Which skaters do you believe are better at SP or Free and the few who can do both. Please don't base it on one competition.

Sasha - definitely SP and I daresay who can beat her?

Emily - SP

Kimmie - Free

Joannie - SP

Mao - Free

Yu Na - both

Miki - Free

Alissa - ???

Nobunari - SP

Joubert - SP

takahashi - ???

Lambiel (healthy) - Both

Evan - Free

Weir - Both

Plush, Irina, Kwan are all both.

Is this only current skaters?

I would count both Angela Nikodinov and Nancy Kerrigan as short program skaters.

Elene Gedevanishvili - great SP. I hope she will show us a great free program as well very soon.

I've always said that Sasha might be the best short program skater ever... For this new crop, hmmm....

Ladies:
Emily: short / Kimmie: long / Miki: long / Bebe: short / Mao: short / Yuna: ??

Men:
Brian: short / Johnny: short / Evan: long / not sure about everyone else...

Both:
I can't really think of any of the newbies who bring it for the whole comp at each comp... which is part of my issue - I'm spoiled by Kwan and Irina

sasha's short programs were so good they often made up for her mistakes in the long and that's how she got where she did. It alwasy seems to me logical that the short would be better... the stammina issue, 3 jumps versus 6 or 7, for the ladies one of which is the double axel... which most of these ladies can do in thier sleep.

But then there is the problem of making that onel ittle slip up, when everybody else is error free and that puts one way down in the standings. In the free, one errror might not matter so much. you can always change the program and throw in that extra triple toe. Look at evan lyasck. The pressure of doing everything right gets to him in the short and in the long he is perfect. I wonder really is it easier menatly kknowing that there is room for error... then you don't make any errors?

Sad to say, Miki beat her at Campbells in the fall... another reason I think Miki could win Worlds.

Don't count your eggs before they hatch. Miki had a mediocre performance at Tropee Eric Bombard that would probably earn a Worlds bronze at best! Then, she had a complete breakdown at the GP Final, where she lost the LP to none other than Julia Sebestyen?

From losing to Julia Sebestyen to winning a Worlds medal? Why, the chances of that happening are as much as the chances of Sebestyen herself earning a Worlds medal ;-)

I think it's fair to say that Miki's downward spiral has taken her out of contention this year, a fact that her rather impressive performances early in this season cannot erase.

Keep in mind that at GPF, Miki was sick with the flu. She was in second after a pretty much perfect short that put her less than two points behind Mao's amazing short.
At Japanese nationals, she had another perfect short. In the long, she fell on a jump and dislocated her shoulder but the rest of her program was clean- including a double axel after she injured the shoulder.
Considering the determination she's shown this year, I don't think Miki should be counted out at all. She, like Yu-Na, is a wild-card after the shoulder injury, but there is a chance that she could play spoiler and win the whole thing.

Sasha always got my hopes up in short. I don't think she felt the pressure early on, but nerves prob got the best of her in the long, sadly.

Going by this season's results, Mao is definitely more consistent in the Short Program.

Skate America: 68.84 (1st)
NHK: 69.50 (1st)
GP Final: 69.34 (1st)

You can't get any more consistent than that!

As for her Long Programs,

Skate America: 4th
NHK: 1st
GP final: 4th

Slutskaya-short
Kwan-long
Cohen-short
Arakawa-long
Meissner-long
Asada-short
Ando-short
Kim-both
Suguri-both
Kostner-both
Meier-long

Lambiel-long
Joubert-short
Lysacek-long
Weir-short
Plushenko-both
Sandhu-long
Buttle-short
Oda-short
Takahashi-short

Mao is a killer in the short program with those 3 scores in the 68-70 range. I even believe Irina only has 1 score over 68 ever, and that was her 70+ PB at Cup of China.

HAHAHAHAHAHA!! Miki DID win Worlds!! (to whoever said that Miki winning worlds was about as likely as Julia Sebestyen winning Worlds)

I agree that Jeff is more of a SP skater on the whole,

And Joannie I would say is more of an LP skater actually - true, she'll often make mistakes in either program, but I feel her fighting spirit often comes out better in the LP. In fact I feel that will be key to Joannie's future success, to become a better SP skater - IMO she has yet to deliver a really strong SP to the level that some of her strongest LP's have been.
