be fine for four more years. ( barring injury)

Convenient how the judging is done so that S/M just BARELY got the gold. After that short, even with Sui/Han's errors, I would have given it to S/H...

Of course Pang/ Tong wouldn't say anything. Any other country commentator of their own skaters losing on that oh so convenient margin of win for the Germans would have said something. They're not egoistic like the Americans commentators who tear down their opponents no matter what. Sui/ Han had a 6 pts margin after SP over them and if it weren't for politics it would have been enough to keep them the gold. It's no accident that the Germans marginally won the gold.
