2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

I wonder if Shcherbakova will add a 2T or 3T after 1 of her 2A's, it seems odd to do the 2A back-to-back as a solo jump, she's got the stamina to do it and it would bump up her technical score closer to Trusova's and help in the event she falls on the quad lutz.
I think she might be maxed out on the number of jumps she can do

My rankings today:

1. Trusova: Her jumps look bigger and better and she's grown noticeably. As for her program, okay, it's not to my taste, but she does have excellent presentation with body. She isn't jump, two foot skating, jump, faceography, jump. I would like to see more tension in her upper body and arms, but that's nitpicking. She's wonderful. She's an excellent skater as well as an excellent jumper.

2. Shcherbacko: I'll give her this over Alina. She's grown too, and she has worked on her spins. I just love that puberty doesn't seem to be harming her, she's who I worry about the most. I didn't even know she was changing her dress midway, but maybe I sensed it, since I would have come up with something like that! Maybe I just expect more from her though, because artistically she can be brilliant. I really liked this, just I want that extra POW.

3. Alina: She looks wonderful. And most importantly, she looks happy, which is really all I want to see from her now. Yes, there are the posture issues (they really aren't THAT bad, but if I had to critique her, that is something she can improve on). I loved both her programs here, and she was clean and happy. Can't ask for much more than that.

4. Alena: I can get into "different". I didn't understand the step sequence. I was okay with the final cut, but I was just thinking Alena can do MAGIC to music, and this ain't it. Alena and Alina were tied in my book.

5/6. I guess I will give it to Tuk, but her program is something we've seen from her every year since she hit seniors at twelve. She spends big money on big money choreographers only to just do the same watered down thing. But you can't argue those jumps. I'm just tired of her hand- and face-ography instead of full body choreography (which is why I appreciate Trusova, she is all about her blades and one foot choreo in addition the the quad onslaught) Med (Nia) was NICE. Yeah, she had some jumps issues, but her skating has definitely improved over the last year. I just don't think it's competitive. It's beautiful and simple. Maybe I give 5 to Tuk for the two axels and Nia sixth for all her botched jumps in the second half.

7. Samodurova: I think she's psyched out. If I were she and wanted to go to the Olympics, I'd be shopping another country ASAP. She's going nowhere in Russia anymore, now that the 3A are here. She doesn't even really look like she belongs in this elite company.

Oh god, I thought there were eight, and I had to remember, yes there were. Poor Stasi!!! Totally unmemorable but had to have been better than Sofia. So Stasi in 7th, and Sofia in 8th.

My understanding is leg wrap can't count against a skater. It is a style, a preference. As long as the jump is rotated, and the wrap isn't so excessive that it ruins the jump, I think it is ignored.

Good point. It is early but impressed with the Eteri senior, not junior, girls/ladies. I really don't think Sofia is in the picture - reminds me of Maria S, Anna P - kind of had their moment but Anna and Sasha were impressive - jumps and artistry. I have a soft spot for Evgenia because timing, injuries cost her OGM but she can't compete with the jumps. she needs to do it when it counts and up the artistry and tech. Alina looks like she is third right now behind 2 of the A's. I think Liza could be a threat but she needs to think smart. Her jump lay out needs to be worked out and with the deficiencies in her pcs she needs to l earn to mask them besides improving her SS/choreo/transitions et al she needs to find moves and let her personality shine. She slows down at times. Sofia really gets lost in this group of 3A's, Alina, Evgenia and Liza. Not good enough or powerful enough technically or artistic enough. I am not sure what she can do. If Evgenia is seen almost as an afterthought and we know she is still relearning jumps and finding herself artistically then Sofia is probably in bigger trouble . In the bigger picture you have six very good Russians; 4 real good Japanese. Lilbet and a South Korean or two, a too young American and a solid American in Liu and Tennell. Not to mention some fighting back skaters in Gold, Chen and Canada's Gabby Daleman. Wow!:)

But there are other deductions for underrotations. Bad air position can have -1 to -3 deduction, according to the rules (obviously for Alena would be offset by her height/distance/transitions), but you need it for +4/5.

