2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

Dear fans of the Russian ladies,

I have a friend who recently became a fan of figure skating (I made him :D) and especially of the senior Russian ladies, so he got inspired and decided to make a video - like a trailer for the fight for senior spots at the Russian Nationals this year. I think the video excellently captions the physical and mental strength of all these wonderful ladies. And a small tip - keep attention to the lyrics!

So, I hope you will enjoy it!

seniors are OK, but this time RusNat without Tiny Boss & Co can't be acceptable

The idea is that this year is the last chance for many of them before 3A come and officially take spots internationally, so it's about the seniors and their struggles and overcoming them. ((:

Hi there, first time poster!

Anyone think Serafima could factor in at Nationals? She looked better than expected at Tallinn IMO. I hadn't realized how much I missed her :hap10:

This.
I don't like the video since there is nothing about juniors with their quads (main contenders for the podium!) - and that is the main intrigue of the tournament. Also Radionova most likely will not participate since she couldn't qualify - but there are lot of attention for her there. Also lots of other senior ladies are absent as well - is it that hard to make some footage about each of 18 participants? At least Gulyakova and Tarusina are serious contenders for 3rd seniors national team spot as well.

Dude, it was made by a brand new figure skating fan who likes the Russian ladies. I think we can cut him some slack about not being completely up to date on every contender and appreciate the effort.

Bewitched, tell your friend thanks for the cool video and welcome to figure skating fandom!

I understand that. However I am strongly convinced that before doing video/article/anything about something one should investigate the matter at least. Else it would have little sense.

Great video. Now it is time to introduce him to Rusian and Japanese junior girls. ;) There are at least 7-8 amazing junior skaters from Russia and 4-5 exceptionally great girls form Japan.

If he is a big name in Russian FS ;)Plushenko thought Alina will win she was stronger thus he thinks that is well-deserved victory. (But after IdF he supported Evgenia in this mess. Thank God!)

PS: A lot of respect to Butyrskaya for being reasonable.

Me, personally, I prefer to not take sides. I'm TedBarton'ing it - I like them all. Regardless the flag and their lobby or fandom. :)

Well, my impression is that Russian FS establishment is not really split on just 2 camps: pro-Zhenya vs pro-Alina. Most people are just choosing to be somewhat in-between.

I especially liked the moment when Butyrskaya laughed at the usual complains about the young age of almost all of the Olympic gold ladies for the last 20 years. She said it is totally ok, because it has been always like that.

Well, if you think about it..
Oksana Baiul (from Ukraine) won over heavy-favorite Nancy Kerrigan (USA) for Olympic gold. And disappeared from the FS scene completely.
Tara Lipinski (USA) upset Michelle Kwan (USA) and stopped competing.
Sarah Hughes (USA) disappointed Irina Slutskaya (Russia).
Shizuka Arakawa (Japan) defeated Sasha Cohen (USA).
Adelina Sotnikova (Russia) upset Yuna Kim (Korea).

Maria Butyrskya mentioned all of those cases to show that there is always a younger ambitious girl somewhere around the corner. And she said it is totally fine as long as fair competitive principle applies. Everyone should be given a fair shot. She admitted with a cheerful laughter that she got beaten by many younger girls on many occasions too and she was able to win her Worlds gold only at the age of 26. Morale of the story is to stop complaining about the rules, about '"wuzrobbed" conspiracies and about "younger" girls, and get to work instead. Let the ice decide. This is more to my liking. Take an example from the Japanese girls. Totally the bushido way! :)

For me, its not about taking sides. What Besti says is bad, regardless of skaters she supports. It is not a matter of taste, not a matter of oppinion.
When the rusfed representative says that Trankov coaches TM into success, that is bad, regardless of sides taken. Simply because he trashes and undervalues the work of Moser, who coached them for years. When he doesn't even know Robin's name, that is also sheer disrespectful.

Well, personal opinion of some rusfed representatives does not reflect the position of the rusfed itself or the whole Russian FS establishment or of all Russian active or retired skaters. IMHO, don't read into all that too much. ;)

I guess I think of it a little differently. Figure skating is such a niche sport outside of the every 4 year furor of the Olympics that if there’s a new fan I wanna be encouraging. But I can see your point too.

My friend, the creator of this video, knows about the junior ladies, has even watched some JGPs and admires Kostornaya. He just had another idea for the video.
Now this is my own interpretation but I think he wanted to include only the seniors because they are the ones having hard time right now, struggling with jump technique, puberty, coach changes, publicity, 'the juniors wave' and so on. Growing up and taking part in the war is demanding, so to say.

And not saying that the juniors have it easy, not at all! It's just that I think in terms of creating emotional connection to the figure skating fans, they are not there yet in comparison with some of the senior ladies.

Just another point of view. I hope each and every one of these great ladies give superb performances at their competitions!

Don't know. Why don't you try?

He just became a fan and did his best.

Are you sure he knows enough? I mean - the video is called "This is War". But considering the level and current form of ladies he mostly shows - the name "The Execution" would be more appropriate  In other words the message of video seems very misleading for those who knows more about it.
