Evgenia Medvedeva

I'm still very much a fan of OCS and think under different circumstances it would've absolutely worked for Zhenya. In the end one of the big problems this season is that everything for her has been changing. We all know the list: she's retooling her jumps after the injury and whatever other changes took place for her physically, she can't do most of her spins bc her back needs time to heal, she changed her coaching team and her country of residence after training in her hometown with the same coach for most of her career, she had to deal with all the drama around it... yes, as it turned out, throwing a completely unfamiliar kind of program at her on top of all that was a mistake.

I still stand by my opinion that she could've done OCS wonderfully, just not this season when there are so many other unfamiliar things on the ice for her. Wilson or not, I very much hope she tries a similar style again when she gets comfortable with herself once more.

Speaking of TSL interviews, they've also released a wonderful long interview with Kimmie Meissner and in part 2 she talks about her own coaching change drama and how it was for her and a lot of what she said about the way it knocked her out of balance mentally resonated with Zhenya's current situation for me. Not in the specifics of things that went down, but just in terms of her mental state. Especially when she talks about the way she completely fell apart at Nationals, despite being perfect in practice. It's a really interesting interview overall, so I highly recommend!

I haven’t watched the interview yet but thank you for the brief summary! After hearing that I’m kind of glad Evgenia is by herself just decompressing. The expectations were high this season and many people have not been patient. Being by herself, being back at home, and relying on self-discipline is good for her right now IMO. She didn’t have much of an off season so she should take advantage of this kind of lull to train in case she needs to skate later

Oh she needs to be ready , according to tsl (dont k ow if it is true though) that the cup of Russia i will basically be a skate off between the contender for world's spots, meaning she has to get ready for that now if it is true

This is bound to be much more exciting that Euros itself (for Ladies). It will not be good for my heart , but I am hopeful!

Misha's interview with TSL has been transcribed here.

I really like Misha's professional attitude here - he clearly knows Zhenya well but is approaching the work from a level-headed and reasonable POV. This is exactly the kind of help she needed. A lot has been said here already about David Wilson - personally I don't think he's the best fit for Zhenya either, but I do hope she keeps pushing herself in new genres.

Some translations of the interview:

Zhenya says that Tosca will maybe be kept for next season.

I think that and the subtitles cover most of it! Important info that's not translated in either: Zhenya gets asked if she misses TCC and says she does a lot, especially Jason and then there's also Javi. She then says how much of a shame it is that her and Javi are going to miss each other completely, because he's currently there to train for the Europeans and she's getting back to Toronto right when the Europeans start.

So yeah, that's our confirmation for when she gets back, she won't be going to Euros for any mysterious reasons and, judging by how nonchalant she is about this info, her prolonged stay in Moscow was pre-planned. I guess, just to give her some time at home since she doesn't have to go to any competition yet. Good to have that mystery mostly lifted.

Holy... her former coach looks so ridicolously young that I looked her up. She's in her 40s. Wow!

There's also a small interview with her about Zhenya on CSKA's official website.

There's nothing really worth translating, she just talks about how incredibly hardworking Zhenya was, despite being the youngest in her group back in the day and how she wouldn't stop until she got things right. It's really sweet. I find it very heartwarming to see what a welcome Zhenya gets in CSKA. Good for tanking up on positive energy!

(still hope she changes to CSKA officially... they're definitely providing her with way more support than Sambo this season)

^ That group picture is so precious - Evgenia was the littlest of all!!!:luv17:

So it is working out for Medvyedeva after all.

Having a few good long evening talks face to face in her own Russian language, perhaps a few cries into a friendly shoulder long missed, cleansing herself of negative emotions and bad feelings left after Nationals.

Therapy, training at CSKA to her own schedule and plans, and her Canadian trainers and friends only a Skype call away.

Is she still officially reserve for Europeans and on stand by till competition officially starts, or has she been relieved from this duty?

What kind of commute does Zhenya have between her apartment in zmoscow and CSKA? I’ve heard traffic in Moscow is brutal, but at least she’s not traveling during peak commute time.

I agree. And I hope she goes back to, if not that exact programme, something lighter and more saucy in a less crazy season.

I’ve always loved Kimmie. There was a different part of the interview that stood out to me, actually — it’s when she discusses Worlds 2007 and a conversation with Ravi Walla (best known as Katelyn Osmond’s coach, among others, but he was the technical specialist for the ladies free). To summarize: when Yuna fell on her second 3Lz, she quickly added a 1T afterward and the technical panel went back and forth for an eternity on whether or not to ratify the combo, which they eventually did. Kimmie replied, “Well, at least the call was made in favour of the skater,” to which Ravi pointed out — “But which skater?” If the call had gone the other way, Kimmie would have been third, not off the podium, and the narrative of her career would have been radically different. There’s a difference between maintaining a podium finish the year after winning Worlds and not even making the podium, after all. And that wasn’t within her control.

It would be a mistake in my opinion if she would go back to OCS...she clearly did not feel this program and it was hard for her to sell it. I do not think it would become somehow great, even in two years from now on.

It´s the best to concentrate on the TES side and to strengthen her artistic side where she is already strong. The reality is, she competes in Russia. She needs to show her strongest side.

I think she felt it fine until the stress of the season got in the way. It showed lots of potential at test skates. It just got worse as the season went on.

That said, I'm not advocating that she go back to it. But acting like she was never performing it well is just inaccurate imo.

Stress is always there, I think this was not the main reason.

The performance/interpretation opinion is subjective. I think OCS does not suit her, even at test skate it was not like "wow, that is a very good performance/interpretation".

I agree with this. I liked OCS, but I thought that it definitely was not the right SP for Zhenya to be realistically be competitive at top tier on top of everything else. It takes a certain kind of skater to really sell an OCS kind of program, and I don't think Zhenya currently is that kind of skater. I felt it was closer to what maybe a gala could be or something but it just didn't feel right. I would really want her to work with different choreographers in the coming seasons and experiment around to see what really is best and expand her boundaries as a skater, and I hope her team doesn't decide to try to stick to the same one, two choreographers as of right now (unless some masterpiece arises in the future but that hasn't happened yet so)
