2018 Worlds Ladies FS

Which does not change the fact that she is basic, boring, *in the personality free zone* and way less talented that any of her Russian or Japanese competition. :laugh2:

But yeah, a big federation finally gets their gold medal, the same way Chan got his back in 2013 after a questionable skate. :rofl:[/QU

Basically, you discount the opinion of anybody who doesn't agree with you (in this case, the general consensus) on the basis that they're improperly biased or misinformed.

Actually if you read the thread it is NOT general consensus that Osmond deserved to win the Long Program over Higuchi. Also, "discount" and "disagree" are different words. As for opinions though, they need to have reasoning and worthwhile viewpoint in order to be viable. Being a Canadian and thinking a Canadian deserved to win without any analysis whatsoever is basically a weightless opinion. You're offering nothing of value to talk about and nothing that supports your opinion.

Osmond is the first Canadian gold ladies medalist at Worlds in 45 years. So instead of a lame attempt to crash our party at this achievement, maybe given some credit where it's due.

What's lame is national bias and undeserved scores and medals. YOU should give credit where it's due, acknowledge that Osmond made several mistakes in this competition, and listen to arguments for why Higuchi deserved to beat her, instead of ignorantly refusing to acknowledge what actually happened in the competition. Celebrating something solely because of nationality is such a pointless and primitive thing to do. Who cares what country achieved what in the scope of a universal endeavor, everyone is a human and we all live in the same world. Imagine if you randomly chose a person out of the phone book whose last name starts with the same letter as yours and decided to become their fan and support them no matter what, solely for that reason. It would be nonsensical and so is nationalism to a large extent.

Forget Osmond being the first Canadian lady to "win" Worlds in 45 years, she is THE first lady to "win" whose last name starts with the letter O. Do you hear that everyone!?! The first champion ever to have a last name starting with O!!! Wow, OMG, this is an amazing historically relevant accomplishment and it totally validates what happened, since her last name starts with O! Get excited everyone, this totally matters!!

That is indeed an achievement! Everyone else in the top 5 have had their last initial-sharers win, before.

Oh my gaud, you are so funny. If you keep making these statements long enough, are you hoping that we are going to believe what you are saying. LOL....or who are you trying to convince. For sure not Kaetlyn because she don’t give a rats tail what you think....She enjoying her fame from her World Gold medal. That sounds so nice..🙂

Has there ever been a World Champion that was as basic as Kaetlyn?

She really doesn't bring anything new or interesting to the table.

She's just too basic for comfort. Had she been from a smaller federation, I doubt she would have been successful. But this is what you get, big federations pushing their skaters.

Which does not change the fact that she is basic, boring, *in the personality free zone* and way less talented that any of her Russian or Japanese competition. :laugh2:

Ah. Unintentional irony. Hilarious.

Actually if you read the thread it is NOT general consensus that Osmond deserved to win the Long Program over Higuchi.
You're pivoting away from what was being discussed, namely, that it's not just Canadians who think Osmond is a great skater. That's the general consensus I was referring to.

YOU should give credit where it's due, acknowledge that Osmond made several mistakes in this competition, and listen to arguments for why Higuchi deserved to beat her, instead of ignorantly refusing to acknowledge what actually happened in the competition.
She made fewer mistakes than Higuchi in the short program, and only one minor one in the long program.

But that's irrelevant, as you're free to prefer Higuchi. But that's different from arguing that Osmond was undeserving of winning and only did so because of politics.

Once again you dissemble, since the point of my noting that Osmond is the first winner from Canada in 45 years was to refute your spurious idea that there's some great swell of nefarious Canadian politicking behind Osmond's winning over Higuchi. Three different Japanese women have won the World Championship a combined total of six times in the 21st century; indeed, that's the most wins for any nation in this young century, narrowly ahead of Russia's five wins. The notion that Higuchi is disadvantaged because she's from Japan doesn't hold water in the slightest.

Almost beginning to feel sorry for the KO naysayers...not...we are having too much fun at their expense.

What ACTUALLY happened was that Osmond won.

Sure, YOUR opinion can be that she received "undeserved scores and medals".

However, the FACTS, which for some reason you seem to forget whenever you post; are once again, that Osmond won!

But just for fun...
3Flip+3Toe, +2 / good flip and toe, good flow out and nice distance covered
2Axel+3Toe<, -2 / good height/distance on the axel and toe, couldn’t check properly on the way out
3Lutz !, 0 / a big wonky on the landing and unclear edge, still high and flowing
CCoSp4 +1 / could be more stable
LSp4, +2 / beautifully centered, difficult entry, variety of positions
3Loop, +2 / footwork leading in/out, high fast, excellent landing, highlights music
3Flip, +1 / some leading steps in, fast, high, good landing
3Sal+2Toe+2Loop, +1 / reasonable flow on the exit
2A, +1 / transitions out, good flow
StSq4, +2 / movements are finished and match the music notes
ChSq, +2 / moves are held and finished, she pays attention to the details and matches the music and theme
CCoSp4, + 1/ well centered, but positions could be held longer
SS = 9.0
TR = 8.75
PE = 9.25
CO = 9.0
IN = 9.25
I get 147.52

The fact that he ignores that Higuchi made a significant error falling on her combo and a lip (giving Osmond a 7 point SP gap over her), and is inferior to Osmond on spins and steps just shows how biased he is.

I don't ignore Higuchi's fall in the SP at all, this is just you being ridiculous as usual, using straw-man arguments and putting words in my mouth. Higuchi didn't have a lip though, and she should not have been 7 points behind Osmond in the SP. YOU ignore that Osmond had a -3 GOE element and -1 GOE element in the SP. Those mistakes are essentially the same as a fall and her LP was more flawed in comparison.

You could give Higuchi 5 PCS higher in the FS and Osmond 5 PCS lower and the result would be the same.

You always make completely offbase statements like this. The GOE and tech calls also determine scores (where Osmond was massively overscored and received a wrong call), not just PCS, and I wouldn't have their PCS that far apart in relation to each other.

Instead I am just going to re-post the scores I gave to Osmond's performance. Try and debate me on actual assessments of what points were deserved for each skater, not your inane commentaries. I will also post the breakdown score for Higuchi if this conversation is capable of evolving beyond the stupid level it's at right now. On that note, if you fail to see the privileged advantage that some skaters received because of beneficial politics, then you truly need to evolve your perspective.

3Flip+3Toe, +1 / Good enough Flip jump, then smaller and barely rotated on the toeloop.
2Axel+3Toe<, -2 / Okay axel and then short on the toeloop with a stepout (and it visibly looked short in real time too, but I just assumed she barely made the 1/4 mark and the call was correct when I judged in real-time). This combo not receiving -2 across the board from the judges, in fact only receiving -1 total, just shows what a joke the scores are with the judges holding up "chosen" skaters.
3Lutz !, 0 / Good height but a slightly unsteady landing and questionable takeoff edge. Overall it's a wash.
CCoSp4 +1.5 / The opening sit spin position is underwhelming, but she does a very nice back camel with change of edge.
LSp4, +2 / Very good throughout, not the absolute best positions to deserve a +3 however.
3Loop, +2 / Very nice and perfectly clean with turning 3's entrance.
3Flip, +1 / It's fine, not at all the biggest she can do and no other great features.
3Sal+2Toe+2Loop, +1 / A fine execution, could be bigger and have more flow, the toeloop could be rotated better.
2A, +.5 / Not the biggest and a bit of tightness on the landing, because of lacking some rotation.
StSq4, +1 / She is constantly VERY overrated in her footwork, there is never a great degree of speed in the turns or fluidity between them. The usage of her arms is okay here and she has a couple nice leg lines, but this seriously is not that special.
ChSq, +1 / A "greatest hits" collection of moves, except none of them are special, although the musical timing is okay (aside from the spiral which is kind of wasted). A split jump without great extension or toepoint, a brief spiral without great extension, an ina bauer and spread eagle that superficially hit the beat of the music but fail to create a grand enough moment because the expression and duration are not far enough beyond being perfunctory (the spread eagle is the best moment of the sequence and hints at being great but doesn't quite get there).
CCoSp4, +1.5 / This is the most generous I could possibly be, a full +2 is certainly not deserved. The positions can all be better and the speed is far from the best, but it's relatively fluid throughout.

Add that all up and it would give a technical score of 67.07. Then for the PCS an average of low 8's is certainly the highest I would possibly go for a relatively lackluster program this (let's say 8.75 for skating skills, 8.5 transitions, 8.25 performance, 8.0 choreography and interpretation), which would be a total of 66.4 on the second mark. This would give her a total score of 133.47.

My secret wish came true. Congratulations to Kaetlyn on winning gold! :yahoo::hap10::clap::yay::hap10: I’m so proud of her for keeping her composure and putting out that wonderful performance in this tough post-Olys Worlds. I love her power and speed, her her big bold beautiful jumps, her mature, radiant presence on the ice, her lovely smile...well, just everything about her. :laugh: And I’m also happy for her coach, who (to my knowledge) isn’t yet as well known as someone like Brian Orser. Kaetlyn’s gold is a highlight of the season for me.

Congratulations also to Satoko for overcoming her injury and health issues, and to Wakaba for conquering her nerves! What an unexpected delightful podium!!!

Seriously, some are arguing Higuchi should have won? I like her but she didn't have a strong short program. Her long program was good and she was rewarded with a high score. But her presentation is not all there yet--no surprise since she is only 17 and this is just her second year as a senior. Kaetlyn is a better performer, period. By any reasonable measure--COP, 6.0, ordinals, points, whatever--Osmond was the winner here.

Which does not change the fact that she is basic, boring,

Pretty basic in your analysis, actually I didn’t even bother reading your lame opinion. Fact is, Osmand is World Champion!!

