Well, it looks like it was no fluke. I wonder if the pressure of being the next big thing got to Zhang.

What pressure? Whoever said anything besides the legion of skatefans? Or do they contribute to the pressure on the skater as well?
People are quick to dub a promising skater the next big thing. I prefer to hang back and wait until they show up in seniors with steady results. She's still got plenty of time.

I think some are not "afraid" (not the best term but at a loss for a better one) to be wrong and just express what they feel might happen. Nothing wrong either way IMO, just saying what you think might happen means also that you are willing to take a chance with your belief. Risk has loss and gain.
I guess it isn't a fluke about Caroline's 2a??? Wow, I wonder if she just started working on the 3a recently and it is throwing her off or it was the pressure. ???? Time will "tell" but where is the fun in that.

None??? She's the most hyped skater since Kwan. She just won all her events this season by a landslide. How could she not feel pressure - especially when she knew her best buddy/training partner was just as or almost as good as she is?!?
Anyway, she just fell again in the LP so it wasn't a fluke.
NOTE: I didn't follow the GS debate on the word "hyped." All I mean by it is talked about. I consider the talk about Zhang well founded.

Sorry, I really didn't mean "afraid" it was not a good word as I said. There is something for "not counting chicken before they are hatched." And nothing at all wrong with your stance on waiting, just as nothing wrong the other way. I must have missed the point to some degree, apologies.
As far as pressure, OMG I am going to say "hype" - run away Seani run run - COULD and Miria was obviously hot on her heals. Speculation as always, but the possibility is great of pressure IMO. But that is all JMO.
But I think it is more then an off day IMO, for it would be at the very least "2 off days" for Caroline (just LOVE that name, can't say it enough) for she said she has never missed it in comps and now twice? And I 'spose she is entitle to 2 off days as well.
I would like to know when she started trying the 3a though. I wonder if that was what really threw her off.????

oh come on, that's their job
I meant a REAL source (like an independent newspaper, magazine, etc.). But still, it does show that USFS wants to begin the early stages of positioning her as their new "it-girl" (like Kimmie 3 years ago), and this will add some pressure for her later on.

First of all you says its only the fans that are talking her up and now you say the pressure can't have come from the fans :scratch:

I think RD is making a specious distinction between skating boards and major media. These days the internet is major media. Cf the emphasis on bloggers at recent political conventions.
The fans on these forums have "hyped" up Zhang and praised her to the hilt, occasionally going as far as declaring her olympic champ. The mainstream press/media (and yes, this includes internet articles) are just starting to mention her as a promising up-and-comer (along with others). I'm basically saying that any pressure Zhang might have felt at nationals came from within her (and maybe from her family), but not from the fans or press. Nothing compared to the pressure she will face up in seniors, and with USFS seemingly interested in making her their next it-girl. Look how much attention Kimmie got in 04 and 05. I have to say she handled that well, though.

Did you read this, I bet Caroline has. Where ever the hype may come from she likely reads it and it is on her mind at least occasionally. Whether it comes from a big name publicist (and some of the posters her could be considered such via credentials) or the ones she competes against, then it MIGHT have effect.

And you don't think that Caroline has her own fans back at her home club rink? Even in my local rink the big stars are the two girls who are just starting to work triples...they feel the pressure of the fans and club to go to competitions and win big. I've not doubt that the skates that Caroline had on the GP where she was leaving her closest competitors 20 points behind led to big expectations and pressure for nationals.

No one is invincible so maybe that person would re-think that after seeing the junior nationals results. But whether she has read that or not, we don't know- we can only speculate this stuff.
