2018 Olympic Figure Skating Mens SP

Posting here too!

I wonder if Yuzu will go for the 4Lo and 5 quads program or not!

- He's got a 4 pt lead over Javi, who only has 2 quads in his program
- He's got a 7 pt lead over Shoma, who has 4 quads in his program
- He's got an 8 pt lead over Boyang, who has 4 quads in his program

The real quads threat was Nathan, but he's out of the race.

I think the tabloids just *assumed* that MCM retired. He NEVER announced that he intended to end his career.
Per that article I posted, it actually quoted him as saying "I'm done... I retired." It may have been an informal retirement but that was the decision. You don't formally announce your retirement if you don't think people will care. Who would he announce it to? Most Filipinos don't even know his name, and the figure skating community in general wouldn't really care too much since he's not a top skater. All he needs to do to "retire" is just drop out from the scene.

It may not have been a wise decision, but I feel he lost motivation. He had been told a few weeks before that it isn't happening and all the countries had confirmed their slots. Even previously, he was well aware that without a quad, and being from the country he's from, he's unlikely to get anywhere. Again, it's been an uphill battle. Figure skating is a difficult sport as it is, try doing it with very little support from anywhere, coming from a country with no snow, which struggles with bigger problems, and coming also from a non-figure skating family. I had wondered before what motivates the lower-tier skaters to continue on with this difficult and expensive sport, so it's not surprising that they lose motivation.

Makes me recall the discussion on the team event, how it's biased towards certain countries. News flash: Figure skating itself is biased towards certain countries. How often do you get medalists from countries without winter? Or less well-off countries where figure skating is an impractical sport? This is another reason why Denis Ten is someone to admire. And also part of the reason why I'm now heartbroken that he didn't make the free skate.

Well, that became quite long.

And to the person who apologized that they like Shoma and want him to medal, don't apologize for liking anyone. We like whom we like because we like them, you don't need to apologize for it. You don't need to justify it or have a reason for it. Figure skating is a sport, and also an art- and which art you prefer is a personal calling. Which skater you like is personal and emotional, and there is no right or wrong answer. You shouldn't let anyone influence you in your decision.

Woke up this morning and i looked at the results: no Nathan Chen, i was thinking "what happened? maybe he WD" and nope, found him later, he bombed the SP: shocking to say the least (he was my pick for the gold medal).

I can see him still skating a clean FS and with all the quads he has, surely he will finish in the top 10, maybe even top 5, but man...

On the other hand wow at Aliev skating that well and even surprised to see Fernandez back on form (i was expecting him to bomb somehow, considering this has been an up and down season so far)

Does anyone have the link for Aliev's SP with TAT commentary? i imagine it was legendary.

Or he can take Javi’s place, I’m pretty sure he confirmed that he’ll be retiring.

I was very saddened to see \nathan's troublesand Chan. I blame it on Chanfor hispredicament andhis choices. Why didn't he beg and plead to work with Orser's group. It is sadder when you consider Brian is a two time olympic silver medallist. Here was Brian's chance to coach an OGM Canadian. Patrick despite all his struggles still has a glorious glide.

But Nathan who will come back but it may be hard to get ahead of the top 4 - they have at least over 20 pts on him so all of them imploding is unlikely. i am confident even bronze is not out of the equation -onlbecause of the scoring system.

Yes I saw that, but I wonder if he will actually do 4Lo or not since he might not need it! :)

I bet the 4Lo was a bluff.

Earlier Orser said: All quads except 4Lz are good.
A day later, Orser said: 4Lo is in progress.

And then 4Lo did not appear in SP as planned. So he might very well do two 4T and two 4S.

But then I read reports that 4Lo was landed nicely at practice. So….

I wondered about that 2-3 seasons ago. Patrick was at Colorado but he returned to Canada two seasons ago but with another coach.

May Orser did not want to coach him because of the added pressure being a Canadian coaching for a Canadian OGM knowing how good Yuzu and Javi are.

It may just be me, but I would have expected him to make some sorta formal announcement on his i instagram. It was kinda weird because it was out of nowhere? But still, I'm really holding out hope that MCM will not go just yet. I feel that he just need a proper support system (in terms of funding maybe).