I can’t find the comment anymore but to the person asking about Anna’s back to back double axels, it’s because she has three triple triple combinations. If she added another quad or changed to a 3+2 then she’d only have one 2A

I will admit that I am old enough to value the good old days. My opinion of spirals is in my current tagline, but this is not the appropriate thread. ;)

Since one of the girls today was described as performing a Kerrigan spiral, I simply posted to offer the visual of the original Kerrigan spiral. That is all. :)

You stated you loved good old fashioned spirals. Even from men. What do you think of my handle selfie? Is that a good "guy" spiral? This was like the 30th run with a photog and I was exhausted, but got this one after I was ready to just drop my shoulders and upper back and give up and my free leg dropped from near 180 to my comfort zone. I could also do Kerrigan easy spirals at 180
holding ad nauseam. What I am doing is MUCH harder, please don't even attempt to say otherwise!

Also i'm pretty sure you can do two 3t and two 2t, Maria Talalaikina did it last season, she had:

3ltz-3t
2a-3t-2t
3ltz-2t

Good point about test skates not being a full skate, but as for repeating 3T she can't do that because you can only repeat two triples and she's already repeating 3A and 3Lz. Maria Talalaikina would've repeated 3Lz and 3T so that would be fine.

This girl is still setting the tone and I hope inspiring future generations of skaters to come.

I think the rising popularity of figure skating amongst young girls is just because of Aleksandra (and Tina of course, never underestimate 'man's best friend' now matter how small). Alina and Masaru paved this path to popularity with children.

I can clearly imagine every little girl wanting to become just like Sasha, she has this spunky giggling and smiling, a little tomboyish nature that is endearing.

In one of the backstage series of fan photos you can see all these sweeper girls wanting to get their boots autographed by Sasha, is if to receive a blessing " please give me this power, please don't let me fall " etc.

Regarding Aleksandra's free skate, after watching it again only I realised she was kneeling with a dragon hatchling in her arms, setting it free and chasing it during it's flight in the first part of her program performing all these quads, rejoicing in her new found freedom and power. Later, she called the now grown dragon back to her and imposed her will on it, doing all the choreo elements and series, where she still occasionally looks up at the dragon, controlling it, sort of mimicking its capricious movements on the ice, until the final scene where she unleashes its power: 'Dracarys'.

An epic routine that will go down in history along with the record scores, also a routine that will have any audience in awe. Quite simple but very effective theme, another Gleikhengauz masterpiece.

Just image in a show with the costume, and against a projected background of movie scenes, how marvellous this routine must look?

On third watching, the crisp and precise sound of her first Quad takeoff and almost noiseless landing, right in front of the camera !

I still can't believe that of all amazing skaters we saw this weekend only three will go to Worlds.

I keep rewatching the 4A and Zhenya skate over and over again and I'm loving it more every single time. Also, the 4A really seem to be on a completely different level.

Guys, only I see this hilarious trolling from Daniil? :) "Drakaris!"

Yes, this FP is her dragon flame. "Drakaris!", and after a couple of minutes of sitting in a K&C - huge merciless score crushing all obstacles in the way of Sasha.

Daniil, you are funny guy

I feel so bad for Guliakova, Talalakina, and other seniors. So talented but will never get a chance on the big stage. They probably won’t even get Challenger events this season. Maybe, if they really want to, it’s time to switch countries?

I’ve said it before, the advance of the 3A will obsolete a whole generation of skaters and demand a whole new type of athleticism in skaters. Petite and curvy doesn’t cut it anymore, you need to be lean and mean.

Inevitably this means we get to see more ‘children’ amongst the top.
And perhaps a greater turnover once these ‘children’ grow and mature, finding out they cannot keep their shape without the required self discipline and training regime.
Please, please, please, Alyona, you are petite, don't grow curvy yet, stay strong, keep away from that chocolate, those snacks, ice cream, smoothies ;-)

In the novice ranks, like we saw in Ice Age, Kids and the Moscow Championship early September, many of those kids are advancing rapidly to catch up with the juniors.

In the juniors now competing in the JGP, it is only experience and resulting toughness and stability that’s still to be added, they are fairly complete skaters otherwise.

Next week a first glimpse of #TeamPanova’s Kseniya Sinitsyna hopefully, to prove it is not only #TeamTutberidzeForProgress that knows how to skate for medals :-)

But having hundreds of youngsters all over the world means 5, 10 or 20 of them may succeed in terms of self-discipline and regime. Statistically.
