A Basic Introduction to the Free Dance...

People who don't watch ID or only watch ID occasionally (like, during the Olympics or, yes, Senior Worlds!) tend to sniff at ID or dismiss it as "boring" or "easy". When I've asked a number of these people why they feel this way, two answers crop again and again. ID doesn't have big jumps (well no it doesn't; what it does have is the purest form of skating of all the disciplines) and they don't "get" how it is scored. What is it they're supposed to be looking at? This is probably why even the most casual of viewers love twizzles. They're both very difficult to do, and it's easy to differentiate a good set of twizzles (speed, flow, unison, distance covered are all good) from a bad one (Whoops! He fell. Whoops! She missed catching the blade! Whoops! You can drive a tractor trailer between them! Not so good.).

So here we are at the Free Dance. This being figure skating, "free" is a relative term. Why yes, even here there are REQUIREMENTS GALORE:

Dance Lifts: Either one combo lift and a short lift or three short lifts (if you include a choreographic lift, you can now have up to four lifts in a Senior FD performance).
Dance Spins: Either one dance spin or combination dance spin
Twizzles: One combination set. Each partner is given an individual level for the element and a GOE score is given to the team as a whole.
Step Sequences: Two: one in hold and one not touching performed on one foot. Can be either straight line or curved in some manner (such as a circular or serpentine pattern). Each partner is given an individual level for the element and a GOE score is given to the team as a whole.
Choreographic Elements: Three different elements from the following choices: Choreographic Lift, Choreographic Spinning Movement, Choreographic Twizzling Movement. Choreographic Sliding Movement, Choreographic Character Step Sequence. It's the choreographic equivalent of a Chinese menu! The Choreographic Character Step Sequence is required for all senior dance teams in the FD.

Periodically, the ISU goes into a tizzy about Ice Dancing, worried that it is becoming too "athletic" and "not dancey enough." So they do things like limit the number and timing of lifts. Or, as they have recently done, they've made the choreographic elements more stringent. Two of these are relatively new. The first is the "Choreographic Character Step Sequence." Silly me! I was under the apparently mistaken impression that the entire dance is a choreographic character sequence, with steps, yes, and spins and lifts. And, one would hope, with some character! Bill Neal in another thread provided a helpful explanation: "[P]artners perform around the short axis in hold and/or non-touching: steps (some are done in-place), all sorts of different movements including sliding and turns, and mirroring choreography (each partner may cross the axis also)." The sliding movement is also a new choreographic feature this quad. They must be continuous, they may rotate, they can be in hold or not touching. Sliding Movement cannot finish as a stop on 2 knees or sitting/lying on the ice, otherwise it will be identified as a Fall/Illegal Element. I suspect they added this last requirement to prevent a rush of Torvill/Dean-esque dramatic death endings (ah! memories!).

A complete list of the FD requirements can be found here:
https://www.usfsa.org/content/2018-1...FD Chart.pdf Scroll down; you'll find it. The ISU apparently deleted their version of it from the web.

Let the dancing—and ubering and kvetching (!)—begin!

Great post WA! Sorry I am remiss in posting streaming links. I was finally able to get my DSL line fixed today (broken since November), but it is running really slowly and not coompletely smoothly.

I've really enjoyed these two this season. This free is really interesting and they both have a great performance quality. I hope Allison sticks around in Lithuania

There were times where they showed a little too much pep for the chill vibe of the song, but I think I liked it?

That was so nice, sometimes you see couples trying so hard but just sort of going through elements, but they looked like they were actually dancing out there, dancing with each other and enjoying it, so it was really lovely to watch :luv17:

Wow, that was really good. If this is the quality of the fourth group, the last groups are going to be just wild.

Music: Crazy by Gnarls Barkley (Space Jazz Cover feat. Hannah Gill and Casey Abrams)
Choreography by: Marina Zueva, Massimo Scali
Costumes: Black dress with illusion fabric neckline and back with appliques for her, basic black for him

Program Layout:

I may be the cheese who stands alone on this but I love the music. Interesting jazz take.

Twizzles - really nicely done with good spacing, sync and coverage. Level 4 for her 3 for him. 1.67 goe He was a bit frantic.
Curve Lift - Level 4 .63 goe
NT St Seq - Level 3 for her, 4 for him 1.02 goe
Sounded like a weird music cut and is a definite tempo change into
Chor Char St Seq - It has a wonderful exit out of it that is "crazy" 1.78 goe
SL Lift - to one foot; Level 4, .40 goe
Diag St Seq - with twizzle out. Level 4, .46 goe
Chor Spinning Movement - 1.66 goe. Used as a transition into the
Dance Spin - Level 4 .77 goe
Ro Lift - in a split position. Level 4 .90 goe
Chor Slide - 1.33 goe

Nice. Love how it slowly builds. They've definitely improved and gelled much more this season. She was charming throughout. He was a bit frantic at first but settled down nicely. I enjoyed that.

Score: 100.85 and a well deserved SB
