Skaters with consistently good/bad costumes

Since you asked, yes, alot goes into designing any figure skating costume.

A lot goes into making and fitting a costume and making sure it withstands the wear and tear of the sport, yes.
But I wouldn't say that's design, just like anyone can throw paint at a wall but we won't be obliged to call it a Jackson Pollock ;)

^I would definitely include that within the frame of “design,” considering we’re taking about sports wear.

Visually, Nathan’s SP costume wasn’t particularly complex, but I thought it was striking and I liked it. (I feel like it could have been very aesthetically appealing on him if he’d gotten a higher fade and kept some longer curls on top, cuz as was he looked a bit too straight. Vertically speaking.)

You’re right that the FS costume was really nothing special though.

For some reason I really like the muumuus...I don't know why, they seem to match Liza's personality though and are elegant in their own way! I especially liked the purple one.

Plushy's gala costumes were consistently extra...from the one with the giant clown head, to the one that turned into a dress and even the over the top tropical one for one of his earlier galas.

She won a ton of gold medals in those muumuus, so they probably are among some of her favorite costumes!

Wait 7 pages in and no mention of Carolina’s bright green bedazzled pants suit from this past season?! I mean I know she only wore it once but it truly was one of the most baffling, hideous costumes from any discipline. Perhaps everyone has simply blocked it from their minds 😂

 We have!

And let us never speak of it again. ;)

(Seriously...that was hideous...thank God she didn't use it at the Olympics!)

And if we can talk about someone who is consistently inconsistent, I would love to nominate Yuzu.

In the last 3 years though I have seen nothing but absolutely gorgeous costumes from him, besides that horrendous green cabbage costume in 15/16. Chopin esp Ver 2 but also Ver 3, Seimei esp Ver 2, Notte Stellata, LGC both white and purple, H&L are all to die for.

I also love the dangling shredded silk thingy, whatever it should be called, in his Etude and H&L costumes, especialy the later. It actually adds so much to the ethereal quality of program.

R&J Ver 2, Notre Dame, Zigeunerweisen, plus the previously mentioned green cabbage one, these do kinda hurt me eyes and soul.

I think male skaters should be more "conservative" - Patrick Chan and Jeremy Abbott were very well dressed from this point of view, elegance with simplicity. Yuzuru Hanyu's costume in Sochi (SP) was great too.

Agh, usually Carolina's outfits are stunners though. That one threw us all for a loop and the Olympics helped me heal but I'm still reeling a little.

I know it's so minority opinion, but I love yuzu's "requiem of heaven and earth" costumes. When I saw a photo first, what?? merman or seaweed? but after I saw the program in motion, I really felt the costume fit with song's theme and mood well.
Especially, I love 16 worlds gala version. Boston rink's light matched with his costumes perfectly.

I also loved yuzu's prince purple costume, especially in spin positions, it really maximize his speed.

I know everyone don't love yuzu's costume choice. But if he retire, someone will miss "what yuzu's costume will be..??" off season joke:laugh:

Awwwww lol I was just watching some Brian the other day. You don't love red princely jumpsuit Calgary 88? :dev3:

 Poor BOser...Brain Boitano definitely had the better outfit there, although BOser's had a certain charm.

Although it occurs to me...those two were wearing pretty much wearing unitards...but men aren't supposed to wear tights - did that rule come in later, or is a unitard a clever way of getting around that?

I feel like unitards were pretty standard for men in the 80s, actually. Before that it was just suits.

Having gone through and looks at them because of this thread, I want to add that I really like most of Max Aaron’s costumes, and I think they’re more flattering than most costumes are. (Really flattering, actually, but it helps that he’s pretty. :agree2:) The only exception is the Gladiator costume: I really, really hate it. Still, one miss isn’t bad.

It’s actually called the fluffy lettuce salad costume, jeeeez. Get it right!

Ahem, that’s actually just how I refer to it around here. ;)