I'm a dreamer. Yes.

May I just rant a tiny bit about how nobody gets a day break in competition except for the ladies? I don't get it, are men, pairs and ice dancers not deserving a break to recover?

How come they need to complete the SP/SD and FS/FD segment of each discipline before starting the next?
Tomorrow could have been the Short Dance and the day after be the Men's FS.

MCM is generally positive in his social media accounts and tries to keep it light. I don't think he would have announced his retirement there, especially if it came at a low moment.

Well, whatever happens, I wish him all the best. If he continues to skate, I admire him for that. If he decides to pursue another career which he can flourish in for the rest of his life, I will admire him still, and respect that decision. I'll miss him, his optimism, and his Biellman though.

The top 3 all looked a tiny bit disappointed at their scores in the KnC. The only one who showed real joy was Boyang Jin.

I think these scores are moderate, outside a few expections. I'm sure when Ladies comes around the Olympic Inflation will come alive.

Yup, preach. :rolleye:

Question to the really very old fans,

Was Brian Orser and Brian Boitano scrutinized as closely in proportionate to the media technology at those times in 1988, as compared to Nathan in 2018?

Huge hype. It was a great media opportunity. But both Brian's had the credentials and experience to back up the hype. Orser was a world champion, Olympic silver medalist and Boitano was a world champion. Both were in their mid 20's with multiple years of experience on the senior level. And they didn't disappoint. They were both great. But no.. the fluff pieces and photo ops are much much more over the top now.

I think NBC got desperate. They tried to force the Nathan Chen thing to happen and his jumps have been so hit and miss. When he's on he is on. I think the US media needed to do a better job of saying he is inconsistent but when on he will do well and that he is very new to the game. They also should have said what I think we all know: If Hanyu is clean he will win. If Fernandez is clean he will beat Nathan. Nathan is good. He is not on par with Javi or Yuzuru and it's wrong to tell an audience of casuals otherwise.

Boyang Jin was the only one who achieved a personal best.

What do you mean? Yuzu got almost a WR with 2 easier quads, Javi was near his PB with 2 easier quads as well. This meant +2 and +3 GOEs throughout. What expectations are we talking about?

What Olympic inflation do you think is going to come alive in ladies? Medvedeva 83+ in SP and Zagitova 160+ in FP? Anything below will be no inflation but their normal scores. Or you mean other skaters?

Your post was removed because it was off topic. Since this is the men's thread please do not talk about any of the ladies scoring here.

Thank you.

Really proud and impressed by Hanyu's mental toughness to come back from time off with injury. Very focussed and controlled andmastery to pull off those quads.

As for Nathan he will have no problem getting to fifth. His heart seemed to leave him part way and the passion and fight died out during the perrformance. Aliev is a time bomb - you just don't know what he will do. Chan is fading and quadless almost. Adam is quadless. Mikhail seems lost.

As much as i want to cry about a beautiful skater like Chan stuck in mediocrity and issues with jumps to see others like Ten and Han flounder alsobreaks my heart. I thought kerry was wonderful technically and good on him. i was impressed by keegan for holdingup as well as he didudner theolympic pressure. I amskepticalhe canhold on totenth. I assume Nam is practicing for worlds.

Zhou was rather blah but so talented and young. Cha wasimpressive technically but really artistically -someone to watch with Brian.Spain's second skater was a bitof a suprise tomenot because he was good orbad but \i thought there was another Javier. FErnandezwas smoot andofcourse he has thatpersonality but I found hisprogam rather blah - maybe because as much as i love him he l ike p/c in dance everything they dokind of looks the same.

Boyang has improved but needsto continue to develop the skating style and pcs but he is trying. i like Adam he is a performer much like the skater he probably replaced Jason but without the quads ...

I kind of might have Chan first in pcs then Rippon followed by Hanyu, Fernandez - i actually don't find Shoma that smooth on the ice. I thought skaterslike Yan andChahad some polish.

Japan and Fernandez look to be the podium. But ice is slippery. I don't think we will see a SM moment for Nathan though. Never know Fernandez, Aliev are more prone to bombing andwhoknowshow Hanyu will holdup in alonger program - i suspect he will be fine.
