Ladies Results - SPOILER

re:

There's some argument for this, but the problem is that it's not the same judges for each event (or the same caller) and scores can vary quite wildly from event to event for the same approximate level skate. Just like scores seem to automatically increase for the Olympics and Worlds, even when skaters may not perform as well as they did earlier in the season.

However, I do think it can make the GPF a bit of a less serious competition when some of the obviously strong competitors don't make the cut because they were in tougher fields. I'm just not sure there is a perfect way to make sure the best skaters make the final.

Actually, you could have a committee meet and look through videos of all the performances, as well as read through the COP protocols. The committee would then decide which 6 out of the top 10 scorers would get to the Grand Prix final. They would make their decision by compensating for score disparities between the different GP Events.

I'm not sure that's much better. Just adding another subjective element to an already subjective "sport".

In other words, favoritism rears its ugly head (again)

Sebestyen may have the lead but she only has 54 points. That won't compete with the big ones (Kim, Asada, Ando) who all score well over 60. Meissner too, but she seems to be a weaker SP skater (scoring around 58). Doesn't bode too well for the Final. This really IS a second-rate field if 54 puts you in the lead!! Has to be the weakest of all the GP events.
Well, Julia's 54.36 in the short program would have put her in 6th place at Skate America, 6th place at Skate Canada, 3rd place in Cup of China (just ahead of herself, with 52.82, LOL), and 4th in Eric Bompard.

But, like Ohio State said about whether it's fair that they might have to play Michigan again in the national championship game -- we don't make the schedule, we just punish whoever lines up across from us.

Every GP competitor has her fate in their own hands -- beat the ladies that you're lined up against.

Mathman, as funny as it sounds, a 6th place finish at Skate America for Julia Sebestyen would actually be something to be proud of. I mean, just look at her competitive record for the last few years. A top 6 at a very competitive GP event would definitely be out of her reach. Skate America was incredibly competitive with Mao Asada almost slipping to 4th behind Sarah Meier. To be 6th in a field like that is no slight accomplishment.

what if three of the top 3 scores were made by one skater? ;) you'd still end up with lower ranking/scoring skaters in the final... ;)

Well, each skater only gets to skate in two events, so I guess the worst thing that could happen is if three skaters would have the top six scores among them.

But the reason that I would not be in favor of this idea is that it completely takes away the idea of each event as being a sports competition in its own right. I don't think you could sell Skate America on the basis of, "hey, everybody, come out and see whether Kimmie can get a lot of points and then maybe she will get more than the amount of points that Mao Asada might get in two months in NHK."

The way it is now, Skate America (and all the rest) can be billed as a major international competition all by itself, without reference to who might or might not eventually skate in the GP final.

Go Sarah! It looks like she needs to win and get 106.10 points in the LP to make the final.

Here's what I don't want to happen: Sokolova, Meier, Sebestyen. That way Elena knocks Meier out of the finals without helping herself. (Except that she helps herself to the first place money, of course. ;) )

Meier is not even IN the finals yet, is she?

I have a feeling it'll depend on ol' Julia. She can either hang onto the lead or bomb out of the medal stands. I think Sokolova will hang onto a podium spot, maybe even snag the top one. There seems to be a lot of love for Sarah around here and I won't dim the party, but she could do it too. I think Sokolova or Sebestyen is more likely though.

Only Ando and Kim are definitely in right now. It Sarah wins the Cup of Russia tomorrow night, and scores more than 106.09 points in the LP while doing so, then she will beat Rochette on the second tie breaker. In that case I think she will make the finals no matter what Asada, Suguri and Nakano do in NHK.

In that case, and if Sebestyen finishes third overall tomorrow, it will almost surely be Ando, Kim, Sebestyen, Meier and two out of Asada, Suguri and Nakano.

I think.

Something like that...

This is how I feel about it. I do not favour the idea of a committee doing the choosing because then why bother with the Grand Prix at all? This method may not be perfect, but it does have some things going for it.