Lol, so every time someone says "basic" my mind immediately goes to this hilarious, satire Insta (rather NSFW):

https://www.instagram.com/the_la_basics/?hl=en

Seems like "basic" is more attributed to prissy, privileged gays based in L.A. (not that I know any, personally)..... instead of the newly crowned ladies World Champion, Osmond, who I'd say is anything but basic. :biggrin:

When did we decide Osmond was some great performer? I like her, but ever since Pyeonchang there has been this narrative that she’s some great artist that seemingly came out of nowhere.

In the short she’s appropriately fun and jaunty and I enjoy watching it, but she doesn’t do much beyond that. In the long, however, she doesn’t really do anything to characterize the music at all. She makes some vague hand gestures to reference ballet, she hits a few musical cues in an obvious way. But there is no variation in her carriage, no use of her limbs or bodily position to characterize the shifting tones in the piece. The swan piece is one of juxtaposition - spectacle and severity, alongside reservation and delicacy. You see that characterized somewhat in the spins, but she really lacks the fluidity to characterize this. She also requires much more attack and precision in the steps to evoke the music.

I just want to know what you guys see that I’m missing? She projects decently, but beyond that I just don’t see her as a great performer.

Go and see her LIVE, as I have and be prepared to be AMAZED, as most judges are. There truly is a difference, as one commentary said at the Olympics, she covers 35% more ice in a single program, than the current Russian ladies.

3Flip+3Toe, +2 / good flip and toe, good flow out and nice distance covered

I have a big issue with calling Osmond's toeloop here "good" - it was barely rotated and she did not have good flow out, there was a visible grind on the landing and she had to quickly put her free foot down to stabilize. The same was true in the SP as well; I can not see her combos deserving more than +1 GOE and these frivolous +GOE grades given out to people are what distorts the scores.

I get 147.52

You don't though...the GOE and PCS you just gave to Osmond would add up to 141.12!! That's 6 points lower than this total score you somehow came up with and 9 points lower than what she actually got from the judges. :scratch2:

Seriously, some are arguing Higuchi should have won? I like her but she didn't have a strong short program. Kaetlyn is a better performer, period.

Osmond did not have a strong short program either, that's not much of an argument. And where is your argument for Kaetlyn being "a better performer, period", where are the specifics? I found Higuchi to be the better performer in the LP, having a better sense of abandon in her movement, and being more in character and showing a better range of movement. Her twizzles are way better than Osmond's, for example.

Once again you dissemble, since the point of my noting that Osmond is the first winner from Canada in 45 years was to refute your spurious idea that there's some great swell of nefarious Canadian politicking behind Osmond's winning over Higuchi.

You don't seem to understand what is being talked about, as what you quoted was a statement of why Nationalistic attitudes are ridiculous.

Aside from that, Osmond being the first Canadian lady in 45 years to be given a title is NOT any argument whatsoever that there wasn't politics and inflated scoring happening. How do you not see the fallacy of your argument? Those are unrelated things and Canada has simply lacked competitive ladies. No amount of politics for any of their other ladies in the past several decades was ever going to get them a World title, since none of them ever delivered enough to actually politic. Winning a World title is hardly the only extent of political influence anyway, there are other beneficial results a federation can achieve. For example, Osmond undeservedly "won" 2012 Skate Canada and her scores have constantly been creeping upwards, even when she has given rather weak performances.

The notion that Higuchi is disadvantaged because she's from Japan doesn't hold water in the slightest.

This is not what was being argued. The issue is how ANY skater who is considered a "chosen one" receives inflated scores for what they actually put out there on the ice. Higuchi does not have the same clout as Osmond and has not been "chosen" to be a champion who the judges "need" to reward; as such her scores are not inflated as much and the scoring differential is inaccurate. Forget country, that doesn't matter. The issue is simply the judges giving certain scores out based upon reputation/momentum or whatever you want to call it.

Why do you assume I haven't see her live? I have. Your comment also presumes I find the current Russian women spectacular. And you don't really address my criticism and question. I was asking why the people who have defended her as a great performer and artists think so. What, specifically, about her programs or presentation qualifies her as such. The amount of ice coverage could be part of artistry, depending on the program and how it's use, but just by itself it doesn't make a great performance or artistic presentation and certainly is just one of many aspects that would need to be considered.

Yup, I'm here, late to the party!

Wish I could've been here chatting with everyone like I did for the OGs, but work schedule just didn't cooperate with that, so my WFSCs were watched by DVR.

Completely surprised by Alina's performance, and congrats to Kaetlyn for the win and to the double podium finish for Japan.

I was really shocked by the amount of deductions they gave to Mirai, but I'm glad that she had no falls and fought for some landings. She can leave the sport (if that's what she's choosing to do) proud of her last performance.

I remember seeing Kaetlyn as a 16 year old and being impressed with her performance skills. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7P5WCyADNgg She didn't come out of nowhere. She was injured for a long time and kind of forgotten. I was never a believer before last season. At this competition, where others faltered, Kaetlyn was the clear and obvious winner. She had 7 points on Higuchi after the short program. Wakaba, by the way, only beat Satoko Miyahara by less than a point. I think there is a better case for her to have had bronze than gold.
