Poor Music Choices

For those of you who have forgotten the horror or Denkova/Stavisky's 04-05 FD Back to Africa, here is the full horror:

Great skaters with truly awful music, awful choreography and awful costumes to make one disgusting program. I'm sorry if this link brought up the memory you tried to forget.

I actually really liked this music. I give them kudos for trying something different! If I hear Tosca, Carmen, Swan Lake, Nutcracker, Feeling Begins, Bolero or Romeo and Juliet again I'll throw up! LOL
Also, A&P are also one of my all-time favorite dance teams. With their MLK 2002 LP....I really wasn't sure about it at first..but in the end it grew on me. Once again, it was original and something different. Someone also said they didn't like Rochette's "Like a Virgin" music...I actually enjoyed the flow it had for a SP..

Everyone's different - i liked this program, thought it was interesting.

Call me crazy but I thought Irina's long program last year was beneath her. It was a lot of recycling.

I like what Joannie did with this music, but as to the music itself, I thought the "70s singing string" arrangement was a little odd....

It's like, the whole program, she plays a nun, who at the very end, becomes a prostitute.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank God... a sense of humor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One choice of music that i realy hate was the Samba of last yer OD, they soud almost like the same, and skater loock like stupeds. I love this kind of music,(cuz i live in Rio de janeiro for 3 yers) but exist diferentt tipes of samba, beatiful ones... they should resarch more...

anotherr thing that i don't like is african temes...again, there are some cool african songs.. but most of the peplo don't know.. and most of the skater too.

I agree! There are a lot of different types of Samba, Tango, Flamenco... but a lot of skaters choose always the same.

They are not culturally bound by Eastern Europeans and many Western Europeans. There's no history of Africa in Europe to have these dances part of their culture. They glean those dances, I believe from Hollywood movies which were always exaggerated.

Gladiator would be a really poor choice these days, as would Winter, These two are synonymous with Yagudin, anyone else skating to it would be awkward at best LOL. I know I wouldn't want to choreograph a program to those pieces! Some VERY big shoes to fill there.

Joesitz.. much of the tiem here in brazil ( in the south where i live almost all the time) wee do't have african history..but everyone can resarch on books and internet.. its not esy to faund cool african songs.. but they exist.. and the songs of movies most of the time realy exaggerate...

Actually, "17 Moments in Spring" was the music Maria used during the two seasons PRIOR to SLC. (That, IMO, was fabulous music for her, and is actually one of my favorite programs). Whatever she skated to during the 01-02 season and at SLC, was something entirely different.

The Tale of Travel that Maria had used in SLC has been revived--by the newest Russian ladies' champion, Ksenja Doronyna. EEEK!

I don't know which I dislike more the music or the skating.

You mean the arm flailing on skates? she looks like she's drowning! And on some jumps, her upper body pre-rotates, so it's rotating before the lower body does...not good technique.

Phantom of the Opera - all of the music, but particularly those opening chords, should be banned. It is so very tired now. It distracts me from what is sometimes a very quality performance, eg. Takahashi this season. And it's usually always accompanied at some point by the miming of ripping away an invisible mask. Also very, very tired now.

I'm so sick of Carmen... I'm sorry, but the minute I hear that music I just wanna run out of the room!!! Is it a rule that everyone must skate to this music?? I remember when Dick Button made the comment: "hours and hours of musical choices and they always pick Carmen in the end" or something to that effect... No truer words have ever been spoken... :banging:
