2018 Olympic Figure Skating Mens SP

The media sounds like a piece of cake when you have Eteri watching you everyday.

Seriously, I think they do a better job of replicating the pressure of competitions every day.

I almost feel like the russian skaters have a similar attitude to the karolyis in gymnastics - with the whole "next one up attitude" if one falters. Russian girls are great, but I don't like it so much when we get these one hit wonders like Arakawaa, or Sarah Hughes or even Tara who basically had one hit or else were like Tara and were dominant for a season or two then disappear. That's what's been going on with the russian ladies, though EM is to some extent an exception in that she has lasted for a good 3 seasons.

Hanyu's performance was really a great olympic moment for japan in general since i know he is so loved there. I wonder what the skate order will be for long. I don't think Nathan would have done as bad (though i still think he would be off and not win a medal) if he had skated first before hanyu. He never had to deal with the whole stadium erupting over a skater with such a high score. Its concerning he place 6th at worlds too since it indicates a pattern where someone can't perform under pressure. For some of the people who choked like Mao it was more an anomly and they won world titles and even for her an olympic medal before an episode when they did not do as well. But except for GPF we have not seen Nathan compete head to head with everyone and win. And even there he was not facing Hanyu or Javi. He's never beaten them head to head with everyone all in one competition. Much like Carolina in Torino and Chan in Vancouver, the expectations by the media did not fit in with reality - Mao or Hanyu and Yuna deserved to be hyped but nothing that Nathan really did indicated he should have been hyped as much as he was.

It's funny that Tara and Johnny are still talking about how it was supposed to be between Nathan and Yuzuru.. I highly doubt that he would have placed higher than Javier even if he skated clean.

So NBC put their hype and attention on Adam their next victim now? For Adam to pull a Mirai miracle, he has to do a 4A or all other quads, something few or no Men can do.

Boyand is unlikely to snatch the gold this year, but by 2022??? Ahahaha, what am I saying, it's completely impossible to predict anything in Men's Figure Skating.

2022 gold for Boyang is entirely possible. His PCS is slowly but surely rising by 0.5 point per competition (in the SP). And he still has 4Lo to acquire.

A few notes.

1. Yuzuru Hanyu really is GOAT. He can come back from injury and do the perfect program. It was beautiful. Absolutely, beautiful. I do worry that he may not have the stamina for the long program . Jackie Wong of rockerskating has noted all week that his short program practices were good but errors keep creeping in for the long. However, mental strength is often superior to physical strength and he has all the mental strength in the world. So many people were counting him out due to injury but I always thought he could will his way to greatness.
2. Javier Fernandez: Wonderful entertaining skate. I think that his Quads are often some of the best executed lovely height and control. I think he may actually come away from this with a Gold medal because I think he has the physical stamina that Yuzuru might lack and he likes coming back from behind.

Fernandez's LP practices haven't been that hot either.

They can say whatever they want, Especially now the they don't need to back it up ;)

I'm dissapointed with judges. When they shouldn't they go flat out with inflated scores.

Today they had moment when they should have went crazy with score, and they were stingy with Hanyu score

I thought the scoring was pretty spot-on for this event.
The "going crazy" with inflated scores can only lead to an anti-climatic free-skate. There is never a "right" time for judges to do that, and it shouldn't be done.
Here, everyone has just about the right gap relative to the others; the position that they earned is clearly established and quite fair, while at the same time it still remains very much a real competition for all of the top 5 -- as it should be, since all performed to the top standard.
Yuzuru should have the clear lead, as he does, but should not have any huge gap allowing for an easy victory with a sloppy LP. Perfect.

I feel for Brian orser tomorrow night - he's likely to get both a wonderful golden moment as well as someone heartbroken, perhaps getting the silver like he had. But I guess no one is better equipped to handle it. Stamin may be an issue for hanyu but you can just tell that both hanyu, javi, shoma and boliang are really in a good mental state. Nathan seemed totally off in team event interviews this week - very sad, like he was going over and over his program. They said he went right from short program in team to the ice. That's maybe not a healthy attitude. Ex Soviet coaches probably aren't for him.

Random Thoughts:

Brendan Kerry: My skating crush went clean, so I'm happy about that. I would've scored it higher, but I know I'm crazy biased.

Hanyu / Fernandez : All great and nice. Fantastic to see Hanyu and Fernandez perform so well - but it was rather stale for me. I've seen all this before from them multiple times over multiple seasons done better - it lacks freshness and vitality.

Uno: Those landings scare me, but I like his presence. Cute costume.

Aliev: Loved it. I think the costume is hokey but he did great.

Kolyada: Gutted. I'd like to see it come together for him. He could be phenomenal if he was just less tight.

Chen: Absolutely gutted. What happened? He has the best SP of the elite competitors - and it's not close - and it's so sad that he just performed that poorly. Raf managed him badly (again unless there is an unknown injury)

Yan: Gutted again. Like Kolyada, I want him to have his moment.

Cha: Wow. I liked this so much!
