Plushenko's Return | Golden Skate

Plushenko's Return

Totally not surprised, but I'll only enjoy it if he has some real choreography - meaning jumps and elements applied evenly throughout the routine without standing and posing. Stop the arm flayling too.

For some reason I've always hated...okay, severely disliked Plushenko. I think that its because personally, I like male skaters to be more masculine skaters, like Joubert.

This is great! Evgeny will have his work cut out for him. Lambiel, Joubert and Takahashi won't lie down and die just because Plushenko is back in the picture.

Very happy to hear this, but I won't fully believe it until I see him skate at GP and Worlds.

Well, if nothing else he should be able to be put into Cup of Russia (I don't know if he's still maintaining a world ranking high enough for 2 events?) If he doesn't change choreographically (which is unlikely, since he's always been highly rewarded for his usual shtik), I'll continue to be impressed by his talent/hard work/presence, and think his programs stink.

The last few seasons, Plushy has done only Cup of Russia in the GP, and I wouldn't expect to see him skate before then. He wouldn't be eligible for two events anyway. He'll probably do Euros and Worlds.

Being in the top 24 world rankings guarantees him one spot. Last year, all but one (Geoffrey Varner) of the skaters/teams who were guaranteed one -- top 24 world rankings, top 24 personal bests, JGPF and Jr. Worlds medallists competing in seniors -- were given two in the first selection. Varner was given a second as skaters dropped out.

I doubt, though, whether Plushenko will skate more than one, and I suspect the Russian Federation will pressure/deal with the other Feds to not give him another invite, if he doesn't want to skate. If he does, I can't imagine the Fed of his choice not snapping him up, unless they don't want head-to-head competition with their own champions at their marquee events.

My take on this is the economics of the state of Russian skating. It is no longer sponsored by the State. Coaches need to be paid. Rinks need to be accessible. Skaters now have to pay for their Sport, and no one gets free living conditions.

It is no wonder that Evgeni is needed to hold on to at least the Men's Division. He was basically the last skater of the Soviet system and Mishin kept him on during the transition. Maybe Putin will finance the skating, although by now Evgeni has made a tidy sum.

Evgeni has been doing many shows so he is in shape. Now it's practice time for competition.

So, is this going to be a "single" Plushy out and about? Look out ladies, Plushy is on the prowl.;)

Starting to wonder about this "retire" term, maybe it needs to be redefined or one season off is the first statement made, like Sasha, doesn't say retire, just "time off."

Any news on the Tatiana n Max law suit, I never heard a finish to that - maybe I just missed it. ???

I can only imagine the Russian Federation has been doing some major begging to get Plushenko to come back, given the state of three of the four disciplines. I have no doubt Plushenko will have no problem taking top spot in Russian mens.

On the other hand, I've never been a fan, and didn't miss him at all. I always found it absurd how the judges treated him with scores that didn't always reflect what he did and did not do well. I can only hope they don't go back to the mindset that Plushenko is head and shoulders above the rest of the field, because, IMO, he's not, not even in the tech categories any longer.

If Plushenko returns and is scored fairly fine. If he returns and gets the outrageous PCS and GOE scores he did before I will stop watching mens singles until he is gone again.

Wonderful news! The men's event next season will be so exciting!
it was so exciting in Tokyo this season without him. Not putting Plushy down, just saying skating moves on with or without him. What with Tomas Verner beating Joubert in the LP, and Daisuke and Lambiel stealing the crowds, Plush will be in the mix.

Joe, it's true! But I wouldn't put Tomas Verner into the mix just yet. I think Tomas and Evan are in the same mix for now. These two are a little behind of Plushenko, Joubert, Lambiel, and Takahashi. JMO.

Verner (155.80) did not beat Joubert (157.21) in the free skate at Tokyo (it just seemed like he did, LOL).

The men and the ladies fields are very interesting in this Olympic cycle. We have from 5 to 7 medal contenders for the next two Worlds!!!
Men - Plush, Joubert, Lambiel, Buttle, Takahashi, Verner and Lysacek
Ladies - Asada, Ando, Kim, Meissner, Kostner, Nakano, maybe Meier and Gedevanishvili. In 2009 Zhang and Nagasu.

Plushenko return doesn't neccesary mean he will certainly win. The others have improved a lot and have gained high respect from public and judges. Especially Lambiel and Takahashi.
