2019 World Championships Free Dance

What a fantastic program. Wow. [emoji170] I can see why you love it, Beatrice! Had me tearing up at the end too.

One of my favorite things that Paul and Piper do is they carry the performance from the moment they get on the ice until the moment they step off the ice. I wish it was something that became more common for skaters to do.

Oh, that was just stunning! This is by far my favourite FD of the season, and they created a magical atmosphere with it here. I hope that they are well rewarded for their efforts!

Piper GILLES / Paul POIRIER
Country: Canada
Music: Vincent (Starry Starry Night) by Don MacLean, Govardo
Choreography by: Carol Lane, Juris Razguliaevs
Costumes: Absolutely beautiful blue "Starry Night" dress for her (she even wears star barrettes, bles her); muslin collarless shirt with subtle paint stains and splatters with black pants for him. These are COSTUMES (and I mean that as a big compliment)

Program Layout:

Forward flip over his shoulder, steps, back flip over his shoulder and into the
Dance Spin - they went for speed rather than intricate positioning. Level 4, 1.93 goe
Steps with difficult entrance into multidirectional
Twizzles - with interconnecting steps. Level 4 for both, 1.75 goe
Lovely musical editing here from Don M to Corvado on a non-scoring lift and into
Curve Lift - in squat position. Also really lovely. Level 4, 1.38 goe
Choreo Spinning Movement - nice trnasition with tempo change out. Nicely edited. 2.70 goe
Tempo change
Rotational Lift - by thigh. Seen it all before, nice though it is. Level
NT St Seq - Level 3 for both, 1.89 goe
Diag Step Seq - Level 4, 2.90 goe
Like how the two step sequences are of a piece. Nice flow and momentum building toward
Chor Char St Seq - redone at Canadian Nats. I was curious to see if they'd redo it again. MUCH better. 3.60 goe
Chor Sliding Movement [3.32 goe] -->
Stationary Lift - This is all of one piece and it's freaking gorgeous. It's one of my favorite lifts of the season in any discipline. Level 4, 1.53 goe
And final pose.

OK, I'll 'fess up. I was profoundly disappointed the first time I saw this, because I thought it was the skating equivalent of an Oscar-bait performance; Podium Bait, if you will. Pretty, yes, but I also thought things like "dumbed down" and "pandering" and "sentimental." Shoot me; I can a tough judge. But as the season progressed, this program has not only really grown, it has really grown on me, to the point where I think it's a very good attempt to keep their quirkiness but also to make it more accessible. Compromise is not always a dirty word. :)

Le Sigh.

Score: 120.48

Okay, I think P2 should have gone ABOVE Chock and Bates! It's a very exquisite FD! Ugh. I wanted 183 or 184.

Who is ready for the blood bath? The only team in the last group to earn a new season best were the Candanes and it was only in the overall score.

The lift at the end, where she’s on his back, never fails to crack me up; it makes me think of a turtle, every time. No offense to those who love these two, and their program.

I don't understand how they are so close in scores to the Italians. Piper and Paul seem like they're at another level. Hmm....

Still sobbing... I was hoping they go into first for now :sad21:
Anyway, some of their lifts are so beautiful!
Like, I’m sure, some of you as well, I’ve been a P&P fan since the times they got proper stick on GS and I’m super proud they’ve actually converted many. :cheer2:
