2018 Olympic Figure Skating Mens SP

I wonder how much of the hype about nathan was based on the cute video of him skating when he was young and interview with andrea joyce. Davis and White were a big shoo in for gold, yet they did not hype them like that, and while the Shibs are a dark horse for gold, they could have made that into a narrative making it out to be that the 3 teams battle. Except for that video, and winning things this year in a trucated field with injured skaters and javi not being at his best, nathan's "story" was not that compelling nor was it much different than some of the ice dancings in the past few olympics. most similar to patrick chan in the vancouver olympics - he was too early.

Rewatching his SP You can see Aliev not being able
to stop his hand from shaking in the starting position

This makes me appreciate him even more :agree:

I can't believe it, out of all debutantes, it turned out to be Aliev who can breakthrough here. If not for the that bobble on the axel, he could have cracked 100 and would have tied with Jin/Uno.
I am so depressed for Chen, can he still close the gap and get on the podium?

I suspect Uno is the most vulnerable among the top 3. But who can replace him? Jin, Aliev or Chan?

I am so happy for many skaters right now. Hanyu, Fernandez, Uno, Aliev and Jin gave great performances. I loved Jin the most probably because Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is one of my favorite movies but I also think he is improving himself compared to 2 years ago. I really liked his step sequence. I don't know what to say about Kolyada so talented but soooo inconsistent :sad4:. I am rooting for everybody in the free.

Managed to convince myself to watch after last night of heartbreak. And all I've got to say is MICHAL BREZINA, my love :yahoo: :hap93:  (Seeing the scores for later groups he should have higher PCS!)

Other than that:
1. Super happy for:
a) Yuzuru. Simply marvelous. I worship your 3A
b) Javi. Another marvelous skate. Most engaging audience performance for me. Really hope to keep that up in FP!
c) Dima! 3 years ago, when I saw him at JGP I said Russia should send him to Olympics. Can't be happier it happened, because he proves so much it was right decision!
d) Han Yan's 3A got +3 GOE! So deserved! I agree with some anon on tumblr, the sexiest jump in whole FS :love:

2. Good to see:
a) Boyang and his marvelous 4Lz Combo. Way to go tiger!
b) Misha Kolyada's so, so very pretty 3A! I was devastated during Team Event it was not present in SP. Seriously, all I care is 3A. He skates so beautifully anyway, quads be damned, I liked his 3Lz got such positive GOE, even though it was essentially a pop
c) Jun Hwan slaying on his home ice!
d) Brendan skating so well! He made all Aussies happy.
e) Daniel landing those quads finally and qualifying to FS after horrible season.
f) Han Yan again, because he's my fav. That 80 points keeps him up in the game still for a good placement.

3. Sad to see:
a) Misha Kolyada having problems with 4T again. Ugh, I thought it would be only Lutz. And he jumps so beautifully...
b) Same with Hanee. Btw. I think his combo problem was that his 3Lz is sooo huge. And that only makes me love him more. But still, sad.
c) Denis Ten not making it to FS. Heartbreaking for Kazakhstani hero :(

4. Shocked to see: Nathan Chen! I like him the most out of Team USA, so of course he had to do the worst :slink: I guess media pressure and skating after Yuzuru made it really bad for his nerves...

Others: I either don't care or have nothing nice to say.
Anyway, thank you for all the pretty 3A's tonight!

ETA: Ah, and I forgot, but am I right that TAT screamed so loud during Dima skate that I could hear it while watching ESP? xD

Why do you like the movie? The main character, Jen the young girl, was sly and conniving. She stole the green sword, cheated and cut Michelle Yeoh, betrayed her illiterate teacher just for the fun of it.

Even if that would be a correct interpretation of (one of) the main characters, that's a reason to dislike the movie, why? Its visuals are one of a kind, the music is haunting, the martial art scenes stunning, and I could go on.....

If ice dances does not pull through this will be the first olympics I think in which USA does not have an individual olympic medal. Did not happen in pairs and very unlikely now in men's or ladies. Probably Mirai is best hope in ladies if it's a splatfast and she skates like she did in team, but that's doubtful.

I don't think there's enough for nathan to pull through for bronze or adam even unless some other people fall like nathan did. Unlikely to happen with those top 4 men at least.

The Academy liked it too

I loved the story about the unfulfilled love of Shu Lien and Li Mu Bai, I kind of liked the way I hated Jen, it was the first time that I saw those dreamlike fighting scenes and the score of the music was really good. I was 18 years at the time and it was my first Asian movie. I have seen way better movies since but I love CTHD in a nostalgic way.

Aliev achieved PCS 42 in SP translates to 84 in FS while Hanyu and Javier both can achieve 97 on PCS in FS. So the modus operandi would not work for the OGM

However, (insert lightning and thunder) as for the OBM …..

If he skates cleanly, he'll get more than 84:
1) he'll be in the last group;
2) his free skate is better than the short, exquisite music and a really nice contemporary feeling;

I'm totally ready to get behind Aliev, he gives me all the good Yagudin vibes tbh, I just hope he improved his stamina between now and the Europeans and that he keeps it together in the free.

Fingers crossed for clean skates from everyone though and may the best man win!

Ah, and big shout-out to all the nice coaches in the arena last night, Brian Orser, Mihoko Higuchi and Evgeni Rukavicin all deserve medals for being wonderful human beings.

Just got the news on the Aliev interview thread that Aliev will maintain his FS layout with two 4T and no 4Lz as the Europeans. With a program that has only two quads, it will be slimmer chance to be on the podium.

I liked the movie too but the love story of Shu Lien and Li Mu Bai is as tragic as Miss Kenton and Stevens in Remains of the Day.

Maybe the big guns and top male skaters won't show up to this years World Championships and Nathan will win gold there just like he has all season.:slink:

His PCS here was 0.35 points lower than at Euros, no boost there. I expect that now with Kolyada out of picture his PCS will jump, that's if he skates clean, by about a point but no more than that. At Euros he got 87.44, so that would put him around 89. And if he really nails it, about 90 tops. Given that at Euros he nailed all his planned content, exactly the same as it planned here, he got 95 TES. His maximum scoring potential in the Free is 185 points. Unless they change the plan and replace one of the planned 4T with 4Lz.

I don't think that would be enough to medal unless two out of top 4 really bomb and that is doubtful. But you never know.....
His odds of medaling are not very good BUT finishing 4th or even 5th is huge accomplishment and sets the stage for the next Olympic cycle nicely.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is a masterpiece. :roll5:

Lol, they just never fail do they? When our badminton team did not get OGM they be like "Athletes crumbled/failed". On one hand tho, i'm grateful that we all are happy for Juju as a country. The same cannot be said for Michael. Poor boy, everyone's bashing him according to what a Filipino friend is telling me.
Not really. The bashing was for Lee Chong Wei cos he failed in his 3rd attempt.
The mixed doubles silver was celebrated as it was unexpected, beating China enroute to finals which CPS/GLY hardly ever do. 1st ever silver for mixed category

Why would they bash Martinez? He is the last minute replacement, no time to prepare.
